Seattle Sutton
Seattle Sutton (yes that's her real name) is the creator of a pre-packaged diet plan. Thanks to Vic who has given me the following outline of her experiences with Seattle Sutton:
Seattle Sutton is a prepackaged diet plan of fresh food that is provided twice a week. They have 2 levels, 1,000 calories that becomes 1,200 calories when you add 2 fat-free dairy products as recommended, or the 1,800 calorie plan with the same (or similar) recommendation. I've been doing the 1,200 calorie plan for 4 weeks. I'm going into my 5th week on Thursday. You start on Thursday when you pay and pick up your first set of meals. Then you return on Monday for the remainder of the week's meals.
Seattle Sutton is the name of the founder, a registered nurse who lives in downstate Illinois. She has a web site that shows menus and gives some background info. It's not a 'community' site, like Nutrisystems has. She calls it "Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating".
The packages are plastic boxes with clear tops. They are labeled, but not consistently. Some foods come with complete nutritional analyses. Some just tell you what's inside, no nutritional info.
Nutrition
They claim 64 grams of protein is provided per day. I don't think so. I've counted and some days you get 64, and some days you get 35. I asked about this, and they said it 'balances out for the week' (I'm not convinced, but I haven't calculated an entire week), and that you shouldn't eat too much protein anyway. With my surgery preventing me from assimilating everything I eat, I AM concerned about getting enough protein.
It is a calorie and fat controlled plan. But I don't think it's healthful as in 'health food' healthful. It is somewhat 'old fashioned' in that it's not low-carb at all. You don't get any choices, but they don't serve any beef, which was a plus for my taste. She offers way too many real sugar sweets (muffins, sweet breads), especially for breakfast. She also offers fruit juices, which I think are nutritionally not worth the calorie cost. I just offer the breakfast foods to my family, and eat egg whites and whole grain toast, plain oatmeal or Total-type cereal with a fat-free milk or yogurt - anything but a muffin, thanks. I can't have too much sugar in one sitting thanks to my gastric bypass, not even a muffin.
Fresh Fruit
She provides fresh fruit in some, not all meals, on average 1 piece of fresh fruit a day. The fruit is very small in size and almost never ripe. They don't wash it or wrap it. The first week, I got a fresh (unripe) kiwi with my processed turkey 'steak' sandwich, which included a whole grain bun, lettuce, and low fat mayo. The unwashed, unprotected kiwi had 'shed' kiwi 'fur' onto the turkey. I spent a good bit of time trying to figure out what it was on the turkey (it looked like someone had emptied their used razor onto it) until I figured it out. Sigh.
I haven't had any adverse effects from her food, so I guess I'll live (LOL!).
Summary
The food is rather bland (tuna noodle casserole) but she does try to make it interesting (the chicken fajita was good, but not spicy). Nothing is repeated in a month, altho in the 5th week, I've begun to seen repeated meals. It costs me $99 a week for the 1,000 calorie plan. Not sure what the bigger plan costs. That's an 'average' cost. In some areas it's cheaper, but not more expensive, I don't think.
Since I started Seattle Sutton I've begun to exercise (jog 3 miles a day. 6 days a week). I think this has contributed to my feeling hungry, usually late in the day. I don't think 1,200 is enough calories for my activity level. I fill in with a mini-bag of popcorn, an extra yogurt or a piece of fruit at night. I've lost 9 pounds since I started. I think I gained a little muscle weight, tho.
UPDATE: You can see a complete list of diet food delivery services here.

I just saw a Seattle Sutton representative on channel 5, NBC. I am searching for the fee/charges for the 1000 calorie diet.
Thank You....jacque steinberger
ReplyJacque, from what I understand the price for the 1,000 cals per day option is around $99 per week. Apparently the price can vary between cities/outlets,
Replycan't imagine why they won't do custom orders. I'm getting back into bodybuilding after nearly a 20 year lay off and need to follow a regimented diet routine consisting of chicken or turkey, brown rice or yam and a vegetable (broccoli) if anyone knows of such a place in the Chicago area please let me know.
