Diet Coke With Splenda: Bewildering Choices?
Another Diet Coke has just been introduced - "Diet Coke sweetened with SPLENDA Brand Sweetener". There are now seven different flavors of Diet Coke. They are:
- Diet Coke
- Caffeine Free Diet Coke
- Diet Coke with Lime
- Diet Coke with Lemon
- Diet Cherry Coke
- Diet Vanilla Coke
- Diet Coke with Splenda
The new Diet Coke with Splenda is actually sweetened with a combination of Splenda and acesulfame potassium (ace-k). Will this new flavor confuse things?
Imagine trying to order a particular Diet Coke... Will you need a degree in chemistry in order to select the appropriate formulation for your taste buds?
UPDATE April 06:Diet Coke Sweetened with Splenda may be discontinued - see an up-to-date list of the various Coke formulas here.

SPLENDA HAS BEEN LINKED TO CAUSE CANCER, AND THE CHEMICALS THEY PUT IN DIET SODA ARE POISIONUS...(sry, haha i cant spell) please b4 you totally trade in to diet soda or begin using SPLENDA or other sugar substitutes, put some time in to research it. its a food additive, and it's extremely bad for your health. a fabulous book to read is "Natural Cures They Dont want You TO kNOW About" it's a real eye-opener. what do u have to lose, seriously? another point to think about: since SPLENDA isn't real sugar at all, what do u think its actually made of? extremely bad chemicals that are detremental to your health. do yourself a favor and look into this.
ReplyYou do realize that the guy that writes these books "blah did blah, that they don't want you to know about" has been to jail for several times for the his books and products making fraudulent claims and fabricating evidence. He's a crook and I think he is actually forbidden by law at this point from selling ANYTHING. Nothing is ever a hundred percent safe, but the FDA works very hard to make sure that something is as safe as it can be before it reaches the market. The people working there are just regular people that have kids that drink Coke too after all.
Replyoh yeah, spelnda is a food additive. the food industry puts these into their foods to make you more hungry, so you eat more, and lable these "low fat, low calorie, fat free, lite, light..." ect. when you buy products labled like this, it makes you think it's a healthier choice because of the less calories or fat in the food. but these foods were added with chemicals to make it TASTE BETTER to make up for its lacking calories or fat. these food additives make you even more hungry, so you eat more than you realize. just another little fact i thought i'd point out :D
Reply1. Splenda is made from sugar
Reply2. You'd probably have to drink 100 cans of diet pop per day for it to be harmful.
Okay, I bought one of the little 12oz bottles and my first thought -> it tastes like TAB!
ReplyWeird but true.
Since findout I had diaetes, the biggest hurdle I had to give up was Regular Coke. While diet Coke is acceptable, I still missed the carmel taste of a real Coke. Yesterday, I picked up a couple of these at (W) and all I have to say is WOW! This is stuff tastes great with a slight "fruity" aftertaste. After the first couple of sips, I was in heaven.
ReplyThe new Coke doesn't have the same metallic aftertaste as the regular Diet Coke. It tastes a lot more like regular Coke - and I think I've found my new drink of choice.
ReplyI am training to be a dietician and have found that all the varieties of coke contain additivesthat harm health. although diet cola contains artificial sweetener that has been associated with carcinogens, the sugar in regular and other real sugar products has links to diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Obesity can increase risks of many cancers along with sugar's ability to degrade teeth. If soft drinks must be drunk, I'd personally always go for the diet version. Whats this new coke willis?
ReplyI am an avid DC drinker, I have tried on several occasions to cut back and even quit but with no success. Primarily because of what I have read about aspartame I tried the DC with Splenda yesterday and I have to agree with "diet pop drinker' It tastes just like the "original" TAB from back in the early days of diet sodas. Its a little to sweet for my taste so I guess I will continue to be a self loathing DC drinker.
ReplyI picked up a twelve pack of DC with splenda. Sure tastes like DC with Lemon to me. Not a bad product at all, although my personal jury is still out on whether I will buy the regular DC or keep buying this splenda stuff.
ReplyIt tastes like TAB... no doubt. Thought that well before I saw someone else said it above.
as for the poisonous stuff.. it is all bs. urban legend.. not one, not 100 will hurt you.
