Seattle Sutton

Seattle Sutton (yes that's her real name) is the creator of a pre-packaged diet plan. Thanks to Vic who has given me the following outline of her experiences with Seattle Sutton:

Seattle Sutton is a prepackaged diet plan of fresh food that is provided twice a week. They have 2 levels, 1,000 calories that becomes 1,200 calories when you add 2 fat-free dairy products as recommended, or the 1,800 calorie plan with the same (or similar) recommendation. I've been doing the 1,200 calorie plan for 4 weeks. I'm going into my 5th week on Thursday. You start on Thursday when you pay and pick up your first set of meals. Then you return on Monday for the remainder of the week's meals.

Seattle Sutton is the name of the founder, a registered nurse who lives in downstate Illinois. She has a web site that shows menus and gives some background info. It's not a 'community' site, like Nutrisystems has. She calls it "Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating".

Seattle Sutton's Book
Seattle Sutton also has
her own diet book.
She has a couple of restaurants where you can get a meal to eat in or to go. There's one in Chicago, but I haven't been there in a couple of years. I don't know how extensive her business is nationwide. They have 2 types of business opportunities - one type that makes the meals, the other type is the meal distributor. My meal distributor just has an office with a desk and 4 large, sliding-glass door refrigerators. The office is in a building that houses medical professionals (dentist and doctor offices). You just walk in, pay, and take your bag of pre-packaged goodies.

The packages are plastic boxes with clear tops. They are labeled, but not consistently. Some foods come with complete nutritional analyses. Some just tell you what's inside, no nutritional info.

Nutrition

They claim 64 grams of protein is provided per day. I don't think so. I've counted and some days you get 64, and some days you get 35. I asked about this, and they said it 'balances out for the week' (I'm not convinced, but I haven't calculated an entire week), and that you shouldn't eat too much protein anyway. With my surgery preventing me from assimilating everything I eat, I AM concerned about getting enough protein.

It is a calorie and fat controlled plan. But I don't think it's healthful as in 'health food' healthful. It is somewhat 'old fashioned' in that it's not low-carb at all. You don't get any choices, but they don't serve any beef, which was a plus for my taste. She offers way too many real sugar sweets (muffins, sweet breads), especially for breakfast. She also offers fruit juices, which I think are nutritionally not worth the calorie cost. I just offer the breakfast foods to my family, and eat egg whites and whole grain toast, plain oatmeal or Total-type cereal with a fat-free milk or yogurt - anything but a muffin, thanks. I can't have too much sugar in one sitting thanks to my gastric bypass, not even a muffin.

Fresh Fruit

She provides fresh fruit in some, not all meals, on average 1 piece of fresh fruit a day. The fruit is very small in size and almost never ripe. They don't wash it or wrap it. The first week, I got a fresh (unripe) kiwi with my processed turkey 'steak' sandwich, which included a whole grain bun, lettuce, and low fat mayo. The unwashed, unprotected kiwi had 'shed' kiwi 'fur' onto the turkey. I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out what it was on the turkey (it looked like someone had emptied their used razor onto it) until I figured it out. Sigh.

I haven't had any adverse effects from her food, so I guess I'll live (LOL!).

Summary

The food is rather bland (tuna noodle casserole) but she does try to make it interesting (the chicken fajita was good, but not spicy). Nothing is repeated in a month, altho in the 5th week, I've begun to seen repeated meals. It costs me $99 a week for the 1,000 calorie plan. Not sure what the bigger plan costs. That's an 'average' cost. In some areas it's cheaper, but not more expensive, I don't think.

Since I started Seattle Sutton I've begun to exercise (jog 3 miles a day. 6 days a week). I think this has contributed to my feeling hungry, usually late in the day. I don't think 1,200 is enough calories for my activity level. I fill in with a mini-bag of popcorn, an extra yogurt or a piece of fruit at night. I've lost 9 pounds since I started. I think I gained a little muscle weight, tho.

