6 Year Old Girls: Unhappy With Their Body
If we needed proof of our body-obsessed culture - here it is. 80 girls between ages 5 and 8 were interviewed by a university research team:
The British Journal of Developmental Psychology study found 47% wanted to be slimmer, and most thought that would make them more popular.
These are children as young as six wanting to be thin.
"...clear evidence has accumulated that a substantial number of pre-adolescent girls are dissatisfied with their bodies and wish to be thinner."The article points out that 5 year olds exhibit little dissatisfaction with their bodies. The obvious factor here is peer pressure beginning at school.
Can this be all? What about the over-reported 'obesity epidemic'? Does the fear-inducing reporting of our size send the wrong message to our young? What about popular media (TV, magazines, music videos, etc.)? By age 6 are our daughters already so saturated with the stuff that they feel fat?

That's sick already poor little girls are being influenced..parents should try to tell them and make it clear to them they do NOT need to worry about that stuff..i mean they are six yr olds !!!!!!!
Replyi think that you little gurlz are crazy you are only 6 you guys don't even have a job so what are you worring about you crazy little gurlz and boyz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyWhy can't kids just be kids? They should play and enjoy their lives, not worry about what they look like in the mirror. Mom's - love, praise and encouragement go a very long way.
ReplyIts really disturbing to hear that girls as young as 6 are startying to worry about there weight? and that theyll be fat? do 6 year olds even have fat?? Im doing a research project on Body Image and this website was so helpful, Im learning so much. Its amazing what the media is doing to girls as young as 6. something needs to be done!!!
Reply6 year olds probably see or have older girls wanting to lose weight so they are influenced by that. But that is still wrong!
ReplyI think a lot of it is media exposure at too young of an age. My parents did not let me watch anything but Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, etc. until I was probably like 5 or 6. I mean, kindergarteners don't NEED to see MTV videos or any shows like that. I didn't get to watch MTV until I was in 5th or 6th grade because my parents didn't want it to influence me in the wrong ways. I never thought twice about my body until I got into middle school. And that's how it should be...little girls don't need to worry about being skinny. Let them enjoy life, enjoy eating (hello, they're growing, they NEED to eat) and worry about being fat later.
ReplyTrue Story:
ReplyAt the age of three, I wanted to be a dancer, like most little girls do. My Nana fully supported me, but she told me that if I wanted to be a ballerina, I'd have to stay skinny. From then to the time I was twelve, I had a subconcious fear of becoming fat. I was almost anorexic. Thankfully, my Mom forced me to eat some food, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I am only now gaining back that weight I never had. Sixteen, 5'6, 115 lbs and still working on it.
I understand this is having a huge impact on our society, all we ever see now it how skinny so and so is and how to loose weight like 500 different ways on every magazine and television show in sight. I mean ever since i was in 4th grade i absolutely hated my body, and i been throwing up every once in a while ever since. But it wasn't until last year this one girl called me fat all the time to my face!..that i acually did something about it i went under major pressure and depression to loose weight by both starving and anytime i just a little something i would regurgitate it. I was 122 at 5'1 to 93lbs in a matter of 2 mounths. It was horrible i was never happy i always felt nervous about eating especially since it seemed like everyone was watching me, (how did they find out about my eating disorder? my sister told them!)...it was horrible my own flesh and blood spreading such a horrible thing around to everyone..i was completely devastated...but then my best friend's mom was starting to get suspicious too..she would always ask how much i weigh and i would lie and say like 110 and she would be like no you dont dont lie to me, i can see every bone in your back! And my best friend would threaten to tell my mom to send me to rehab because the last thing she wanted was for me to get so bad i would end up in the hospital with major problems.. So gradually over 4 mounths i got better and better and the madness finally stopped and i love my body now, despite i only weigh 98 lbs. but thats ok with me because i work out 3 hours a day and eat a lot of fresh fruits and vegtables and take a daily vitamin...so atleast now i am happier inside and out! And no one should waste their time worrying about their weight in unhealthy ways...just stop being lazzy and work out for atleast 30 minutes a day and make healthy eating choices!
Replyi think that you little gurlz are crazy you are only 6 you guys don't even have a job so what are you worring about you crazy
ReplyMy daughter is 5 1/2 will be 6 in May, 2006. She weights 75lbs. and is 4ft. 3inches. Should I be worried about her weight?
ReplyI am only 13years old and i way over 300 pounds how can I lose this weight?
ReplyKrishna, you need to see a doctor to have a checkup before starting any diet and exercise program.
ReplyThis is a message for Sue. Beware of the image you are putting out there to your daughter. Trust me, I know. I am a 33 year old mother of 4 who in my early 20's had an eating dissorder based on comments I received. People come in all shapes and sizes and everyones "Perfect" person is different. I have 2 year old twins, a 5 1/2 year old and a 6 1/2 year old. They are all different weights and sizes, but to me, they are perfect. After all they are only children and will grow alot more. The important thing for you is to teach them good eating habits, exercise and to have self-confidence in themselves. I am concerned that you are concerned about her weight. Please don't let her feel she has dissapointed you. She is only 6 years old remember.
ReplyThis is sad. End of story.

