Exercise: How Much Is Enough?
The Medical College of Georgia has undertaken a study of teenagers aged 14 to 18 to determine how exercise affects their body fat levels.
The results appear to go against some of the contemporary guidance on exercise intensity:
The study... found that the fittest students were those who got high amounts of moderate and vigorous physical activity. But the leanest students (lowest body fat percentage) were only those who participated in vigorous activity, the study found.
The conclusions appear to tie "vigorous" (rather than moderate) exercise to body fat levels. The intensity of exercise was measured with an accelerometer. I was unable to find how these categories compared with heart rate. The only clue is that the researchers called walking a "moderate" exercise.
To be honest taking measures of exercise is a small variable in determining causes of lean mass. Perhaps those who were more active ate "cleaner" diets. Who knows what other genetic factors were at play.
Traditionally, the "fat-burning" zone is a moderate heart rate (brisk walk, slow jog).

Replyhi i'm sara and i feel all u peoples pain i'm 5'2 and 130 i feel so overwait because all my friends are really skinny and can eat anything so i feel all the pain
ReplyHi
I understand how some of the heavier girls feel. I'm 29 and have ALWAYS struggled with my weight. Ever since I can remember. Yo-yoing from 210 at times down to about 150 and then always ending back where I am today at my stead 180-190 pounds. I'm 5'8", very skinny legs, large breasts (38DDD), and chubby upper body and face.
I found out a few months ago that PART of my weight problem was that I'd been living with two canteloupe-sized fibroids. So, in July of this year I had a hysterectomy, had the fibroid tumors removed, and to top all paid an extra $8,000.00 to have a tummy tuck done. A flat stomach alas I thought!!! It was so nice (for about 2 weeks). And then my appetite came back FULL FORCE!!! :o Even with the tumors gone the doctors said my appetite would decrease. NOT!! Now I think about eating all the time. Since the surgery I've already gained about 10 pounds. My stomach's still flat but I can tell my sides and flanks are starting to pooch again and when I sit my stomach is starting to do that tire around the waist thing that it did before the surgery. Help!! anyone!! Help!!! I want to pay to have lipo done but I'm thinking before I get into even MORE debt (because I just bought a house) I should handle the disorder. :( I don't want a big stomach again. In fact, I'd like to lose about 60 pounds. That was my goal after the tummy tuck. Because the tummy tuck is like taking a round person and putting a flat tummy on. The REST of the body doesn't match. I have been thinking of trying an all-liquid diet or laxatives lately. I'm on diuretics already though and I don't want to risk becoming too sick.
I would exercise, but I work 20 hour days 5 days a week!!! It is sooo hard to have so much to do and not be able to concentrate because you're hungry.
Any ideas? I'll try anything!! :( I can just feel myself becoming depressed over this and I just want to lose weight at this point. To go from 185lbs to about 125/130 would be so awesome!!! Anything... anything.. I'll try anything.
I already eat once a day and I usually just do an atkins like thing - just eat meat and cheese or meat and salad (but I cheat later in the day typically with sorbet or something) and of course I can't work 20 hour days without caffeine so I have mochas or lattes... What else can I do?? Please email me with things you know have worked or things any of you have tried. My email address is amour677@hotmail.com.