I have been on SSHE since January 11. I have lost 20 plus pounds ( I have stopped weighing myself). I feel fantastic. I had gained over 40 pounds with my last pregnancy due to bedrest and other complications. My 'baby' is turning 4 this year so I knew I had to do something. I had success with the Zone after my first pregnancy but couldn't get it together with my very busy life now. I find the food generally good, some even excellent. Most important is the convenience of just grabbing my meals and taking them to work/playdates etc. I 'cheat' once a week - out to dinner or a special lunch - and find I am eating less even on the cheat meals. I then use my skipped lunch or dinner to replace a breakfast that week and the breakfast as a snack on a 'hungry' day. It is working really well for me - I get tons of compliments and I have energy for the first time in 4 years. AS far as headaches, I don't do the milk either - never a milk drinker but I do add a fat free sugar free yogurt like Yoplait lite (has 100 calories) and can help with the 3 pm hungies. Also make sure you are drinking enough H20 and haven't changed your caffeine intake.

I started the 1,200 SSHE plan three weeks ago, and I have lost 5 pounds so far. Overall I have enjoyed the meals, there have been two dinners that were pretty tasteless, but other than that the food has been really good. I like the variety, you could have potato skins loaded with chedder cheese and sour cream one day, and a crisp mixed greens salad with nuts and oranges the next. I want to lose another 10 pounds, but will probably stick with the plan after I reach my goal, because I feel so much better eating such a healthy well-balanced diet.

To anyone starting SSHE I would recommend drinking plenty of water especially in the begining because it is hard to adjust to consuming fewer calories. Also drinking herbal tea helps make me feel less hungry. I found the first day to be the hardest and every day after that got easier. There are still points in the day when I am hungry, but it's not constant like it was in the begining. I don't like milk so instead of drinking the recommended two glasses a day, I am eating two cups of fat free yogart. I always save one cup of yogart for right before I go to bed because I figure I can stand being a little bit hungry if I know there's still more food coming. I still cheat, I have ice cream on Sundays, but I feel like that keeps me from overindulging the rest of the week because I know I just have to get to Sunday. That has been my experiance so far, I hope this helps.

I'm planning on starting SSHE in two weeks. I just found out I'm lactose intolerant and need my doctor to ok this but besides the 2 glasses of milk a day, does the packaged food have a lot of dairy? Also, is it realistic to think I could lose about 2lbs a week? I'm not looking for "earth shattering" results, just more of a starting point since summer's right around the corner. I called the store that’s closest to me and found out that they are only open on Monday’s and Thursday’s till 7pm. I’m just hoping that I can get there by that time on those days. Sometimes work can run pretty late.

Thank you everyone for posting your experiences! I was skeptical about this but now I really want to try it. Being single and living alone, it can be hard to cook and I can only stand so much cereal or pizza!

Been on SSHE for two weeks. I am a big eater so I went with the 2000 calorie plan. I started out at 230 pounds and I’ve lost 6 pounds in the first two weeks. It has been pretty painless. I’ve still needed to supplement the menu a bit (I said I was a big eater) but I have been doing it sensibly, a side salad from the office cafeteria with lunch, a 100 calorie pack snack etc.

The quality of the food is generally excellent. I’m not a fussy eater, and I have pretty much liked everything. Good variety, easy to prepare etc. I tend to be rushed so never had time to really prepare healthy meals, I also was terrible with portion control. SSHE solves both problems.

Some of the food has been a little bland – a well stocked spice cabinet can fix that in a jiffy. I am not on a sodium reduced diet and my blood pressure is fine, but I still figure the less sodium, the better. So I tend to use salt-free spice blends to jazz up the food a bit now and then. I also use a few squirts of the Smart Balance buttery spray on some of the veggies and on some of the breads after I’ve toasted them.

So far I’m impressed.

With regards to the amount of dairy. I am lactose intolerant as well. I can eat some dairy, just not a lot. The two glasses of milk a day are recommended - not required. You could just skip them, or you could drink a lactose reduced milk or soy milk.

There is some dairy, but not a lot. There has been a modest number of items that include cheese, but none of them had a lot of cheese. I personally have had no problems with the dairy content.

Thanks Larry for the info. I'm going to start on Monday 4/16 and I'll probably skip the 2 glasses of milk although Dean's makes a lactose free milk that is just like regular milk but I'd rather throw some veggies/fruit in there for the extra 200 calories. Is there a certian day you can start it or can you go in on Monday or Thursday and pick up your meals?