ReplyHow about a grocery store.
ReplyJohn have you considered investing in a freezer? I just cook a ton of brown rice, yams etc. and keep them in the freezer to make quick meals. I also leave the turkey/chicken/fish in a pre-measured portion and cooked so all it takes is microwaving. That way I only really need to spend time in the kitchen once a month.
ReplyJan, that's a really great idea!! Making your very own portion-controlled frozen dinners is a great way to save time, money, and calories. My grandma made tons of turkey stock at Thanksgiving time and froze it for soups later. And my mother-in-law freezes garden corn and green beans for later in the winter. The possibilities are endless. One thing about buying a freezer though: buy a chest-type one that opens on top, it's more energy efficient. :)
ReplyI don't really understand why you are on this diet plan if you do not find it to be healthy food or as you said bland and not prepared well? It sounds like you are slamming Seattle Sutton, yet you say you are starting your 5th week. I started on this 11 days ago and have lost 9lbs, I feel great and find the food to be very diverse and appealing.
ReplySeattle food is good for me. I'm no cook and like having tasty food prepared. Yes, sometimes breakfast looks bleak but I supplement with my own yogurt. The best part is no contract to sign. If I'm having a busy week that keeps me away from home, I just don't order for that time period. I've been on it off and on for 6 weeks, lost 13 lbs. I don't do diets well, I admit I cheat. I look at Seattle food as a healthy way of eating for my lifestyle. I'm on the 1000 cal. meal plan. Yes, $99 per week sounds like a lot, probably because it's coming out of pocket all at once. I estimated how much I was spending eating out through out the week, which I did all the time and I spent as much and more, eating any ol' thing. I just want a closer distribution center so I won't have to travel so far to get my food.
ReplyI am interested in time commitment and cost of the program for a month.
Anita
ReplyI am a distributor in South-central, WI. If you are in that area, let me know and I can give you details on pricing for our area.
ReplyIt is $104/week where I live ($110 for the larger portions.) Thought I'd mention that since the article says she thinks it won't be more than $99.
Also... it did not look like a slam to me. Just an honest evaluation. Some of the food is tasty, some not, but it's always convenient. 1200 calories is quite low, and I'm sure a lot of us supplement that with some nice tasty fresh fruit or other healthy snacks. My kids also get most of the breakfasts... what I'd already been eating is better for me and just as convenient, but the kids really like them.
There is no commitment, but also no choices. You take everything for the week or nothing. Luckily, with a family of 5, there is someone to eat just about everything. It's great for someone who simply doesn't have time to cook during the week (I leave home at 5:40am, get back at 6pm if I'm lucky -- everyone's already hungry.) And I spend too much time playing catch-up with laundry, housework, and quality time with the family on weekends to waste it slaving in the kitchen preparing the week's meals.
ReplyWouldn't it be nice to have a breakfast and lunch plan only and have the dinners optional? It would be easy to stay on Seattle Sutton and still make and share a nutrional dinner for the family.
ReplyI have been on the 1200 calorie, and my husband the 2000 calorie for 3 weeks now. I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised. The food is really good, the variety is good and I don't have to think about what I am going to eat and when I am going to prepare it.
ReplyIt took me a few days to get accustomed to the smaller portion sizes, but what the food lacks in portion size, it makes up for in taste. I have read several reviews saying the food was bland and boring, but I haven't thought so. I mean, when you need to lose weight, you can't continue to eat the large amounts of pizza, wings and burgers that put the weight on in the first place. I have lost 14 pounds during my first 3 weeks, my husband has lost 7 pounds. If you are like us, need to lose weight but work full time and have other responsibilities, I recommend this diet plan. We are very pleased. My husband is a much pickier eater than I am, so the true test was when he ate the pita with hummas and cucumber sauce, and pronounced it good. I knew at that point this was a diet plan we could stick with.
