Oprah, Dr Perricone, and Green Tea
In late 2004, an episode featuring Dr Nigel Perricone aired on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Mr Perricone has written a number of books including the Perricone Prescription, that relate to diet and health (the main premise of his diet is improving skin condition).
Dr Perricone said some interesting things about green tea, which has inspired some aggressive marketing.
Here is the original transcript from the Oprah show:
Oprah: Now I've read in your book that you said if I just replaced coffee with green tea instead, that I could lose 10 pounds in six weeks.Dr. Perricone: Absolutely.
Oprah: Now really. How could that -- what is the big deal about this?
Dr Perricone: Coffee has organic acids that raise your blood sugar, raise insulin. Insulin puts a lock on body fat. When you switch over to green tea, you get your caffeine, you're all set, but you will drop your insulin levels and body fat will fall very rapidly. So 10 pounds in six weeks, I will guarantee it.
Oprah: I'm gonna do that. OK. That is so good! Whoo! That is great.

Perhaps the doctor got a bit over exuberant - guaranteeing anyone's weight loss is a risky thing to do. But what about green tea? There is no doubt that green tea has numerous health properties. You can go search through study after study, and discover the enormous body of evidence indicating green tea's healthful properties.
Green tea and weight loss? It isn't hard to come up with a study or two. One of the most cited articles is this one, that summarizes "Green tea has thermogenic properties and promotes fat oxidation beyond that explained by its caffeine content per se".
As for the coffee there seem to be many contradictions - some raised by this recent study into the affects of caffeine on insulin. The researchers did point out that coffee is a different beast to caffeine - "When you give somebody caffeine without all of the other substances that are in coffee you have a very different situation,".
i am a fan of Dr. Perricone and missed the show on which he was a guest.I am eager to see it and was wondering how i can get access to the episode aired in November 10th.

ReplyIt is all so wonderfull to watch the make overs, looking younger and all the free help that is available - unfortunately living in South Africa as a low income white female, there is no way of getting any of these or even purchasing any of these - financially we are to rich even though we can bearly purchase enough food monthly or paying bils and keeping the kids at schools. All the free offers does not count here - you cannot make use of it.
ReplyWhy does this put me in total depression - being a Tsunami survivor we already had so much suffering and to still deal with this - you can imagine loosing all the money you spend on accomodation and having to return after only a little while, keep in mind it took you about seven years to save for this - and you end up with nothing but heart, anger, lost your faith, love and care for yourself, etc., etc.

HI, I tried the green tea for 6 weeks, but actually gained 5 lbs, my diet never changed, in fact by placebo effect i think i actually ate better knowing that the green tea was supposdly working. Its a hoax, I now know that i can eat pizza and beer if i want to, the key is to jog or workout as well!!! Oh well, green tea does taste good, so now i have green tea and coffee, heh heh

ReplyUnbelievable, I watched Oprah's Show on Nov 10 2004 a few months ago, as I had it saved on my dvr. This green tea theory is a hoax, I've been on it for 3 months and I have not lost any significant weight loss, I've paid neary $63 a month for the 3 months and feel that i was ripped off. Please don't fall for this hoax. The real key is watch what you eat or actually you can eat anything. And to excercise, there's no magic pill, diets don't work, you just starve yourself, you basiclly excercise. I will tell you how I lost 25 lbs in 2 weeks, it's hard work and it's free advise. You get on your best sneakers you head out that door and you run as fast as you can possibly take it and for as long as you can run at the same speed. Then on your way back home fast walk half way to your home and then run really fast till you get to your house and keep doing that every day. ReplyI'm always skeptical of any diet and especially those that talk about insulin levels affecting weight gain or loss.
My son has type 1, so I know how food affects blood sugars and how insulin affects those blood sugars.
The blood sugar of a person without diabetes will never rise above or below a certain level.
With that being said, unless Perricone is gearing his diet toward diabetics, his theory is all bunk.
As it's been said by commenters on this website, it's calories in, calories out no matter what kinds of food you eat.
Complex carbs take more time to digest, so your body is getting a steady stream of energy and it takes longer for your body to feel hungry.
Simple carbs are digested very quickly and used for energy faster, so it takes less time for your body to feel hungry.
This is why you should eat complex carbs. You'll wind up eating less because you will eat less often and with all the fiber, you'll be filled up faster.
Common sense is the best weight loss gimmic. Not Perricone or any other shlock diet out there.
ReplyYou can't count on the health related benefits of Green tea. It has got required enough ingredients to meet our requirements. I never get spun over other beverages. Not at all.
ReplyMost of tea's vitamin C is lost during fermentation, so black and oolong teas have significantly less than green tea.
ReplyI drank green tea everyday for 6 weeks, once a day, and I sure did lose 10 pounds..In fact, i lost 18 and I didn't do a damn thing diffrently..I didn't buy special green tea pills. I just went to the store and bought green tea bags. Thats it. And it worked!!
ReplyI buy green tea bags open several and put them into my coffee brewer's glass container, (I don't believe the paper filters are healthy) let it simmer on my electric range top for about 5 minutes, then use my coffee brewer's mesh filter to strain the tea into a glass pitcher. The trick is to make it very, very, strong this allows you to add lot's of ice and water and you will have tea for days. I have been brewing tea this way for about 3 weeks. I haven't noticed any weight loss. I really don't know about health benefits, I will be going for lab work soon. I actually drink it because it is very refreshing, just add lemon.

ReplyI too switched to green tea after seeing Oprah's show a couple of years ago, and didn't change a thing with my diet. I lost 4.5 kgs, so I believe it!
ReplyI tried Dr. Perrocone's 28 day diet this past year coupled with the recommened green tea and lost 25 pounds. But it was the way the diet made me feel that was the clincher. I was full of enery not only did I see a marked improvement in my skin and wieght but I could concentrate and had lots of drive. I even wrote and published a book on LuLu. com called " Truth or Dare* with my twin sister all before I turned fourty!! While working full time something I would never had the enery to accomplish with out this diet.

I've been drinking coffee for about 20 years now. I add half-n-half and sugar (small amounts) and that just cant be good for anyone. I bought some green tea today and am enjoying it. I have 20 lbs to lose but more than that drinking coffee daily seems to depleat me. We'll see what happens!!!
ReplyI drink green tea for the pick me up. I've been drinking it for about 3 weeks now. I went from a size 12 to a size 10. I think I'll be drinking green tea for the rest of my life. Good bye coffee!

ReplyI am a thin person & am not trying to lose weight, I have recently lost 10 pounds & have been researching to find out if I have some sort of health issue. I recently started drinking green tea every morning in place of coffee. Now I know this change is an actual weight loss diet!
