Diet Coke With Splenda: Bewildering Choices?

Another Diet Coke has just been introduced - "Diet Coke sweetened with SPLENDA Brand Sweetener". There are now seven different flavors of Diet Coke. They are:

  • Diet Coke
  • Caffeine Free Diet Coke
  • Diet Coke with Lime
  • Diet Coke with Lemon
  • Diet Cherry Coke
  • Diet Vanilla Coke
  • Diet Coke with Splenda

The new Diet Coke with Splenda is actually sweetened with a combination of Splenda and acesulfame potassium (ace-k). Will this new flavor confuse things?

Imagine trying to order a particular Diet Coke... Will you need a degree in chemistry in order to select the appropriate formulation for your taste buds?

UPDATE April 06:Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda may be discontinued - see an up-to-date list of the various Coke formulas here.

I have tried and tried to quit my DC habit. I used to drink regular Coke but my metabolism slowed and switched to Diet. I am trying to limit myself to 2 cans a day, which doesn't seem to be "too much", however many THAT may be!! I don't drink coffee, or tea, so DC is my main source of caffeine, but what scares me is WHY is this so hard to keep in check - not drink too much? And WHY do i feel so yucky if I do have too many? I remember hearing that way back in the early days of Coke they actually put cocaine in it to keep people hooked. This may be a myth. But I wonder, is it really only the caffeine that's got me so hooked?
By the way I didn't like the Splenda version. Reminded me of Diet Rite. Which, by the way, someone earlier mentioned wanting a cola without aspartame OR caffeine, and that is Diet Rite. It is made with Splenda.

Carbonated beverages (soda, pop, etc) contain phosphorus, which depletes bones of their calcium. Two recent human studies have shown that girls (didn't test the guys, I guess) that drink more soda are more susceptible to broken bones than girls who drink less soda. I don't know what constitutes "more" or "less" but that alone may not be enough to get you thinking about drinking less pop. I agree with the person who suggested water. Your body needs at least 80 oz. of water per day. Drinking caffienated beverages drains your body's cells of that needed water as it's a diuretic. For every cup of coffee, tea or caffienated drink you have, you need two cups the same size of water to replace what you'll pull out with the caffiene. I'm not a purist. I enjoy a cup of tea, or coffee...but am staying away from carbonated drinks 'cuz I love my bones!

Well, I know a lady that has just been diagnosed with cancer and she ate a relatively healthy diet, but she drank Tab sodas like crazy. Don't tell me that the long term effects of these drinks aren't bad for you.

Overconsumption of any drink or food that is considered processed can cause health problems. However I've known people who didn't smoke, drink alcohol, use drugs, or overconsume beverages with artificial sweeteners who have gotten cancer. One person in particular who died from breast cancer was very overweight and didn't consume many fruits and vegetables nor did she excercise. The point is we can all do as much as we can to keep ourselves healthy by our eating fewer processed foods, more whole foods, and being active. Try Juice Plus, which is a whole food supplement to give us some insurance when we fall short on our daily nutrition.

Remember when the sun was bad for you? Todays research makes it seem beneficial. Aspartame and Splenda will probably go through cycles just like sunshine, today bad, tomorrow good. If we were not so obsessed with brand loyalty and image these products would probably cease to exist and we would drink the proper amount of plain water per day. Hum, I wonder if I eat a pound of dark chocolate before I drink the splenda products it might bind all the free radicals the beverage produces once inside my body? OOpps, there goes my HDL and immune system.....

A whole lot of stuff used to be bad and now isn't. Among this is chocolate, eggs, steak, nuts, even cheese. After seeing all the low fat crap not work, why would all this low carb and sugar free stuff be any better.

Is it true that diet soda and artificial sugar cause cancer? because if it is then i thought i was doing myself a favor drinking diet soda instead of regular. i mean i'm not addicted to diet soda i only have like 2-4 cans a week should i be worried or not?