I have been off and on Seattle Sutton for the past 6 years. I'm not too good about exercising, and if I just eat the program's food, and even a dessert of a Nabisco 100-calorie pack every night, I ALWAYS lose weight - it melts off and is effortless. I immediately have more energy every time I go back on the plan.
The key phrase, of course, is "every time I go back on." I live in the Chicago area, and the 2,000 calorie plan is $120 PER WEEK. I think going from about 3,500 calories a day before starting (which I think is a realistic daily intake for overweight people), down to 1,000 is incredibly bad for metabolism and overall nourishment. Your body can actually go into starvation mode, and make you pack on even more weight. Anyway, I am a paycheck to paycheck person, and there have been months at a time when I cannot afford the food. I am quite simply a food addict, and usually gain whatever I lost, once I go off the plan.
I just started again one month ago, after one month on NutriSystem. After enduring the ridiculous plan that is NutriSystem, I could not WAIT to get back on SSHE. It is now a priority in my husband's and my budget, right after rent and car payments. It's not sprouts and tofu, but it is much more healthful and balanced than the stuff I ate that made me fat. In 4 weeks, I can see my body frame getting smaller. My curves are more defined and not just fat. I look forward to my meals every day. Not all of them are to die for, but about 85% of them are absolutely delicious.
I love Seattle Sutton's Healthy Eating. I really wish it was less expensive, but my health and longevity are much more important than frivolous items that have no long-term benefits.
If you're overweight, try as hard as you can to start this program. i just heard a radio commercial that said they are FINALLY nationwide. God bless 'em!
ReplyMy husband and I have been enjoying Seattle Sutton meals for 8 months now. We order one set of meals. Between lunches or dinners out, we always seem to have plenty of food for the two of us. I think the cost is extremely reasonable considering the alternative of buying groceries - many times in larger quantities than needed - or eating food from restaurants a few times a week.
ReplyIts great to go to the fridge and look through the containers and have a complete meal already prepared. Its like having a personal chef!
Just picked up my first Seattle Sutton meals. Planning on doing the prepacked meals until the end of July, 2006 to see if I can lose some weight. I will try to check in weekly to progress my findings.
ReplyHave been on 1200cal Seattle Sutton for four weeks now and have only lost 4 pounds, all in the first week, and am getting really discouraged.
I am exercising. I weigh 180lbs. I supplement the 1200cals with toast and low-cal butter to equal about 1500cals a day.
Anyone else having this problem?
ReplyToo many carbs not enough protein.
ReplyI am going to order Seattle Sutton next week, everything said in this blog seems too good to be true!!
ReplyI started the 1200cal Seattle Sutton meal program for the simple reason that my wife was going on vacation for a month and I would likely not eat healthy while she was gone (I could probably survive on some bags of chips, cheese, and deli meat, plus cookies and other snacks). I'm not overweight (5'9" 150 lbs, 38yo), so I was really just doing this so I could survive while she was gone.
The food has been fine, I like the variety. I suppose every day there are foods that I wouldn't normally eat, but I tell myself, "This is probably good for you" and eat it anyway. The convenience is VERY nice. I take my breakfasts and lunches to work and leave them in the fridge there, my dinners at home. Now I am actually eating breakfast, instead of skipping it, and the extra small meal means that the smaller lunch portion is quite adequate in meeting my hunger. Costwise, I think it is very good considering simply taking the family out to eat 2 times a week at a restaurant almost always tops $100. It works out to about $4 per meal, which is fine by me.
Seattle Sutton has not replaced my wife - no fringe benefits ;-) - but it has been a nice alternative for someone in my situation.
ReplyI start seattle sutton a week ago. I am going into my 2nd week. I am on the 1200 plan, which is not enough food, and I supplement it to about 500 calories. I lost 2 pounds the first week. :)
ReplyI don't consider myself a picky eater. I just think the food is okay tasting. My biggest complaint is muffin breakfast. Muffins are not breakfast to me, and I don't like the way they taste. Plus since I am paying all this money I want something prepared. Just throwing a whole tomato, kiwi, or apple in my box. Does not suffice. Makes me feel cheated. Still sshe has given me a few menu ideas for when I go off the plan. I just wish there was a program with more healthy food like the tofu, sprouts, vegetable pastas etc.