I'll stick to regular diet coke..
ReplyI was just saying to myself the other day, as I was drinking a Hansen's diet, how cool it'd be for DC to have Splenda. Then I saw the commercial today. I'll totally try it.
As for the poisonous aspects of aspartame/splenda/whatever. I think Coca-Cola is too powerful of a conglomerate for the truth to come out if it is ultimately bad for you.
Although, Hansen's was the first beverage I've had with Splenda in it and they seem too "Nuts and Berries" to get in bed with cheap chemicals.
I just feel better drinking Diet Coke vs. Regular.
ReplyAll these comments on Splenda being "bad" for you and big conglomerate companies trying to control your hunger is ridiculous! It sounds alot like the second gunman on the grassy knoll theory...totally mythical. As for Splenda it is in all actuality real sugar, the only difference being that through a process they take off three hydrogen oxygen groups from a sugar molecule and BAM out comes Splenda! When these groups are removed from the sugar your body doesn't recognize the molecule any longer as sugar or a carbohydrate so it pushes right through as though invisible. (sweet and undetectable.) So, there you have it the real story about Splenda from someone who has not lost their mind...yet.
ReplyActually, Splenda is not made with chemicals. It is made out of sugar. The the sugar molecules are safely altered thorugh a patented process. Just wanted to suggest that you do the research before you post a statement.
Reply"As for Splenda it is in all actuality real sugar, the only difference being that through a process they take off three hydrogen oxygen groups from a sugar molecule and BAM out comes Splenda! You didn't mention that the three hydroxides removed from the sugar molecule are replaced with three chlorine atoms when making Splenda (sucralose). The makers of Splenda admit that up to 15% of ingested sucralose might be absorbed by the digestive system into the bloodstream. It is well-known that chlorine interacts with water and organic/inorganic matter (such as those found in blood) to form by-products called trihalomethanes, which are known carcinogens linked to several types of cancer. Trihalomethanes may also cause reproductive damage and miscarriages in pregnant women. These were the same substances mentioned in the debates over the safety of drinking chlorinated tap water.
It should also be noted that of the "over 100 scientific trials proving the safety of Splenda" (quoted from the makers of Splenda), all but 6 were conducted on animals; of the 6 trials conducted on humans, all were short-term (some as short as 4 days). Please don't give false information to people trying to make the right choices. No matter what sweeteners are used to sweeten Coke or other sodas, these drinks will never be good for you.
ReplyAtificial sweeteners are a farce. The fillers that go into the packages are corn sugar. These are in the ingredient lists on the packages. I used to be a non lable reader. I urge every one to read ingredient lists and look up definitions. If these products are poison remains to be learned. If someone thinks they are avoiding sugar, they are being mislead. Thats bad too. The diet soda may be made with out the fillers, but they have enough chemicals in them that it's too much work to look them all up. Yuk
Replyits true for the ppl who say it taste like tap cause my friend drank some and she made a weird face and said it tasted like tap so some are not the only ones who think like that
ReplyMy boyfriend and bought some diet coke w/ Splenda two days ago and were instantly hooked...it tastes JUST LIKE REAL COKE!!! Hurrah! So great...so excited...yay. =)
ReplyI was so hopeful about the new Diet Coke with Splenda- i wanted to like it but alas- i think it tastes like Diet Pepsi with lemon. Bleh! I will stick to my regular Diet Coke, thank you.
ReplyI don't know - I kinda liked it! I found it refreashing. As for it being harmful, everything we do, eat, breath, etc is supposedly killing us. We'd go crazy if we freaked out over everything. Enjoy life - it's too short anyway. Drink your diet coke and chill!
Reply"Enjoy life - it's too short anyway. Drink your diet coke and chill!"
I doubt you'll be "chilling" with bladder cancer at age 60. The whole reason people avoid things that are bad for them is to grow older and not have to suffer like tortured animals because their bodies are falling apart. It's hard to enjoy life when you've got a terminal illness due to years of neglected health. Life isn't too short to stay away from things that will make you miserable in the future.
ReplyThanks for the sermon BEN! How about you just concentrate on your own life and let the rest of the adults do what they want.
