Pilates No Good For Weight Loss
Researchers have been studying the effects of Pilates. The popular style of exercise (originally developed for dancers) has become a regular class at most gyms. It's great for strengthening the abdominal muscles - but for those touting any weight loss benefits - they might want to check this out:
During the study, Olson and her team asked ten people with an average of five years' experience with Pilates to follow basic, intermediate and advanced Pilates workouts for 30 to 45 minutes each, and measured how many calories they burned...
The researchers found that, on average, a person weighing 75 kilograms (or 165 pounds) burns 480 calories per hour from an advanced workout, 390 calories per hour from an intermediate routine, and 276 calories for every hour of a basic Pilates workout.
What is Pilates good for? It's a better workout for the obliques, and outperforms basic abdominal crunches.
"You can say Pilates is legitimate core training," she said. But if you're trying to lose weight, "you're going to definitely have to supplement with something else," such as a running regimen and diet, Olson noted.
I would guess that most people doing Pilates probably realized this? However some advertisers would have us believe otherwise: The tag line of the popular Winsor Pilates is "Sculpt your body slim".

I've been doing mat Stott pilates 5-6 times per week for the last 4 years. I'm very short-waisted and I actually see a lenthening that was never there before. In order to actually drop wight I do need to do some type of cardio workout along with it. I also feel that you do get a new awareness of your body which then works more effectively during other activities. I'm 52, feel great and have flexibilty that I had in my twenties.
ReplyI have started what I call a "30-day pilates challenge" where I aim to do a circle pilates video (60 minutes) every day for 30 days. I decided to do this after I noticed that the people leaving the body pump class I did were much heavier than the people coming in for the pilates class afterwards. Not proof that pilates helps weight loss but good enough for me.
So far I have done 7 workouts and I have noticed a difference in my body - my stomach appears to be flatter and my upper arms appear to have shrunk slightly.
If pilates is not working for you it might be that you aren't doing a long enough workout (I have noticed that a lot of the videos are only 20-30 minutes in length) or you aren't doing enough workouts.
ReplyHi, I am a Pilates teacher. Pilates is not a weight loss program but you really tone up. It is good to mix with cardio work too and then you will really see results. You also need to watch what you eat! You have got to be really pushing yourself at Pilates to lose a lot of weight. Find a good teacher and believe me you will tone up and look hot!

ReplyBeginner, intermediate and advanced modifications are simultaneously demonstrated. The Maui oceanfront setting and soothing music adds to the appeal. Nutritional and weight loss information is included to help you achieve your goals, however, the workout alone isnt an effective fat-burner.
Rose.
Replyok now im doing pilates 6 days a week and walking on my tradmill 6 days a week is that going to be enough to burn fat andx tone muscles i have also cut my calorie in take
ReplyHi Mandy,
I would make some room for weight training in there somewhere - even if you have to push a treadmill and/or pilates session out of the way. When you get to a point where you can start running on the treadmill, I would include that too. That said, try a variety of different forms of cardio.
All the best and I think it's great that you are so active!

ReplyI have been doing Winsor Pilates every other day for about a month. I started doing it to help ease lower back pain. The back pain went away almost immediately. I haven't gotten on a scale, but I have had lots of people ask if I've lost weight. Also, I have noticed that my jeans fit a bit better through the waist & hips. I am overweight& carry ALL of my weight around the middle (or that's at least how it feels when I shop for pants.)
The only dietary change I've made since the holidays is to limit my sugar intake (and by sugar I mean desserts...none of this "no carb" b.s. for me!) I don't know if Pilates helps with weight loss, but it sure does seem to suck in one's silhouette if done regularly.
ReplyI used to do an hour of Pilates 4 times a week for about three months and I dropped sooooo much weight so incredibly fast I was shocked. I've been doing pilates again for several days now, and hour a day and after day 1 I felt great! Like I kinda jumped right back into it. I know first hand that Pilates helps you lose alot of weight, very fast and very easy. I don't know what this thing is talking about, of course you lose weight, you lose alot and in the best way too.
ReplyI am a pilates instructor and personal trainer. Losing weight is 80% diet. You will loose inches with pilates plus all of the benefits pilates touts. The fact is, 3500 calories makes up on pound of body fat. To loose 1 lb you must make a calorie deficit. Calories in calories out. 500 per day. Some calories from exercise and some from diet. Simple....right?
ReplyI am trying to lose about 30 lbs and that nasty belly fat. I have been walking about 10-15 miles a week and also recently purchased a pilates reformer with a cardio rebounder on one of those shopping networks. It is fantastic!! I get the benefits of pilates along with the benefits of weight training (you pull your own weight) and then use the rebounder for my cardio. I do the pilates 30 minute routine each morning and the cardo every other day. I am dropping weight like no tomorrow!! This was the best $400 i ever spent!
Replyi have been using pilates along with my usual cardio of jogging, and i do weight training 3 days a week. I do pilates 3 to 4 times a week and have done so since 2003 (pilates) it has results. My body seems "elongated" it stretches you out-i feel great afterward. These studies are wrong-it is definately beneficial for everyone-especially those who can't get into exercise-i recommend it to everyone. A friend of mine has finally taken my advise and has been doing it almost a year now and says she wishes she listened sooner. Its a great workout and it does "slim" your body.
Total believer in Pilates :)
ReplyI've been doing pilates since the beggining of 2008. I'm extremely thin because of my genetics... I used to weight 92 pounds and after 6 months of doing pilates I gained 8 pounds... I reached to a point where I haven't been able to gain more weight, but I do feel great keep working out and feeling better about my body and posture.
ReplyI guess for every person it works differently..I've seen in my class how overweighted women have built beautiful bodies and have been able to loose weight.
One thing is for sure pilates does great for everyone!
"Researchers have been studying the effects of Pilates."
Who researched it, from which institute and where's the evidence?
"The popular style of exercise (originally developed for dancers)"
Pilates was invented to rehabilitate veterans returning from WW1.
Ignorance is everywhere, take this website (dietblog) with a pinch of salt!
ReplyThis study is just another way to bring pilates down,i lost 110lb from pilates, it is truly an amazing workout and has saved my life,i feel fit and in the best shape of my life so dont let this study tell you other wise, cause it works
