Europeans More Obese Than Americans

Does the USA have the fattest men? If you believed popular media you would think this was true. You'd be wrong:

In Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Malta and Slovakia, a higher percentage of men are obese or overweight than the estimated 67 percent of men in the United States, according to a report from the International Obesity Task Force, a coalition of researchers and institutions

According to the AP article, obesity is especially acute in Mediterranean countries. And so much for French Women Not Getting Fat:

In France, obesity in women rose from 8 percent in 1997 to 11.3 percent in 2003, and from 8.4 percent to 11.4 percent in men.

These are incredible statistics. It's easy to believe that the US, giving the impression of being the consumer capital of the world, and saturated with fast food outlets would be the fattest. Czech Republic?

There's more to obesity issues than simply blaming fast food or other consumer culture icons.

Haha, I'm French, and I can tell that we indeed have our lot too. On the other hand, we also have known a serious increase in fast-foods here (there probably is at least a McDonald's in every town now... even mine, which is only 12000 inhabitants or so, has its own), and people are eating worse and worse. The good myth of the French people "eating well yet not gaining weight" is crumbling rapidly - unfortunately, we just don't care nor know about to eat properly anymore, nor how to moderate it. And probably a similar phenomenon is occuring in other european countries nowadays.

Still the french are still skinnier than us. Oh so they hit 11.4 percent. It's still along way away from us. I'm sorry, I still feel the reasons why we Americans are getting fatter is strictly because of fast food and horriable portion control. I passed a fast food place yesturday, they are selling a burger now that is a whole pound of meat! Come on. Who needs a whole pound of hamburger in they're tummies.

Yes, American women might be obese, but its an all too common problem in society worldwide. Essentially, its our providers. Our size and weight all depend on control and portion size of what we eat. Diets and starvation aren't necessary at all costs, but an easy way to monitor what you eat and control your size is to look at your plate. If you have multiple colors on your plate from more than atleast 2 food groups, you're on the right track.

i think that there shoud be more in depth and specific statistics. I am writing a paper comparing the obesity rates among american adults and french adults. IT would be helpful

"In Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Greece, Malta and Slovakia, a higher percentage of men are obese or overweight than the estimated 67 percent of men in the United States" and "In France, obesity in women rose from 8 percent in 1997 to 11.3 percent in 2003, and from 8.4 percent to 11.4 percent in men." Boy, these French men are really in danger from obesity. They have climbed to one-sixth the rate of obesity of us American men on that dimension!

I took a trip to Mexico about two years ago during the "high" season for European tourists who flock to see the pyramids. Wow, I was so suprised to see how large Europeans have become! I could really see a difference from the Europe a travelled ten years ago.

In fact, you could point out many Americans (but not all) becuase of out gym-toned bodies. From what I have heard, gyms are not as popular in Europe