I've been looking at the home delivery diets. This one looks good but the cost where I live makes it one of the more expensive diets of this kind.
ReplyIt's $198 for the 1200 calorie diet. Have the rates gone up everywhere or just in certain states?
I have been using them for 2 months now and lost 15 pounds with the program. The first 4 weeks I was on the 2500 calorie plan. The last month I switched to the 1000 calorie plan. I did get hungry at first when I switched but I just drank lots of water. The biggest problem with this program is the price. Everything else is perfect. The price kills me, I pay $115 a week (includes two delivery). That’s $460 a month for one person !!! That’s crazy, I am on a tight budget and that is pretty hard to do. I am going to switch to nutrisystem this week just because it’s $170 a month cheaper. Hopefully I will have the same level of success I had with SSHE with nutrisystem for almost half the cost. As far as the program itself goes if you can afford it then I would do it. I really loved the program. It’s so easy and simple and it taste great. I wish it was $100 less a month, I would be willing to pay an extra $70 a month over nutrisystem for it, but it’s not so I’ll be switching this week.
ReplyI have a post here from March. I'm still on the program and doing well. I just feel so much better physically. The aches and pains from the weight lessen each day.
I wanted to write, especially to Jason (the last poster) about SSHE vs. Nutrisystem. As I say in my original post, Nutrisystem is not totally honest with their advertising. I know because I was on it, and VERY dissapointed.
Yes, they do provide you with SOME things to eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert. But these "meals" are, in fact, only the "skeleton" of the program. You must add your own foods around this foundation. If you don't, you will literally starve. For instance, I happen to like muffins for breakfast, so I ordered a bunch from Nutrisystem. What they don't reveal in the commercials, or even on the website after a quick once-over, is that you personally need to shop for, buy, and eat with the small, chemical tasting muffins a fruit, and a container of yogurt. For lunch, you have their small offering, but must shop for, buy, and eat salad vegetables, a dairy serving, and yet another protein serving. Dinner is the same, but you have to double up on your own vegetables. On the list of acceptable protein servings, there is actually portion measures for beef, chicken, turkey, etc. It's like - wait - didn't I already pay for all the food and servings I need to eat every day? NOT AT ALL.
So all of that means that the money you think you're saving by switching from SSHE to Nutrisystem is still actually spent - you just have to shop for and buy it all yourself. Hence, SSHE's selling point is that ALL your food is included. All produce, dairy, carbs, protein - SSHE has it all.
In conslusion, my experience was that Nutrisystem actually cost me MORE than SSHE, when I spent the gas driving to and from the grocery store, actually buying fresh food (fatty food is cheap, healthy food, not so much), spending at least an hour at the store usually twice a week, and of course, paying handsomely at the check-out.
I hope Jason has a better experience than I did. Write a post here to let us know. I think SSHE is a much better deal in the big picture.
ReplyI have been on SSHE for 10 weeks now alternating between the 1200 and 2000 cal plan and have lost 35 lbs. I do add about 300 extra calories/day on the 1200 plan because it often does not seem like enough. I think most of the meals are very good, but some leave alot to be desired. The "Vegatable Chop Suey" is nothing more than cream of chicken soup and a few vegies.
ReplyAlso two of the breakfasts that are listed as pastries have been changed to dry flax cereal. However, all in all, the food is still better than Nutri-systems and well worth the money.
I have been on the Seattle Sutton Diet since October 24, 2005. When I started the program the cost was $110.00, slowly the cost went to $112.00, and now the cost is $119.00 for 1200 calorie program. I have been laid off, and can not afford your program any longer, because of the cost. I was told by my district that the company raised the price because food went up.I would like to know is, who really is raising my price for the week? I truly love your program, and I do not want to stop it.