I USE TO DRINK REGULAR DIET COKE, I RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT I WAS ALLERGIC TO THE ASPARTAME THAT WAS IN IT. I WAS GETTING BAD HEADACHS. I WAS THRILLED WHEN I FOUND OUT THAT COCOA COLA WAS MAKING DIET COKE WITH SPLENA. I REALLY ENJOY THE FLAVOR

what they're saying about splenda is the same thing they said about about aspartame.... i predict the same scenario.

anyone that has taken high school chemistry knows it DOES NOT MATTER that splenda starts as an average sugar molecule. once you tamper with it and transform it into a chemical that DOES NOT EXIST IN NATURE, it is a completely different substance and cannot be considered "safe." honestly, for everyone that actually falls for that whole marketing lingo, please go educate yourself.

remember, the only reason why splenda can have 0 calories is because it cannot be metabolized by the body.... although that's not always the case for everyone, and no one can guarantee that your body with it's unique metabolism won't absorb any calories from the substance.

consuming a chemical regularly that you cannot metabolize DANGEROUS no matter how you look at it. you might as well be eating Comet.

and, what is that person talking about ... "remember when sun was not healhty?" SUN CAUSES CANCER AND PREMATURE AGING YOU FUCKING IDIOT. all those people you see who are all tan and "healthy" looking now, are going to wrinkly, leathery, and maybe even dead in 10-20 years because of their vanity.

According to the Splenda International Patent A23L001-236 and PEP Review #90-1-4 (July 1991), sucralose is synthesized by this five-step process: 3

1. sucrose is tritylated with trityl chloride in the presence of dimethylformamide and 4-methylmorpholine and the tritylated sucrose is then acetylated with acetic anhydride,

2. the resulting TRISPA (6,1',6'-tri-O-trityl-penta-O-acetylsucrose) is chlorinated with hydrogen chloride in the presence of toluene,

3. the resulting 4-PAS (sucrose 2,3,4,3',4'-pentaacetate) is heated in the presence of methyl isobutyl ketone and acetic acid,

4. the resulting 6-PAS (sucrose 2,3,6,3',4'-pentaacetate) is chlorinated with thionyl chloride in the presence of toluene and benzyltriethylammoniumchloride, and

5. the resulting TOSPA (sucralose pentaacetate) is treated with methanol (wood alcohol, a poison) in the presence of sodium methoxide to produce sucralose.

It took awhile to get used to Diet Coke instead of Coke. Now I cannot find Diet Coke, only Splenda Coke and I HATE IT!!!!!! Why do they have to mess up everything good that they get going.

This is to Lynn of May 14th who wrote, "a fabulous book to read is "Natural Cures They Dont want You TO kNOW About". Lynn, the book is a pyramid-selling scheme! Obviously you didn't (can't?) read it. The man who wrote it wants to sell you books, viagra-type pills, herbal preparations even in bulk and will tell you what mark-up you can put on them to make a fortune. OR you can just get other people to sell them for you and everyone gets a share of the money.

Lynn, you ain't exactly Miss Credible.

Do your research on Splenda people. I've been having migraines for the past couple of years. Recently they got so bad that I had to go to the emergency room and have a CT scan. Well, I've never been a diet soda drinker because I've never liked the taste of it, and I'm in excellent shape so I didn't need to watch my calories. The only reason I've been having splenda in my diet is because it is an ingredient in a lot of protein bars, protein shakes and flavored waters. Each time I'd have a headache I'd think it was because of lack of caffeine when in reality it was because I was drinking and eating things with splenda in it. I'm now looking at labels in order to avoid the stuff.

Had been a big fan of vanilla DC and original DC as its back up for long time. Switched away when the local distributor stopped providing the vanilla DC. Was on the road, visiting down south and had my first encounter with DC with Splenda. Thoroughly disappointed with the three bottles that I tried. To me tasted like flat diet RC, something was definitely missing and it was not because of the use of splenda instead of aspartame. Three strikes and DC with splenda strikes out with me...

