Cookie Monster Cuts Back On Cookies
Veteran children's show Sesame Street have decided it's time to put the Cookie Monster on a diet:
...he will learn that, as one of the show's new nutrition-oriented songs puts it, "A cookie is a sometime food."
Cookie Monster won't be going completely over the top - just "broadening his eating habits".
What strange times we live in.

That is one of the craziest things I have ever heard. I grew up on Sesame Street, and Cookie Monster was my favorite character. He is now my sons favorite character on the show as well. Parents need to start admitting that its their fault if they are unable to maintain a healthy diet for their child(ren) and quit blaming innocent sources. Why should everyone else pay the price in having what they love changed to please a few people who shun responsibility?
Replyomg You are so right. Poor cookie monster. He is my son's favorite as well. He has never asked me for cookies because cookie monster eats them and if he had, i would tell him what any "normal" parent should. You eat your lunch and fruit first and you may have a cookie occasionally. Damn, one or two cookies will not kill anyone. Those freakazoid moms out there can go to Whole Foods and buy organic ones if they wish. Oh and for God sakes they should stop drinking wine at their kid's play dates. Oh yeah like that's better than a cookie.
ReplySheesh! What next? Changing Cookie Monster's name to "Carrot Monster" or maybe a more generic "Healthy Snack Monster" and what about the negative connotation of "monster"? Maybe we're looking at poor Cookie becoming the "Fuzzy Blue Canada Food Guide Representative"?
Not to mention what will happen to Oscar the Grouch - the whole homeless thing and likely a prescription for antidepressants so he's not so grouchy...
ReplyMe not going to stand for this. Me tell agent not to renew contract. Me going to HBO and do own show.
ReplyThis is so wrong! How could they do this! Hes a COOKIE MONSTER! He can't be eating the Green Foods! The Cookie Monster only eats Cookies! From now on im watching Dora.
ReplyThat's lame, I dont think kids even think about food when they see the cookie monster. He's just some goofy puppet.
ReplyBelieve it or not, Cookie Monster's battle with the Obesity Police was foreshadowed in an upcoming book.

ReplyI don't get it. How long has Sesame Street been on the air? What 30, almost 40 years, and NOW they want to change Cookie Monster... the MONSTER of the COOKIE!! Why don't they just come out and expose everyone's problems: Telly is a Manic Depressive, SOMETHING is wrong with Big Bird because he's been six years old for over 20 years, Bert is a Control Freak who has some wierd thing for Pigeons....You could break everyone down and ruin the entire show ...or... you could just leave well enough alone! If I remember correctly, Cookie Monster taught me how NOT to gorge myself on the goodies, not the other way around.
Replythis is crazy!! You cant change my favorite charcater!
Replywhat is the point of putting a a hairy muppet if he is on a diet? Duh! I think this is the stupidest idea created!! You cant do this to my daughter! She wont sleep now, and now i have to throw out all her tapes, because she is afaid of cookie monster now for some reason! You people are really nuts whoever's idea is to change cookie monster! I am sorry but this is crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CRAZY!! Why are u changin cookie monster! You people are weidos!! What seamse street has been on for 30 yrs and now u want to change it around! If i remember cookie monster hate soo much cookies that when i was little i thought that "Hey this muppet eats so much cookies and he is fat, so why should i eat them!" Do u people think that kids today think that cookie monster teaches kids to eat cookies? You know what that is not true!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Replysorry i spelled hate it is really ATE
ReplyCOME ON! how can anyone possibly take one of sesmae street's most be-loved and longest running character and change him? Even if he were to send a bad message about eating (which he doesn't) why should it matter? I thought people weren't supossed to care what others think about them, or are we now changing our outlook on that too?
ReplyIt's high time that Cookie Monster cut back because
Replygluttony is bad. Cookie Monster needs to learn moderation and self control, just like we expect our kids to. Don't let it ruin your day just because that fuzzy blue guy is deciding to expand his eating horizons. Give the poor monster a break. Well I gotta go now because the timer went off on my chocolate chip cookies.
It is up to parenting to do this, control what your child eats (up to a certain age of course). Nothing is wrong with cookies, moderation is key.
Bring on the Cookies...
Who is behind this change?
ReplyChanging cookie monster is the worst thing that could happen in the entire world! I mean it is not his fault parents do not give their children the right foods. I mean if you change cookie monster you would let down so many people just to please a few. I mean hello popular soverngty. i have watched this show for 12 years and i still watch it today if they change cookie monster the world will go to an end! If you change what he eats then you will have to change his name and that would be like changing your name right now. If they change cookie monster then they just dissapointed the wrong people!
Replyok this has a good thing to it and a bad thing
Replygood...
kids want to be like cm so he now eats veggies
bad... sesame street is great its original and they changed it...?
