Raw Food Diet: Vindicated?
US researchers have concluded that people following a Raw Food Diet are thin - but healthy. The raw food diet has been criticized for causing poor bone health - however the study found that:
although bones were lighter on this diet, turnover rates were normal with no osteoporosis.
Interesting to note that raw food vegetarians "had lower body weights (BMI) and total body fat than the other volunteers". As with any vegetarian or vegan diet - calorie values are generally no match to the average US diet. Following a raw food diet is an even stricter diet - and you would certainly need to know your stuff.

Some articles mentioned that "Vegetarians who don't cook their food have abnormally low bone mass".
The average BMI of the rawfoodist in this study was 20.5, compared to an average of 25 for individuals eating a standard American diet. What does this mean? For a man 5 foot 8 inches tall 20.5 BMI would mean that he is 135 pounds. And if this same man had a BMI of 25, he'd weigh 164.5 pounds.
Below 18.5 -------- Underweight
18.5 – 24.9 -------- Normal
25.0 – 29.9 -------- Overweight
30.0 and Above -------- Obese
According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a BMI of 20.5 is not "abnormally low", it is infact normal. However, what the article failed to mention is that an BMI of 25 is NOT normal.
ReplyThis diet has always made sense to me because if you think back to our ancestors they were created/evolved to live off this planet, so the food that they would have eaten would have been raw. Pasta and all of that processed stuff would never have come into it.
ReplyThen again, we are still evolving so who knows what is good for us now?
the lack of information being floated around is amazing none of the raw food web sites and experts on the net. only one shazzie in the uk mention dha, hemp butter, red palm oil. or omega 3 balance there are only two plants on the planet that have long chain omega 3 efa's. since the raw food moment started it was elimanation of fats. basically starving the brain of vital nutrition. dha represent nearly 30 percent of the brain in all studies show u.s. has lowest consumption of dha in the world, the mid west is half that, vegans are lowest.60% of the photo receptors of the eye are dha. do your bloody research before you jump in then jump way in and change your whole health.