I drink diet drinks because they are a low calorie alterative to regular soft drinks. I like some caffine before I work out because, it helps you burn more calories. Splenda however, has not been -proven- to hurt anyone or anything so it is actually a great product. There is no Aspartame in Diet Coke with splenda, so it shouldnt hurt you. Heck, if we're going to freak out about some stupid artifical sweetner we should look at everything... who says eating a certain brand of pasta wont make you have excessive diarhhea when you are 70?

Pop, diet or not, is bad for you anyway, though diet has alot more advantages over regular.Splenda's derived from real sugar, but has no calories. It’s been tested in hundreds of scientific trials, and it’s been determined safe even for pregnant or nursing mothers. I've been drinking diet drinks for the last month or so, and I wasn't fat before, but I am much thinner now, with diet and excercise. If I would have drank regular soda not only would my friggin teeth rot out, I'd be 20 pounds heavier instead of 20 pounds lighter.

thats my 2 cents

since everyone is an expert on diet pop in here, I was just informed by a Doctor that there is a diet pop out there (he thinks it might be either diet coke or diet pepsi) that does put sugar in their diet pop and they just pay the penalty for false advertising every year. Thats just crazy!!! Now im trying to figure out what pop it is. Anybody know?

You'd get in all kinds of FTC trouble if you did that. I'm pretty sure that no company out there puts sugar in a "diet" pop because they'd be getting sued left and right by diabetics and people who can't have sugar. There is, however, Fresca soda that is diet in the States but is sugared in other countries. I don't know why the Coca-Cola company markets it that way, but they do. Maybe that's what the doctor was talking about?

Just to let everyone know that Splenda is made with a sugar extract so saying its not sugar at all is a misleading statement. It is more dangerous to microwave your food with plastic wrap than it is to ingest splenda. A little fact to add.

Ok. To the people who think splenda is an ok food additive. Wait I just said food additive, no matter what its made out of if its not natural it is not good for you. Even if Splenda is ok....Think about the rest of the chemicals in soda pop. Ever hear of Phosphuric Acid? Yea acid!..with a ph level of 2-3...Just to let you know battery acid is ph level 1. Soda is bad no matter what you put in it. Do yourself a favor and start eating and drinking what your body needs, not man made chemicals your body doesn't need.

I weened myself off of drinking too much soda by drinking carbonated water as I found it was the the fizz that I missed not the taste or the sugar/sweetness. Now I just drink either regular mineral water or carbonated mineral water and the very occasional can of Cherry Coke or Diet Coke with Lemon as a treat.

Of course some synthetic chemicals are bad for you, but so are some things in nature, such as deadly nightshade.

It's not so much the drinking of soda or eating of sweets/fats that's bad for you, it's the lack of real food and water during the day. Just try to eat lots of raw, natural, unrefined foods and drink lots of water, then the occasional can of pop be it diet or regular will probably do you no harm.

I am not being direspectful or anything like that because my mother taught me to be respectful but I think that pepsi is more appetizing than coke. I don't think that adding splenda to coke is an original idea because alot of other products that are out today are being added with splenda sugar.

I have been drinking diet coke with aspartame for years (since about 84'). I have had "brain fog" symptoms etc... not sure if they are DC related. I have found that supplementation with b-vitamins seems to help. B6 and calcium citrate has really helped me.

I have gained weight consistently since I switched to Diet Coke. I would quit and just drink water but If I go for a few days without it, I definitely go through a rather horrid withdrawal as the confusion/irritability symptoms get much much worse.

When I was down south 3-4 months ago I had several of the splenda dc's sold there and did not like the taste (too lemony)

Last week I noticed that the DC in my area (Northern VA near DC) with Aspartame seems to taste more like the splenda variety (i.e. fruit like aftertaste and less metallic). Could they have mislabeled these cans, or Is Coke experimenting with eliminating/supplanting Aspartame?

I think the regular soda may be better for me; as I never drank that many of the regular and definitely drank more water then..... I may go for a mix of water and regular coke to fight off the withdrawal type effects if they occur.

