Obesity Stats: Completely Overrated... and False

So much for the "killer obesity epidemic" that's been shouted from the rooftops. Apparently it's NOT ranked number 2 in the nation's leading preventable causes of death.

It's number 7.

The new analysis found that obesity — being extremely overweight — is indisputably lethal. But like several recent smaller studies, it found that people who are modestly overweight actually have a lower risk of death than those of normal weight.

First the CDC said obesity caused 400,000 deaths per year. Then they admitted their mistake and revised that to 365,000. In recent studies the figure 25,814 has now been released.

CDC Director Dr. Julie Gerberding said because of the uncertainty in calculating the health effects of being overweight, the CDC is not going to use the brand-new figure of 25,814 in its public awareness campaigns and is not going to scale back its fight against obesity.

I wonder how all the scaremongering has impacted in incidences of eating disorders, low self-esteem, and general despair. With these new figures you've got more chance of being shot than dying from obesity.

The truth is out there... somewhere.

Why can't these scientists all come together, and agree on one concensus?: rather than one day say being overweight will kill you, and then another day saying that it is actually healthy?

You have to give a bit more understanding to the people who come up with these figures. It's very hard to determine if obesity is the cause of death in many instances. For example, if somebody dies of stomach cancer, was it being overweight that caused it or could it have happened anyway? That's a very hard question to answer, so there is no way to come up with perfect figures. Regardless, obesity is still an undisputably unhealthy epidemic.

Ben, you're absolutely right. I should really have called this "Obesity Mortality stats..."

There is no doubt that high body fat levels are linked with a significant number of health issues. Attempting to pindown weight (or BMI) as the sole cause of these ailments is what is difficult.

People die of what they were destined to die of, being fat will not necessarily kill you, for example, walk out into the street without looking and perhaps the oncoming traffic will kill you.

Yeah, keep obsessing over weight, while doctors and diet centers get rich off of telling you your too fat. If we're too fat, then offer a FREE soulution.....that's what I thought.

p.s. go feed the hungry to take your mind off of your weight.

I am a sociologist and I can assure you fat is the most overhyped health risk there is. Plenty of fat people in other societies were very healthy and lived to ripe old ages without developing premature disease. They did not suffer from stigma! Furthermore, few people are aware all the risky weight loss practices from diet drugs to WLS gets attributed to obesity. Why? Pharma is the one sponsoring the studies. They want to scare more people into using the deadly pills which cause more harm which is blamed on fat to sell more pills!!! Enjoy your life!!!

I wish that were the case here, but unfortunately, the reasons people here are obese are most likely different than those "other societies," and those are the causes of our increased morbidity and mortality, in my opinion.