I've just completed my first 5 weeks. I can't believe how much I like this plan. I am not creative at all when it comes to food planning and usually end up eating the same boring stuff and then going off plan. So this works very well for me.

I'm surprised that I'm not hungry. I'm on the 1200 cal/day plan. I'm 5'10, female and I weigh a lot. I stick pretty much to the plan, but if I'm feeling hungry I just add a salad with a non-fat dressing or a helping of steamed veggies.

I'm not a fan of the breads for breakfast. I'd rather have more egg type dishes. But, I tell myself that these breads are part of the overall diet and that having something sweet like that helps keep me on plan.

One of my favorite things is the 2 milk servings a day. I save them up for an after dinner treat.... I add some vanilla extract and some Splenda and whip it up for a milkshake. (ok, a very thin milkshake, but still quite tasty).

I think the food tastes OK. Although the asperagus is usually pretty poor. A few things I really like. But all of it is OK.

One thing that has struck me is how much volume I used to eat. I do think that in addition to calories, it's important to eat a reasonably sized meal. Otherwise, you need to keep eating a large volume to feel full, and then when you start eating less healthful meals, you really start packing it in.

I've lost over 2" around my waist in the first 4 weeks, so I'm very pleased so far.

I have been on the Seattle Sufton food plant for two weeks now. I was on it before for about four weeks and did loose weight, about 22 pounds. It came off and I have not gained it back, so I am back to try another 22 or so. I stopped because I have an illness and I needed to do other things with my money. It has gone up from $112 to $119 in my area, it has gotten too expensive. I probably will do five weeks and stop, for it is costly. I usually add, Mrs. Dash to some of the meals to make them more interesting. I hate brussel sprouts and polenta, they can keep that. But I wish we could order just the meals that we like, I probably would make the sacrifice with the cost if that was the case. I doubt that the cost went up because of food prices, we are not getting any more than what we got before. The other day I got an orange in my meal that was only about 1 1/2 inch in diameter! Where do they find this miniature fruit! It tasted fine, but where did it come from! I do get hungry and add yogurt or lettuce, that kind of thing to fill in the gaps.
I can't excercise much, because I have a disability and a lot of pain, but I try. Unfortunately the weight comes off slow because I am on Steroids. So I do my best. I wish you all the best - to loose weight is not an easy task.

Hi, my husband and I both are on Seattle Sutton currently. We just started our second week, and I am happy to report that I lost 8 pounds the first week and he lost 7 pounds. For the most part the food is good, however, we are not fish lovers and about once a week, if not more, there is some kind of fish. On those days I pick us up the lower fat Subway sandwiches and we have that instead. It does make you realize that we all eat entirely too much food! So we are going to try to stick this out as long as we can, without killing each other that is! Good luck to everyone!

Victoria, I am also on steriods for my crohn's and just started the plan. I take 40mg a day, what dose are you on? I'm only looking for about 2lbs a week weight loss. Just want to make sure that's realistic.

After 9 weeks I've lost a total of 4" from my waist.
This plan works!

Good afternoon, all!

I am finding that it is still hard to loose, even after cutting out the 2 glasses of milk. Are those of you on the plan exercising as well?

I got food poisoning from Seattle Sutton's quiche. When I requested a refund or a credit, I was told I "just must not be an egg person," and they refused.

Though I was losing about five pounds per week on Seattle Sutton's, I spent those weeks STARVING because it's just not enough food.

I haven't tried SSHE yet but i just ordered a trial week of nutrisystem and today was the first day and it was DISGUSTING! I also didn't realize how many additions were necessary to add to each entree, that takes alot of planning and cutting up of veggies which is exactly what i was trying to avoid. I'm getting married next may and getting desperate to lose weight, I plan to start SSHE after this week. Thanks for all the info those of you have posted; even the negative comments, but i just have to try it for myself. :)

I'm starting SSHE next week and I'm wondering if I should go for the 1,200 cal or the 2000 cal. diet plan. I like the 2000 cal plan better because I can eat a little bit more food and I plan to start on working out alot while I'm on it. I'm a girl so should I do the lower cal one? Most people are adding more food to the lower plan anyway, anyone got any advice?

Thanks!