ReplyAs for all these people who are "preaching" of not neglegting your health, I'm sure you are all working out properly and eating healthy as well. But...for my money I bet you're not. It's been my experience that the same people that have crazy theories of toxic poisons in their diet coke are the same ones that never get off the couch, and therefore are in the process of killing themselves anyway. Before you start to worry about cutting out the "possible" harmful effects of something that can only at best be speculated why dont you start with the basics, and let everyone else enjoy their diet drinks! Best of luck working out!
ReplyI was addicted to Coke Classic and have been waiting for Diet Cherry Coke with Splenda. Being in love with the Cherry coke I can't wait to run to the store to get the one flavored with Splenda. Thank you I needed this being a diabetic. Now I can come back to a real refreshing drink. I LOVE Classic Coke.
ReplyI too am a DC addict. I like the Splenda version OK, I just wish I could cut back... :-)
ReplyI drink 6-8 cans a day.
Alrite Ben, First off my dad's a doctor and he states that of all the 'chemicals' and drugs EVER produced, nothing has been more extensively researched than Aspartame. Although you may rebute by saying, "I was talking about Splenda", it is the same bullshit. Secondly, it HAS been tested by the Canadian Health Organization, the UN, the European Health Organzation, and the USA Health Department (may not be exact wording of centres...). If you don't believe me, google it and see for yourself. And all these sites stating anything bad about sweetners, are unfounded and are usually are not credited with ANY association to any major health organzation. Lastly, Splenda would NEVER jeopardize their market share by making 'outrageous' statements such as 100 studies conclude....That would be false and be subject to tons of lawsuits, not to mention Twin Sugar whom have been struggling to maintain their market share within the last 5 years.

ReplyHeres the link, and don't give me this horseshit about their lying or decieving you. The same principle in the last paragraph applies to this. THEY CAN NOT LIE, as it is too difficult. If you want to take it as a conspiracy, so be it, but I can assure you that they are PLENTY more drugs/chemicals that these companies can publicize that would even make more money.
I don't understand how people can complatey doubt the fact that these products are bad for you? When so many people talk about how they are? I NEVER drink any coke products because i don't want rotted yellow teeth. As for the person who said yay! new diet coke im so excited... GETTA LIFE LOVE.
ReplyYou people are all losers. I ended up on this site by mistake while searching for other soft drinks made with Splenda. It is a freaking beverage people, either drink it or don't. It amazes me what people will waste their time doing. Don't you people have jobs or families to tend to. Here is a suggestion, get out from behind the computer and go outside, a little exersize and good oral hygene and maybe you all could be drinking regular coke without a worry about the side effects.
ReplyWhen will you have a caffeine-free diet coke with SPLENDA? This will be a healthier choice for those of us who do not want ASPARTME or CAFFEINE. I think after talking to all my friends and family this would be a big seller for you.
ReplyI was diagnosed with type II diabetes two years ago. I loved COKE. I had to cut it out. Diet Drinks with Aspartame would give me headaches. While I was in the hospital for knee surgery (where they also diagnosed the diabetes) they gave me a splenda with my meals instead of sugar. I then discovered that Diet Rite is made with Splenda instead of Aspartame. I have been drinking it for two years now. All my doctors and other health care professionals I have dealt with in the past two years always mention splenda as a good choice.
I have looked forward to coke coming out with Splenda. I tried it and I LOVE it.
And I am not listing to all you "doom sayers" about Splenda. I have read enough medical evidence to say I don't believe a word you say.
ReplyMy husband is very addicted to DC. I am trying to research information because it may be why he is so unhealthy. I figure someone on here could give me some good advice. He is 27, 6 ft, 300 lbs. He drinks well over 6 20 oz. per day. I am not sure how many he drinks at work. He doesn't drink anything else, I try to get him to drink water or even kool-aid. The only time he drinks milk is when he has heartburn. He says when he goes to the doctor that everything is fine. And I've seen him check his blood sugar and it's great. But my concern is, he's always tired, he's asthmatic, he has heart palpitations, he has osteaoarthritis, and he feels like he has the symptoms of rhuematoid arthritis in his hands. He always aches and he sleeps, when he's not working, almost 12 hours or more. He complains when he gets home, that if he takes off one tire from a car, he works at a brake shop, that his hands will feel horrible with a throbbing pain that stays all day. His asthma is getting worse and he always says that at least he's drinking DC that's better. His dad was diagnosed with diabetes due to drinking Dr. Pepper and now he drinks everything diet, so now my husband thinks that's ok and does not affect his health. I don't see anything else that could be the problem. And when they talk about increased apetite, well my husband eats like there's no tomorrow. He's always hungry and he says that he craves fatty proteins like peanut butter which he also eats like crazy. Could there be a connection?? Please help!!