This is a disgrace...why are they blaming innocent cookie monster for BAD PARENTING?!?! SERIOUSLY PEOPLE! This is a bunch of crap. I LOVED Cookie Monster...not to mention all Sesame Street had to offer way back in the 90s for me. But see, what I don't get is why they let a blood sucking vampire teach your children how to count (uh oh ive already said too much...maybe the Count will disapper) yet...fattnes is all of a sudden the biggest problem in the United States...really, we have bigger things to worry about then a blue monster on a PRESCHOOL kids show, scarfing his face full of chocolate chip cookies. Changing cookie monster is a silly silly idea. I hate TV.
ReplyI don't think that Cookie Monster should be changed to "Veggie Monster". It is the parents job to teach their child(ren) to eat healthy. I think turning Oscar the Grouch into "Happy Monster" is ok but not turning Cookie Monster into a fruits and vegitable eater. NO WAY!!!!!
ReplyMy children are now almost 30 years old. They read at an early age. They swear that besides being read to by me they learned it from Sesame Street. Both girls went on to earn college scholarships. I'm not saying that Sesame Street put my kids in college, but as little kids they did learn and just maybe cookie monster's abuse of cookies makes kids see not to do that. Leave him alone. Changing cookie monster would be like someone altering I Love Lucy. We need our fun history.
ReplyNext thing we know, Bert & Ernie will be getting seperate apartments so that the homo-phobes don't go nuts. Elmo needs Ritalin, and we need to get Big Bird off the steroids. Come on! Six feet tall, a boy, and has this high-pitched squeaky voice. I understand wanting to be politically correct, but changing Sesame Street is sacriligeous. People need to stop blaming everything for their kids' weight problems and look in their own kitchen cupboards. Maybe taing the kids to McDonalds twice a week and having an unlimited supply of Oreos and Twinkies is the real issue.
ReplyThis is an outrage!! After all these years, NOW you are going to change him?? He rox just the way he is. If you change him, I can guarentee you will go off the air before you can even say cookies!!!!!!
ReplyOMG!! You are so mean...What has the Cookie Monster done to you guys? HUH HUH HUH??? He is in love with Cookies, you cant take them away from him. If you do he will go into major deppression. If your gonna change Cookie Monster then you might as well as change all the other characters. Freakin Oscar the Grouch lives in a garbage can i wonder why his is so grouchy!!
ReplyThe Count is a vampire, why dont you portray this count as his true self?
UGHHH I love Cookie Monster, if you change him it will be the end of the world!
I am appauled and angry at this development. I find it hard to beleive that the presence of a loveble cookie obsessed monster on children's television is responsible for the obesity of today's children. What is going on here! what happened to teaching your children youself? I mean i know that my eating habits are not a result of idolising a cookie-a-holic. it's because my mother handed me food and said eat this...and that's how i learned how much to eat. I think it's pretty obvious that you are not supposed to always eat cookies but to make a song called, "Cookies are a sometimes food" is almost insulting. Children are smarter than people think. By dummbing down Sesame Street we're dumbing down our children aswell.
ReplyHey, people!! If your reading this well, yeah!! Anyways, I think Sesame Street should make a new monster or something cause you can't do this to people that watch your show!! It's gay changing Cookie Monster!! He was there for us like 30 years now your going to change some kind of Health Monster!! That is so freaking lame!! I bet if you change it, nobody is going to watch your stupid show anymore!! So, please don't change Cookie Monster!! He's the best of all Sesame Street's characters espically Big Bird!! So, yeah!! Well, peace out, Sesame Street peeps!!
Replyi think cookie monster should be as fat as he want just dont make him go on a diet hi matthew a i love u like a cookie monster
ReplyI love the cookie monster, and for the years i have watched him i have never been driven to eat cookies, he just made me laugh!!!a PARENTS job is to control (to a certain age) there kids eating habits and there are more fatting foods out these days and PARENTS don't need to be changing the BEST OF THE BEST charater on sesame street just because they think its making there kids eat bad!!!
ReplyThat is terrible! I am a 13 year old but i still love sesame street! the cookie monster is the best character ever. I am even dedicating a school project on how the cookie monster has been unfairly treated! does anyone else have a say on whats going on???
ReplyI WILL WRITE A LETTER TO THE SHOW!
C is for cookie! Thats good enough for me!!!
ReplyHow stupid please it's not cookie monster's fault if you're fat. I want back my cookie!
ReplyOH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS! I cant believe this! You can not change a puppets diet after, what 30 years! We should sue who ever made this wicked disicion. I miss him already!GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Whoever did this is a wicked wicked man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Replyor women!
