The Backwards Diet

Tricia Cunningham went from a weight of 292 pounds down to 125 pounds, using what she calls "The Backwards Diet". So what is the Backwards Diet? Eat what you would normally have for dinner at breakfast.

Cunningham cooks salmon, cod, or any protein she wants in a marinade of orange juice every morning.

She also likes to dump any vegetable she has into a saucepan and crack two eggs over them, making a veggie soufflé.

For dinner -- you guessed it -- she eats breakfast. Usually she eats oatmeal with shredded wheat in orange juice, not milk.

Of course it could just be that Ms Cunningham was eating a little better; oatmeal, oily fish, vegetables, and shredded wheat are all great food choices. The article also points out that Cunningham was eating 5 cloves of garlic per day. Not quite sure what effect this has on the bodies metabolism, but would be a good immune booster none-the-less.

UPDATE: Weight corrected to 125 pounds.

Perhaps you need to re-read the homepage, http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/REVERSEFADDIETS/

For we do not bash any diet of choice that a person chooses.
We harber no anger to Trisha to disban our group, we reformed.
What made us angry is when she tried to act as an imposter, many times,
Want proof.........here you go...........

This a copy and paste format, no editing, so the grammar errors will remain.

My name is Angela and a friend of mine suggested that I come to this
group, he's a lawyer and a very good friend of Ms. Cunningham's. I have
to say I am a little taken back by some of the comments, almost scared.
I think this woman is amazing to come forward with her story. I live in
Pittsburgh, Pa. she has been on the news several times around here. She
really has done alot of great things for people in the area. I have
been on her plan that I got from her for three weeks now and have lost
12 pounds. I never used to eat breakfast, only one meal a day. I
babysit my grandkids and I was always on the go. Any help with getting
over chocolate cravings?

1. I only stated that you have to be committed and nothing in life is
easy, you have to work for it, be committed, and want the best for
your self, as TC said, "Nobody wakes up in the morning, looks in the
mirror, and says, I want to gain 150 pounds and I am going to start
today."
Angela

2. I have been in this site from the begining and I have lost wieght, I
along with so many others, have lost weight, I followed the plan and I
am quit happy with the results

3. Now you are messing with my mind. I was here under anothe rID and I
read her post, saw her posts and plese do not insult my intelligence.
Tricia Cunningham was here

4. My husband snd I both called her tonight and she is very receptive
and professional. I have been reading these post and I think, as a
mother and grandmother

5. It is here in Pittsburgh, Pa. are you near us? i would love to go
with someone else for support. Tricia Cunningham's friend has lost
alot of weight and loves the support she gives. Where is she?????????
(This was the post Elaine responded to, you deceived her as well)

Angela

6. Hello Al, I am new here too, my name is Angela. I have been onthe
plan and losing alot. Were you doing it correctly. My husband lost 25
pounds in one month. We are from pittsburgh. Tricia has a support
group locally if you need extra help

7. I am so glad Tricia's diet isn't a fad. Pitsburgh's been doing this
for years. We have a great community here and she has two groups that
she talks too weekly. I just found out when her next meeting is and I
ca not wait to meet her. I am really loving all the food and the
weight loss.

Angela

8. I emailed and was told that if I could not do it with the water to heat
up the whole lemon for 16 seconds and it would activate the diuretic
effect.

9. Wow, I thought I was the only one who had alot of weight to lose. I
have been on the diet and lost weight but I don't use salt. I never saw
anything where it was allowed. I thought it was not ok.

Angela

10. Those items are not on the diet that I have. My uncle is a doctor

11. actually, Angela is my aunt, she was posting (Please refer to the very top, her introduction, yet another attempt of deceit)

I would go on, if this does not wise you up, you have my sympathies, I only hope you do not hurt anyone with more deceit.

I have been on a weight loss program for about 3 months now. I have lost around 30 pounds. I know its kinda slow and that alright. I am now at a stand still. I read about your diet and it interested me. I'm not much on breakfast anyway so I thought that it might just be the thing for me. The only thing is I don't much care for tofu. How do you implement that into the diet plan when you really don't care for the taste?(esp. in the morn) I would really love to hear from you and see how to make this work for me. I am so ready to get this weight off. I am ready to get back my old figure and be healthier. Thank you for any help.