Any soda is bad for you as the phosphoric acid in the soda is basically battery acid, just not nearly as concentrated. I have heard you can use coca cola as a meat tenderizer and as a porcelain cleaner. I also read that the soda can inhibit the absorbtion of calcium.

Any MD's out there; feel free to comment - the stuff above is just stuff I have read.

Just thought I would relate my experiences.

The new Splenda-sweetened Coke is great. Diet coke actually TASTES like Coke again with splenda! Imagine that!
Regular diet coke has such a different flavor, they shouldn't even call that junk Coke at all!

When I finally swtiched to diet coke a few years ago, it was a real step back, a real compromise to drinking regular coke. Thanks to Coke for making this splenda Coke, cause it's just like the real thing.

I wholeheartedly disagree! Too many Coke products on the shelf with the exact same nutrition label! Diet Coke is the original and the best..........remember the slogan "Diet Coke....just for the taste of it" If you have switched from original coke, it now tastes like Coca Cola syrup, which moms used to give for an upset stomach. The addition of Splenda and Coke Zero are just marketing ploys and are doomed just like "New Coke"

I have news for all of you who think it is ok to drink and eat products made with Splenda. Splenda is made by combining chlorinated atoms with a sugar molecule. So in essence you are in fact injesting chlorinated sugar without that fresh chlorine taste.

All of you need to do your research before posting. None of you know the truth. Learn for yourself. There is a huge internet filled with information, and not all of it is true, but this piece of info is, so heed the warning.

Reply
Spectra

Uh-oh Mark...watch out for that deadly CHLORINE!! It's only half the component of ordinary table salt. If it's so dang bad to combine chlorine and sugar, any food that combines salt with sugar is somehow toxic? I can pretty much say that's not the case. Chlorine is just like any other chemical...it's dangerous when combined with certain other elements in other ways. Bound with sugar, it doesn't do anything...it passes through your system.

I agree that aspartame is bad for you! I used to get severe migraine headaches.. since I stopped drinking my 6-8 diet cokes a day,, I no longer get headaches!

I also have an Uncle who is suffering from ALS, more commonly know as Lou Gherig's disease. He is basically dying before our eyes! Anyhow the only thing he really has in common with other sufferers is that they all drank TONS of diet coke. Coincidence? I think not!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyhow I am not tried the dc with splenda and I guess I won't!

Oh wow, this is quite the coincidence. I am sitting here at my pc with a hot chocolate in which I dumped 3 table spoons of splenda. I thought, "hmmm maybe I should should see if this stuff is harmfull at all. I mean I've heard people say negative stuff about it here and there." Once I typed it in google, BAM sooo many bad things, I've been using splenda ever since it came out, and I use alot when I have coffee. Not only that I drink diet cokes quite often. I am a type one diabetic, very well controled, 18 and on a insulin pump. I hear It gives people headaches, cramps, diarrhea. I haven't got anything like that at all. They say lab rats became very unhealthy after taking sucralose (main ingredient) and it enlarged kidney's and livers. Which is soo scary since those are the most vital organs to watch out for when your a diabetic. My doctor, and dietishion both said its completely safe ever since diet coke came out. Im now worried, no my growth has not been stunted. But I mean diet coke and splenda has not been around for ever and my generation is growing up on this stuff. Who knows what will happen to people like me. Its pretty scary. Im worried now.... and I just finished my hot chocolate :D

Reply
Royce

oh!! and has anyone noticed that strange metalish aftertaste that splenda has which regular sugar doesn"t?

Reply
Morgan

Everything in moderation. Has anyone heard that term before? Human bodies are more complex than lab rats. We can tolerate quite a bit. To many people are skeptical about diet drinks, aspertame, ect ect. Added to that, people with these long stories about becoming unhealthy from products like these is complete bs. Either there taking overdoses or there unhealthy to begin with. Dont belive it! Nowadays everything seems unhealthy, Salt for example, Sugar, omfg!