ReplyOkay, this is crazy! Cookie monster is the "cookie monster!!" Which part do the producers not get? This is just ridiculous! So what if the obesity rate among kids has quadrupled? Sure it is quite bad, but it's the parents' fault!!!! And to that guy Steve who agreed with this catastrophe, that is crazy! If cookie monster was going to "expand his eating horizon" he would have done it years ago!!! I agree with Katrina who said that all the muppets are strnge in their own way. I mean, if kids start running away and become depressed and live in trashe cans, are they going to give Oscar the Grouch some anti-depressants and put him in some big Beverly Hills house!! Just because parent's won't take the blame for what their kids do!! It's crazy!! Everything a kid does is because of the parents!! Everything!!!! They need to wake up and smell the coffee. If you're kid is overwieght, put them on a diet!! Don't blame an innocent TV character!! So parents, stop looking for the easy way out. Step up to the plate and take the blame!!!
ReplyOh..c'mon now...
The Cookie Monster...eating healthy snacks?
Being politically correct is ok, but this is just taking PC a little too far. He's a great charicter, and he is *not* the cause of childhood obesity.
I mean, what's next...putting him into rehab for his cookie addiction?
(yah..yah...me cookie monster..me addicted to cookies...HI COOKIE MONSTER!)
They'll be putting Oscar the Grouch on Prozac next. Honestly..the Sesame Street formula has worked successfully for 35 years now. If it ain't broke..don't fix it.
ReplySeseme street sucks!! I grew up on the Cookie Monster and they can't ruin him for me. It's not like they were saying always eat cookies, they were always telling him not to do it. Screw Seseme Street and all their tendencies!
ReplyI hate Seseme Street!
ReplyIf you watch cookie monster very cafefully while he is gorging himself on cookies-the cookies don't actually get swallowed. he just breaks them up into little tiny pieces. It should make both camps happy
ReplyCome on... Cookie Monster was loved by probably evry 4 year-old in America. You can't just ruin all those little kids' childhood favorite character just because there are a lot of terrible parents in the world. Whoever decided to do this should be fired. It's just sacrilige. PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyI heard about the Cookie Monster thing. I can't believe they're changing him! I remember seeing the show when I was little and I seeing Cookie Monster eat a bunch of cookies never made me need to eat them too, geez. How dumb do they think kids are? I remember thinking "Wow, Cookie Monster sure eats a lot of cookies, I wonder if he ever eats broccoli?" I came up with the conclusion that he does eat good foods, just not on TV. I mean, yeah, all this PC crap has to end...it's a kid's show for cryin' out loud. Kids LIKE Cookie Monster!
Replyi remeber when i was a kid going up with the show and i couldn't wait to see cookie monster go crazy about his cookies...u know they take his cookies away but what about the movies..with sex and smoking and drinking and boobies...what happened to taking that stuff off for the kids..i mean come on how many parnets let there kids wach anything they want to make them happy just like the eating problem PARNETS STOP AND GROW THE HELL UP..i am very upset.MY kids will watch the cookie monster on the older tapes i buy for them and not the new one,,,ty!
Replywhy are you doing this the reason why i like you is because you love cookie like me
Replybut if you don't no one will like
you
all my friends thougth that you were werid but i always liked you even when i was little but if you don't eat cookie why should i like you
Mmmm...cookies...
I grew up with Cookie Monster and even still have (packed up somewhere in my attic) a bunch of cookie monster dolls. He was my favorite. Changing him is utterly ridiculous. It's like saying Winnie the Pooh (What the heck is a Pooh anyway?) can't have any more honey. Or did they already do that? Oh bother...
I honestly don't understand how anyone can equate Cookie Monster with childhood obesity when Sesame Street has been on for over 30 years and childhood obesity is a relatively new "epidemic." Maybe if wages were a little more equitable, healthy food was more reasonably priced, parents weren't so overworked and crunched for time, funding for physical education programs wasn't always being reduced, middle school and high school P.E. were more than sitting in the bleachers talking or doing homework, school lunches were a little healthier and, most importantly, parents would feed their children a little better, childhood obesity wouldn't be an epidemic. All it took was a generation of therapists chasing away people's problems with the manta "it's not your fault" to create a culture far too willing to pass the buck. But the bottom line is, Cookie Monster didn't make anyone's kids fat.
I seem to remember seeing plenty of physically active kids and the appearance of healthy foods on Sesame Street as well. Not to mention that adoration of Cookie Monster encouraged lots of children to watch the show, and thus learn. Children don't process things the way adults to. They don't necessarily see cookie monster chowing down on a jar full of cookies and want to do the same. (And if they did, at least they're watching PBS, free of all those horrible food commercials.) I mean, does Bugs Bunny make your kids crave carrots? And even if Cookie Monster gave your kid a jones for some Chips Ahoy, what's wrong with saying no, or even telling the kid he can have one after dinner if he eats his vegetables.
I wouldn't be surprised if the religious conservatives were in on this one. "Cookie Monster is a glutton, and gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins. Cookie Monster is going to lead all our children straight into the burning pits of hell." Mmmm...cookies...
If people are going to have a problem with cookie monster, it really should be with his grammar. "Me want cookie." No THAT is setting a bad example for children...