Dear Tricia,
I read about your diet in First Mag. I am interested in trying this out. I have been tired & listless W/ feelings of depression & don't have energy. I usually love to workout & eat right but I can't seem to stick with it. I have gained about 30 # I had even thought about doing a diet like this before I ever read you info & sometims I eat cereal for dinner & have a feeling of being lighter in the morning I can see where you diet would work.
My problem is my work schedule. M W F up @ 2 am to be @ work for 430am T T S up @ 5am @ work 730 am. I have thoght about getting up @ 2 am all days of the week & use the time to exercise. I skip breakfast because I get up so early on MWF. Well i just thouhgt I would ask your advise. Let me get this stright oatmeal is raw you don't cook it at all?
Well wish me luck I am going shopping today to get some food to start this diet. Perhaps I could eat my big meal after I exercise in the morning & @ breakfast time @ work eat a snack then lunch then afternoon snack then the light dinner.
Thank you for a new way to jump start my plan for a healthy beautiful body & mind
Sincerely
Robbie

I was on the Reverse Diet for over 4 weeks. The first two weeks, I had the most awful passing of gas, bad breath from the onions and garlic. The cereal and OJ was a completely disgusting to eat and I won't mention what it looked like.

My membership was at a group starting from GMA. At the time Trisha Cunningham was a part of the group up until people starting having problems with the diet.

In the 40+ days I was on the diet I lost all of 5 pounds. My wife lost all of 2 pounds and after 10 days she became severly ill, and faint from the diet. We both followed the diet. Others from the group I belonged to had the same responses with the gas, bad breath, overall tired run down feelings.

I would not recommend this plan to anyone. It is very difficult to remain on a diet where your family is eating a large meal in the mornings. Our mornings before work is quite a frenzy and for everyone to sit and eat a large meal is next to impossible. The results we had was not enough to warrant staying on this diet.

As for the magazine articles anyone can say anything. I highly doubt there authenticity of success soley on this plan. Everything wrote about in the above posts regarding the diet being what it is are true statements, many of these people I reconize from the GMA group. There was a lot of people who had the same results my wife and I did.

I actually think this is a good idea, eating more calories at the first meal in the morning. If you have to eat exactly what she ate like Ron was saying, then it doesn't sound like it will work the same for everyone.

I have applied the basic diet philosophy for the past 3 days and have lost 4 lbs. What I love is the fact I can start the day "cheating." There is no deprivation leading to temptation.

Hi. My name is Sara Marie and I'm nineteen. I've tried for many years to take off the pounds that medication for ovarian problems has brought on me. I've tried everything, and like most, lost weight, was satisfied, but then gained it right back immediately. So far, I've been on this diet for 4 days, and have lost 7 pounds. It may be just a start and things might not work out in the end, but at least it's something to hope for.

Those who come on here to knock this plan, shouldn't. Just because you're upset that something didn't work out well for you, doesn't mean you should try to make other people upset with you. Let them try it themselves, and if they don't like it, they'll stop. In the meantime, I think that we're all old enough to take care of ourselves, so if you have advice or word from an actual doctor disproving this method, of which I would hope they had already gone national with their word, then I say back off and let people decide for themselves.
Some only have the littlest bit of hope to get them thru the day.
Might as well be something that makes them happy and fulfilled.

I work constantly and actually cook maybe twice a week, if that. (This includes microwaving anything.) I eat fast food two, sometimes three times a day.

Until two days ago, I ate a regular sized breakfast, a regular sized lunch (sometimes oversized) and a regular (sometimes supersized) supper. Then if I might eat late at night too because I like to go to bed full (it's a comfort thing). As you can see, I don't make excuses for being obese or blame anyone/anything other than me. Did I mention that I don't exercise and that I've had hypoglycemia since I was 14?

I read about this diet in First Magazine. I have begun to try a variation of it.

I am eating a supersized breakfast packed with protein. The last two days, I have noticed that my bloodsugar feels more balanced than ever. I have also noticed that I don't get hungry for lunch until later than usual. When I do get hungry for lunch, I don't feel the need to overeat. As a matter of fact, I only seem to want enough to make the hunger go away. (That is a first for me. I love food and used to eat just because something tasted good, even when I wasn't hungry.) Another odd thing - I'm not having horrible cravings the way that I used to.

I certainly don't feel weak. But I'm not following the diet exactly by any means. Let me tell you something else. I'm not going to pretend that I'm eating that tofu crap. I'm a meat, cheese and bread kinda girl. I'm going to eat normal food.