Thank you for your comment box.

ReplyI'm a busy biochemistry graduate student and this sounded like a god-send for me. I started SSHE on Oct. 9 after reading these reviews. What's really nice about it so far is the convenience factor. It boggles my mind about how stressed out I get about what to make for dinner, will I have time, what the hell am I going to eat for breakfast and lunch??!!! Etc. etc. But now, I don't have those issues anymore and I can stress about other things instead. I am trying my best to keep a detailed diary about what I am doing, the food and how it tastes, my weight etc. You can access it at:
http://moonchasingme.livejournal.com
Feel free to sign up for your own livejournal account and friend me or leave comments on the site. I hope to stick with this for a while and would love the support.
ReplyJust an update. I lost 10 pounds my first week which is more than I expected. I weigh A LOT though so definitely, my results are not typical. If you read my journal, you'll see that I even added on extra calories and average around 1500-1600 a day. Good luck to you all.
ReplyA couple of people are blogging about their experiences with the Seattle Sutton diet at http://seattlesuttonliving.com -- It is interesting to see their reaction to the food and to track their results.
ReplyMy husband and I were on SSHE for almost a complete year before an extended trip forced a break. When we returned we found it very difficult to continue on SSHE. There were just too many meals that we had become unable to eat. As much as we loved being on it we had to stop ordering because of the amount of food we ended up throwing out. There is not enough flexibility on the plan and believe me, after a while the number of meals you can't stand increases. We've been looking for a replacement for SSHE in the Chicago area. Nutri-systems is not an option - doesn't seem like real food!
ReplyI should add that we both lost a lot of weight on SSHE but have sadly started putting it back on.
ReplyI am a middle school teacher and love the convenience of the meal plan. The only thing I really didn’t like were the brussel sprouts but hey, who can make brussel sprouts taste good?? Anyway, I have been on it for three months and lost 35 pounds. My blood sugar levels are leveled out and I don’t find myself hungry at odd times of the day like I use to. I do wish that they would have more than the five week rotation but I do love the convenience and the food is more than adequate for the cost of not having to worry about what I am going to cook and to know I am eating healthy at the same time.
ReplyI have been on Seattle sutton. I would rate this as the best diet there is. The food is good and compared to Nutrisystem which I have also tried - there is no comparison.
I found after a few weeks from switching from a really bad fast food diet to this - my health improved greatly and I just feel better. I lost weight slowly and steady - and was not really hungry after eating the 2000 calorie plan.
I just eat these meals to maintain my health as I eat fast food otherwise being a single guy and not the best cook :)
ReplyI just started SSHE - 1,200 and pay $105 for pick up from a location close to my home. Thus far the food is much better than Jenny Craig and Nutri-System. I supplement this diet with two LA Weight-Loss bars per day and yogurt in the morning which makes it a 1,600 calarie per day diet. If I adapt to it long-term, I just hope SSHE stays in business. I was w/Nutri-System a few years ago when they filed for Bankruptcy and then insisted that I pay again to continue. Both Jenny Craig and L.A. Weight-Loss closed down their stores in my town and invited me to drive an hour to 90 minutes to the closest store to weigh in and pick up food -- no thank you :-(. I really like the fact that I can buy SSHE food a week at a time and I don't have any membership fees to pay.
ReplyThanks for the review. I was thinking about trying them but I think I'll pass. My initial thought would be that it would help me with discipline, but then again, the grocer is just down the street. I think I'll go back to the old-fashioned plan of calorie counting. When I'm honest, its brutal and revealing.
If anyone does not know about it yet, www.fitday.com is a great site for calorie tracking. I finally broke down and bought their full software so I could enter my own recipies. It works great.
ReplyI ran across an interesting blog on the Seattle Sutton program at http://seattlesuttonliving.com -- a couple is posting their experiences with the diet and reviews of the food. It's good to get a real-life view of the diet plan.