ReplyHere is a lil advice.... DRINK WATER. And if you want taste; WATER WITH A SPLASH OF LEMON/LIME. And stop letting this million dollar corporations fool you into buying this garbage. None of it is good for you. They don't care if it is good for you or not as long as they make a buck. You think they let their kids take in half of the garbage they market to us. Water is the ultimate diet soft drink and its free. Think about it. I bet your body would sure love you for it.
ReplyAs for whether or not splenda is dangerous, there's a whole class of organic chemicals that derive their amazing properties from having chlorine substituents: pesticides. As for people's doctors endorsing splenda, how much do they really know about the compound, or chemistry in general?
ReplyI Have been sick for several months. I have had several tests mri, cat scans, heart tests, and at 40 years old this is ridiculous. The Dr's had pretty much came to the conclusion that I had MS or something. Then I read this email about diet soda and the aspertame. I drank Diet pepsi regularly. I talked to my doctor and she had just came from a seminar about the effects of aspertame. She and I agreed to give it up to see if this would help. Though I miss the taste of my oh so good diet Pepsi I have never felt better in my life. My headaches have gone from daily to maybe monthly and my joints aren't hurting like they were. I don't know... But the proof is in the can...I am glad to say I am no longer a diet or regular soda drinker. It has been as hard as giving up cigarettes. Which I have never smoked. But for the first time in months. I actually wake up pain free,,,,
ReplyWhat happens in the body when salt (NaCl) is broken down? Are there harmful Clorine chemicals? A/nd should we be afraid of salt too? I like salt with my sandwiches and I'm not sure I would like sandwiches without salt. Otherwise, I might like to have salt subsitute, and if so which is bad?
ReplyMy mother loves the taste of Diet Coke with Splenda but everytime she takes it she drinks one she gets extremely sick. ie. throat starts closing some, headaches, and some othe things. I will not try it because of that. anyone else had the same issues?
Reply
Replydiet soda does not promote weight loss, so what's it for.
While it was entertaining listening to you all fight, notice how when you are posting a message it says: "Please be respectful." I'm sure you are all way smarter than me but I know how to be civil with people who disagree with me. Best of luck to everyone on fulfilling your dreams.
ReplyTO BASHERS OF quote 'people who waste their time' go f*** urself and mind your own shit. If 5 minutes of my time saves an hour of someone elses whether it spend eating or research on splenda, so be it. No one really cares that you hate this site, even though ur visting it AND making a message. And yes, I'm a very physically built person who DOES spend 3hr a day on the computer. Its called 'being apart of life' and staying connected.
People.....
saying that you had headaches every day becuase you drink coke, doesnt mean it was a factor. Headaches are the most commonley reported condition to 911 with ANYTHING. Go to your local hospital ask information office, I'm sure they'll agree. Your argument is as valid as saying, "Waking up in the morning attributes to 100% in all fatal accidents".
I will argue with one thing though. Drinking anything carbonated may increase your risk of a headache, sugar or not. I'll admit I have headaches after I drink coke or diet coke/ or lime drinks. Then again I chough it down (4 min tops). Thats probably where the cause lies.
Mouseman, you answered your own question. Google some chemistry basics or talk to a resident or hospital doctor. They could probably explain what happens when you break down Salt and which enzymes are used. Salt is composed of 2 seperate chemicals which are both deadly if seperated (chlorine gas). Thats not to say SALT is bad. Salt is harmless when those chemicals have bonded. Salt will not kill you.
ReplyThe new Splenda DC tastes awful compared to the to the regular DC. It tastes like Diet Pepsi. Yuk.
ReplyNo doubt the reg old school DC is best. I kind of like the metallic taste. I'll stick to the old school. Things are getting too fancy.