For those of you thinking of responding with ridicule, don't waste your time. I just wanted to tell you all what I am going to try to do. Whether or not it works, I will try to remember to update you all in a few months.

Well, I was at work just a few hours ago and saw Tricia's story in First Magazine. I've never heard of this plan before. But, I do remember Hearing the old saying "Eat Breakfast like a King, Lunch like a Prince, and Dinner like a Pauper" before. This diet makes sense to me. I've been on Atkins for about 4 weeks. I've lost 16 pounds. I've hated it. I know it isn't good for me. I've tried to help lessen the bad effects by going on a fruit/juice fast every 7th day. It's worked, but at what expense? I know that it hasn't been good for me and I will probably gain some back as soon as I get off of it in two more days. So, what now? Where do I go from here? It seems like Tricia's plan has come into my life at the best possible time. I'm ready to try it. I don't plan on implementing her exact menu, But I certainly plan on reversing my order. I already know how to eat healthy. My problem has always been that I just eat too much and at the wrong time. . . So Tricia, thank you so much for your story. You may have saved me from an eternity of yo-yo dieting. Your plan makes sense, sometimes it just takes being hit over the head, (or seeing it at the check out line in the store that you work in) to get sense across! Thank you!

I am very excited about trying this diet.I have been trying very hard to come up with a way to loose weight but it has been impossible for me to do that with my job. I am a surgical tech in an operating room and my current weight is around 335lbs. I often times go into a case that will last for 4 to 5 hours because my level of expertise lies in big, long surgeries.(the other day I got my lunch break at 2:00pm and I work until 3:00) I sometimes go until 1:00pm without so much as a morsel of food. By the time I get home I start eating and don't stop until late at night!! I wasn't eating breakfast because if I had cereal I would have such a bad hypoglycemic reaction an hour later I would feel as though I was going to pass out during the surgery! I am going to start this diet today and see how I feel this weekend. I will keep you posted. wish me luck..

Last night I read about the reverse diet in First magazine. It sounded so good; just reverse your meals, drink hot lemon water with meals, eat oatmeal and tofu. But after reading through a couple of message boards, I see it's not so simple. Apparently, Tricia avoids specific foods (no milk or yellow cheese, no tea, probably no salt, etc.), and eats others such as the fish or chicken (no red meat?), garlic (parsley helps with the smell - you can buy parsley capsules), and OJ. My personal feeling is that our bodies are very individual in what will work and what won't, and sometimes our lifestyles and current health dictate what we can and can't do. Nutritionists always stress breakfast. However, I found that whenever I ate a large breakfast, it merely increased the total amount of food I ate, and I would either stop losing or would gain weight. However, I do think there is merit in the idea. A slim friend of mine told me over 10 years ago that she never ate after 6:00 p.m., and she believed that was why she never had a weight problem no matter what she ate. Anyway, good luck to all. It's nice to know there is a place to discuss these ideas.

I too read Tricia's article in First magazine on the Reverse Diet. I think I will try her idea, but will kind of follow Wendy's idea (October 22). I don't like Tofu, and I can't imagine putting O.J. on my cereal. I will prepare food the night before for a "supper" breakfast. I'll most likely have a shrimp salad for lunch, with light dressing, and have cereal and skim milk for supper. I'll let you know in a couple weeks, if it worked. Good luck to all.

I started the Reverse Diet last night after reading the article in First magazine. I will let you in a couple of weeks if it works. However, I am not eating tofu or oj on my cereal. Last night I had oatmeal for dinner. This morning I was starving and had my "supper" breakfast. I sipped on hot lemon water and so far I feel good.

I started my most recent "change of lifestyle" about 3 months ago. I told myself that I would eat food that my body could make use of. I replaced chips and chocolate bars with roasted nuts and enery bars. No more white or whole wheat breads, now it's rye or multi-grain. I would have 3/4 of a bottle of water with 1/4 lemon juice on the way to work in the morning, a ReBar at work, Granola & Keifer and toast with hummus for lunch and around 8 at night I would have a bowl of shredded wheat or other whole grain cereal. A cup of green tea before bed with a multi vitamin. I have lost 20 lbs in 3 months. Not spectactular, but not bad for just changing what I am eating. So last night at the check out, I picked up the First Magazine. I read the article and thought that is basically what Im doing, and maybe if I step it up a notch and pay more attention to the time that I'm eating I might really start losing. A good substitute for tofu is Soy Milk, and I think I'll stick to the keifer on my granola instead of orange juice on shredded wheat. All in all, I think this might work for me. I look forword to hearing some success stories in the near future.