Replywould you worry if your 6th grade niece weights themself everyday.... was chubby...now thin..due to practicing andexercising for cheer tryouts
ReplyOnce I read about a 6 year old girl who went on diet(in doctor control} because her friends at nursery shool made fun of her for she was fat.According to newspaper, she was the youngest person who went on diet,as far as I remember
ReplyHmm i think that this is crazy. Im 13 and am 108 pounds and 5'4. I havent started to worry about my weight untill Middle School. I know im thin. Its just really hard to believe it when i turn on MTV.
Replyhey sue, my daughter is 6 yrs old, and weighs in at 80lbs, other children will call her fat, and it makes her cry. i have reinforced the body beautiful, as in, some women are skinny, some are chunky, and its all good until it interferes with your health. many of the people on my dads side are in the 300lb range. they have problems with diabedes, high blood pressure, bed sores, uterine problems from pressure, trouble walking, ect, all ascerbated by their weight. they are the first to vociferously and aggressively maintain that their weight is not a problem, even after some of them have had their doctors actually reccommend stomach stapeling. with my daughter taking after their body types, i maintain a healthy eating lifestyle, and, watch all of our weight, for health reasons, that way, my daughter knows that she is healthy, and, beautiful no matter what some cruel children say. its helped her self image, given her an advanced sense of healthy lifestyle, and given me peace of mind that she will not succumb involentarily to morbund obesity, but, rather a good healthy farm girl weight.
Replymy daughter is 8 and weighs 100 pounds and will not let up im worried
ReplyWerka, if you are worried, take her to a doctor.
ReplyI'm 13 now and weigh 108 at 5 foot 3. I think i'm fat sometimes or most of the time. When i was twelve, 5 foot 2, and 98 pounds i started thinking i was fat. i starved myself at my Dads place for three weeks and only lost 5 pounds. Then when i got home at my Mom', place I dropped down to 80 pounds. My family was really worried. Then i would get teased by some of my family members for being to skinny. I would cry and cry, then start barfing. My Mom had caught me and thats when i got help. I love my Mom. She's over weight but, she saved me because if she wasnt there for me i would probably be at the hospital. The doctor and my Mom thought it might have been because of my parents splitting. I didnt want to tell the truth. Do you people think 108 pounds, 5 foot 3, and 13 is fat?
ReplyKay, not only your weight is not fat, but it is at the very low end of normal.
I think that when you start developing and changing from a child's body into a woman's body, it is normal to feel fat, regardless of your weight. Cause suddenly, you have curves in places where before there were straight lines, and you don't feel like yourself anymore. But you are not fat at all, you are just developing and becoming a woman.
ReplyProper Diet and excersize! =)
ReplyF*** you LuLu. She's a good size. Maybe that's why the world most people are starving themselves to death because your telling them they should lose weight and when they lose weight they are way thinner. Kayla is perfect don't you other readers agree?
ReplyI think Kayla can even safely stand to GAIN some weight. However, proper diet and exercise are good advice for everyone, not just for people looking to lose weight. Not eating junk and moving are necessary for good health.
ReplyThankyou

And kayla, hunnie your not fat at all!, don't let anyone tell you that you are and if they do say "F*** you"
ReplyI'm 13 and Ineed diete tips I am 108.5 pounds
ReplyKayla, unless you are shorter than 4'5", 108.5lb is not fat, and no, you do not need diet tips. You are fine the way you are.
Replythats kinda of sad that those little girls are worrying about weight allready...i never thought about it till i was bout 12-ish...right now i am 5'4" and 140-ish pounds...i know i am fat and i am trying to excersise and diet...
ReplyI would just like to ask somebody..
Replyi am about 5 foot tall
i weigh about 7 stone ?!
i dont know if that it how big i should be or not :S
ohh and im 13 years old :)
7 stone = 98 pounds. You are at the low end of normal. You do NOT need to lose any weight.
ReplyChicken Girl said it right. You are very skinny, you'll probably fill up a bit as you grow older, but even if you GAIN 20lb your weight will still be normal.
ReplyThese comments are stupid. The subject changed from venting about media exposure to 13 year olds asking if they're fat at X'X" and --- pounds. Sickening.
