Diet Demographics: Where Do You Fit?
Web statistics company HitWise has some interesting results from it's Internet research (based on traffic at the beginning of 2005:
* Visitors to www.weightwatchers.com and www.ediets.com were both highly represented in the "Up and Comers" social group, which consists of young, middle class residents of small cities.
* Conversely, visitors to www.atkins.com were more likely to be blue collar residents of small cities and towns.
* Those who visit www.southbeachdiet.com were often from the wealthier social groups, such as "Young Digerati," characterized as affluent tech-savvy singles and couples living in fashionable urban areas.
* Visitors to www.weightloss4idiots.com were often from rural social groups, such as "Crossroads Villagers" and "Shotguns & Pickups", described as lower to middle class singles and families in rural areas.
What is astonishing in the stats is that the obscure WeightLoss4Idiots website ranked ahead of Atkins.com and JennyCraig.com in sheer traffic volume. That's incredible given the heavy volume of television advertising undertaken by Jenny Craig.
The South Beach Diet apparently appeals to the "Young Digerati". Is this purely because it's reputation for more 'gourmet' recipes and expensive foods? Or just clever branding from publishers Rodale?

I would've thought jennycraig and atkins had tons more traffic than weightloss4idiots
