Acomplia: Miracle Diet Pill?
The experimental weight loss drug (acomplia) has now completed it's second trial:
The drug, rimonabant, which the French company Sanofi-Aventis hopes to sell under the brand name Acomplia, trimmed nearly 16 pounds on average from people taking the optimal dose for two years, compared with 5.5 pounds for those who took dummy pills, doctors reported Tuesday at a cardiology conference.
The drug works differently to most other weight loss drugs:
Acomplia works in an entirely different way, by blocking a "pleasure center" in the brain, leading people to eat less and acting directly on fat cells to prevent weight gain. Company studies suggest it also might help people quit smoking.However it appears Acomplia will suffer from the same scourge as virtually every other drug - adverse side effects.
RedHerring notes that "...as many as a fifth of the patients in the trial of 'Acomplia' dropped out because of adverse side effects." There seems to be no more detail than this. Can it be as bad as Xenical's "anal leakage"...? (See a true story of Acomplia side effects here).
UPDATE: Acomplia will not be approved for sale until at least 2006. It is NOT currently available by prescription.
UPDATE (March 2006): FDA approval has been delayed until the second half of 2006.

I haven't done much research on Accomplia, but I sure wish like hell they'd bring back Cal-Ban 3000!!! In 1989 I lost 40 pounds in 5 weeks and did not starve, get cranky or have a heart attack. I think the FDA took it off the market because it truly worked!! I'm looking for the herbal ingredients so that I can come with a prototype for Cal-Ban 3000.

ReplyBeth, I don't know what meds you are on or how your thyroid levels are, but I'll leave it at the fact that most doctors treating thyroid problems are not treating it correctly. There is excellent patient info at http://thyroid.about.com on the test you should be getting and on all the possible drugs and treatments, even alternative medicine ones, to get your hormone levels back to healthy levels, not just to "is not going to have a coma" levels, which is what most doctors aim for.
ReplyI have been on acomplia for almost 3 months. I have lost 2 and a half stone, that's the good news! The bad news? I had to come off them due to the most painful headaches and irregular heart beat and genrally feeling ill.
ReplyI was a compulsive eater and this pill worked for me, I am having to go it alone now but I don't fear that. Doing this with out meds is always the best way

Replythe side effect they're referring to is depression. it is approved in europe and you can buy it in canada. thing is you need a prescription for it. the reason the fda denied it in the u.s. is because of the depression side effect. it's all political as that's not much of a good reason as many other drugs produce the same adverse effect.

ReplyYou can get Acomplia from JanDrugs.com ... but you need a PRESCRIPTION. My doctor gave me one, and I put an order it. Took about 10 days and it came. I just started it today. Am trying to be hopeful, but am skeptical.

ReplyI have been on phentermine and lost a little weight, but my doctor said that Rimonabant is coming soon and wants me to start taking it. He told me that it should be on the market in the USA by July 07. Has anyone out there started taking it? I know that it can be order on line, but do not know how much it is going to be. Has anyone ordered it, where and how much. It is really bad that low fat food is so much higher than regular. And of course normal people can not afford all this high price stuff.

I'll tell you why Cal-Ban 3000 was taken off the market, it killed my father-in-law. Please, please be careful when taking diet pills. They are very dangerous.

ReplyI was taking phentertmine for a while and it had good results combined with working out.. but my doc told me I have to stop taking it because of the side effects. then I tried acomplia. it works fine. i am losing a few pounds weekly. this is a good site for acomplia info effectivedietpill.info Just people with previous depression and anxiety problems should avoid acomplia because it can have some mental side effects for them

ReplyI found Acomplia (rimonabant) on an international website called 4rx.com - it is very expensive, but this online site offers the best prices I've found...be warned, it takes about 2-3 weeks for delivery & does not come with information/warnings, etc. - so you must do your research and talk it over with your doctor to be informed before buying it.