I started this a couple of days ago and have lost 2lbs. 8 oz. I have not stuck religously to the eating plan but pretty close. At this point I am impressed and I need to lose about 50lbs.

I started the "reverse diet" yesterday after reading it in FIRST magazine. I feel *better* today, not as tired as usual but I must say I was a bit disappointed yesterday - by the time I got home last night I was STARVING for dinner and ate a normal dinner (I guess a big no-no on this plan!). I also didn't bring a snack with me for the afternoon and would not cave to the evil vending maching. I am going to stick with it though and see how it goes (I throughly enjoyed my breakfast and brought a healthy snack with me today). I need to lose 50 pounds. Yes very depressing. I saw a photo of Kirstie Alley at her heaviest and thought "Oh my GOD she is huge!" then I pretty much cried all night knowing I must look just like that. I guess I've never been THIN and never will be (just not built that way) but never really watched my weight or what I ate until my 30's - and now after having delivered 3 10 pound babies (yes they were all 10 pounds) I am finding myself obsessed with how heavy, depressed and unhealthy I am. I would love to be at a normal weight around 150-160 for me (I am 5'8) I am finding that nothing works for me to get the weight off and keep it off. consistantly anyway. I read "the carbohydrate addict's guide" and tried that plan but it made me crazy with not being able to eat fruit plus "skipping meals" isn't something I could see myself doing (like the book suggests) for the rest of my life. south beach forget it. one week into it and I'm eating oreos for dinner. never tried atkins because I know that is not something I could commit to. can't do jenny craig food delivery is not for me. weight watchers don't have time for. I am a busy mom of 3 active kids also working F/T outside the home. diet pills don't work either. they are unhealthy and addicting and to date I have not lost one pound on any of them and I have tried them all. I was so hopeful with the "reverse diet". I think eating healthier overall will help in general. I get so depressed I just want to eat everything in site. That must sound familiar to you all. Guess I just needed to vent a bit. Hope you all have much success at whatever you try.

My present weight loss efforts are great so much that I could have ever expected on Reverse Diet. I am following a lot of advice from the Biggest Loser routine online and Book. I would really enjoy having either Bob or Jillian on my side like the TV reality people. The Biggest Loser is so much better for me and my lifestyle. Those two are real life coaches and have the knowledge, training to back them up.

I do not have any Bad breath, intestinal gas or body odor on the Biggest Loser way of eating!!! On Reverse Diet plan I would brush my teeth, gargle and still would have sink coming off my body from the reverse diet!

For those of you who haven't watched, or tried the Biggest Loser way of eating this is a Healthy Eating plan, sensible and you can lose weight and not Stink with Bad Breath, Gas and enjoy yourself with the plan!

Kat, your post sounds just like myself. I'm also a busy mom, 5'8", needing to lose 50 lbs. I gained most of my weight with 2 big babies and a very sedentary job that exhausts me. I saw the article about the Reverse diet in First magazine and started it 2 days ago. I'm not following it exactly, just reversing my meals I normally eat. I have noticed I'm not as tired in the evening and I do like going to bed not feeling stuffed. Anyway, just wanted to let you know that you are not alone and I hope we both can suceed with this.

The more I think about this, the more I realize it isn't more me...just too difficult to eat different than my family and drastically change my eating that from the way that I have eaten for the past 40+ years. I know that I will end up losing some, then back on the yo-yo plan again. I've decided instead to eat right (duh!) eat less at night, drink lemon water during the day, and never consume calories after 6 p.m. I wish you all good luck on your diets!

I am real interested in trying this plan. I read about it in First Magazine. I really have a question, not a comment:

I work third shift 10PM to 6AM, Mon.-Fri. and want to know how I can adapt this plan to my schedule. I usually try and sleep a few hours when my children are at school, but am up from 2-2:30 every afternoon, until the next morning.

This diet makes sense because you need more energy during they day so why not have a big meal to start your day and a small one to end it

Hello all,

I have been on the diet for one week and have lost 8lbs. I can hardly believe it.

I am fourty and have 100lbs to lose. I am finding this diet very easy. I haven't had this much weight loss success in a one weeks period since I was in my twenties.

I will continue to keep everyone posted on my progress.

Wishing all health and happiness,
