Nuts Are Good Now?

A heavily syndicated article about the benefits of peanuts has been in most newspapers recently:

Peanuts, a dietary outcast during the fat-phobic 1990s, have made a comeback, with consumption soaring to its highest level in nearly two decades and more doctors recommending nuts as part of a heart-healthy diet.

US consumption of peanuts and peanut butter has soared over the last few years. Sometimes it's no surprise the average consumer struggles to choose "healthy" foods. That's because the definition of a healthy food changes each decade.

The low-fat guidelines made us fear anything with fat in it; eggs, nuts, butter, even avocados. So we processed a lot of food to take most of the fat out, and now authorities advise us to be wary of a good number of processed foods:

The federal government's latest dietary guidelines say peanuts, which contain unsaturated fats, can be eaten in moderation.

"Now we know that the type of fat found in peanuts is actually good for us," said Lona Sandon with the American Dietetic Association. "It doesn't clog our arteries like saturated fat. It helps keep the arteries clean."

I wonder if even that statement will be proven wrong over the next decade.

Moderation...

Fats have 9 calories per gram, compared to carbs and proteins with 4 calories per gram.

Or maybe Caloric information doesn't mean as much as it used to on a low Cal diets.

I eat a controlled (not low) carb diet, where I only eat some good carbs. I find that I have to watch out for the nuts, as they are high in calories and will undermine my weight loss efforts. I agree they are healthy, but you need to control the quantity that you eat!

Well balanced, low calorie and low fat diets are the way to go. Some many things that are banned on one diet can be so essential to good health . Any diet that deprives you it one that people will not stick with. Check out http://home.earthlink.net/~the-fat-race

I haven't had the problem sticking with a low carb Atkins diet for over a year now. I have a hard time finding an essential to good health piece in sugar, white flour, or starches. If someone can tell me why high fructose syrup, sugar laden foods, or a potato would be necessary, I am all ears. If it is because we have had them in the past or that you can't stick with a limitation, I would ask how we can ever expect to change long term habits.

Do you tell a cigarette smoke to control his smoking or do you ask him to stop what is killing him.