ReplyIm starting the Seattle Sutton diet tommorow. I have read a lot of the posts about those of you whom have lost 35 pounds in 3 months.Thats amazing! Right now im 5'9 and weigh about 175 lbs. I hope to lose about 25 lbs. by end of March- middle of April if not sooner. Does anyone have any tips for me to help my reach my goals?
Thanks!

ReplyI was on SSHE back in the late 1990s, and did very well in the first nine months, exercising daily and losing 80 pounds (from 405 to 325). But, after that time, I became bored with the food (even though it was much more varied than I was eating on my own) and started "supplementing." Finally, after a few more months in which the weight was slowly creeping back, I gave up on the diet completely, stopped exercising, and went back to my old eating habits.
Now that I've put all that weight plus quite a bit more back on, I started back on the diet five weeks ago. I'm not weighing myself, but have noticed that my waist is already getting slightly smaller. My initial goal is to lose 130 pounds in the first nine months (possible when you're at my weight), and then to try Weight Watchers for the final quarter of the year to avoid the boredom factor and also to see if I can maintain/continue to lose weight when I have to cook my own food.
SSHE's food is good quality, gives me lots of ideas for how to cook on my own, and actually got me to like bell peppers for the first time in my life--now they're my favorite veggie! (Although brussel sprouts are still hated, no matter how often she puts them on the menu.) I have had a few meals I couldn't eat, but that's a taste factor, not a quality issue. I keep frozen veggies to replace what veggies I don't like, and have a few oranges to replace fruit.
Surprisingly enough, even though I'm on the 1200-calorie plan, I haven't had real hunger pangs more than once, when I ate a turkey burger from my work cafeteria in addition to my diet lunch. I have had a few instances of "I need something sweet NOW!", but just reminded myself to get back on the diet the next day. I have also started exercising (slowly to start!), which really helps with burning those excess calories.
My distributor's prices are $110/week for the 1200-calorie plan ($135 for the 2000), but she does offer some small discounts ($5 off if you pay cash, another $5/week off if you pay for 5 weeks at once). I did ask about the nationwide service, and she explained that they only have the one cooking location in central Illinois, so the twice-weekly overnight shipping costs add quite a bit to the normal charge.
If you can afford it, I can definitely recommend this program! It's not for everyone (my dad tried it and missed his red meat too much), but it does work.
ReplyI have to agree that there is not enough protein in the Seattle Sutton Healthy (?) eating plan. I have low blood sugar and you have to eat properly everyday, not average the protein for the week. Same with fruits and veggies. My husband and I have been on the plan a week and it's killing me. Right now my blood sugar is very low and it's causing a headache. Also, not everyone can handle fresh veggies everyday. I don't recommend the plan.
ReplyI tried Seattle Sutton for four months in 2005 and lost 35 pounds. I was very pleased. I can diet but I hate to plan or cook meals. Nuking is more my style. I gained 10 pounds so recently went back on Seattle Sutton as I need to lose more weight anyway.
In general the main meals are good, some even tasty. I am not a red meat person so the turkey, chicken and vegetarian style dishes are welcome. I would prefer they lower the price a little and let us buy our own fruit and fruit juice. The fruit is rarely ripe and the concentrated juice has too much sugar. There is also more bread than I normally eat. My dogs get the fish as I don't eat fish.
You can't have everything with a diet plan that you don't prepare yourself so Seattle Sutton is probably pretty good. I sometimes put a dab of butter on a potato, that sort of thing. In general, I'm happy with the plan and do recommend it to people.
ReplyI've been on Seattle Sutten for 6 days (1200) and have a blinding headache every day. I'm not drinking the milk though. Think that may be the problem?
ReplyI have been on Seattle Sutton food plan for two weeks and have lost 6 pounds. I find the food very good and as with any food plan there are a few things I don't eat such as eggs; but overall it is the best plan I have experienced. In the past I was on Jenny Craig, which was ok. Last year I tried Nutrisystem and must say the food was not good, in fact had to throw most of it out.
