The Lure of the Doughnut
The New York Times has an interesting piece on that food staple - the doughnut. Most nutritionists agree that the doughnut has virtually no nutritional value - but that doesn't stop people eating them. Why?
"Foods containing both sugar and fat are the most palatable and have an appealing mouth feel," said Dr. Kathleen Keller, an appetite researcher at the Obesity Research Center, adding that companies "conduct extensive research to determine the exact sugar/fat proportions that are the most enticing."
They taste good, that's why. The article also points to a drug-like effect:
And high-carbohydrate foods like doughnuts, brain scan studies find, raise the levels of two brain chemicals, serotonin, linked to mood, and dopamine, associated with pleasurable, rewarding sensations, in obese and normal-weight people.

To Caroline, Here is the information that I found and am using on this Reverse Diet: DON'T EAT: Salt, sugar, alcohol, caffeine or carbonated beverages, ie; sodas.
ReplyDO EAT: All veggies, fresh and frozen, including potatoes. Extra virgin olive oil, the darker the better. All seafood, chicken and turkey. All berries, peaches, pineapple, apples, grapes and plums. Eggs. Lemons. White cheese. Fat free sour cream, salad dressing and skim milk. Low salt margarine. GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC. All spices excluding salt. Post Shredded Wheat and Bran cereal. Uncooked Old Fashioned Oat Meal- (she puts a half cup of oatmeal and a half cup of the shredded wheat or bran in 6 oz. of orange juice. I have had this twice and I think it tastes better after it sits for about 5 or 10 minutes because the oats are uncooked. It makes the oats softer because they soak up the orange juice.) Red Meat and Pasta in moderation and small portions. TIPS: Eat a BIG BREAKFAST-consisting of last nights dinner or veggies with an egg or two broken on top and then scrambled or made into an omlet, with your choice of fish, chicken or turkey. (Use water, orange juice, margarine or olive oil when cooking meat.) Eat Medium lunch and small dinner. Drink 2 glasses of hot lemon water per day. Drink when thirsty, eat when hungry. This is all I could find on this diet. I have tried it for 2 days now and this is the third day. So far I have lost 4 lbs. I have cheated a bit last night because I have to cook dinner for my husband and grandson. I made a baked chicken with sauteed potatoes in real butter, home made noodles or pasta as some call them with the broth from the chicken and a home made cole slaw. Well let me tell you I had to try just a little of everything. I ate only what I could hold in the palm of my hand and this morning when I got on the scales I figured I would have not lost but gained but low and behold the scales were down by another 2 lbs. I'm 52 years old and I started at 208 and was at 204 this morning. My problem is that I have to go to the grocery store to stock up on some fish and a few other items. I've been full of energy since I started this diet and feeling better each day. Some of my swelling has gone down all over my body. Gonna keep trying and I hope this info helps you.
Caroline, About your comment about tofu. I don't and won't use it or any other soy products because I've recently read several comments stating that soy products may be causing hormonal problems in some people. I have enough problems with my hormones without going that route.
ReplyAlso as far as I understand, counting calories has nothing to do with this diet. Probably because of the choices of food that's allowed on this diet.
I have a question though, has anyone seen where bread of any kind is allowed on this diet? I've looked but so far have seen nothing where it says bread is allowed.
