LA Weight Loss Exposed
LA Weight Loss are a center-based weight loss program. The potential client comes in for their free assessment, gets weighed, and has a program provided for them. Motives behind LA Weight Loss have been questioned after the company was fined $100,000 (in 2002) for using false claims.
LA Weight Loss Clinics
LA Weight Loss have a number of clinics worldwide. Many feel that it is an expensive program - particularly if finance options are chosen (rather than cash). The diet plan is customized to include appropriate portions of Proteins, Vegetables, Fruits, Starches, Fats, Dairy and LA Lites. LA Lites are soy-protein bars - which form a central part of the program. When purchased in bulk the cost of the bars is not insignificant.
LA at Home

The LA at Home program consists of a Starter Kit - that is delivered to your door. Once the starter kit has been received - the program can begin.
The Program Diary forms the central part of LA at Home. This on-line diary allows all meals and beverages to be recorded, along with weight tracking, exercise log, and thoughts and feelings about the days eating. The site also allows access to a recipe section, and the ability to join a support group by way of on-line forums.
NOTE: It appears the LA at Home program is no longer operational (Nov 2007).
The cost of $219 includes customized meal programs, 4 weeks of LA Nutritional Bars, and samples of best-selling products.
UPDATE: Many commenters have suggested sourcing the LA Lites at discount from eBay.

Just one other quick question in respone to Rebecca, when you join a gym and don't use the membership, or don't loose weight do you ask them for a refund? Do they give it to you? They don't I tried once because I had to move, I had to continue paying my monthly fee till my year expired then I had to go to the gym cancel my membership and prove to them that I had moved out of state. It was a golds gym they have them everywhere but it was nontransferable as well.
You signed up You paid the money no one forced you. if you can't use the product do what i tell my children "USE YOUR WORDS" Last time i checked are clients can talk.
ReplyHi Everyone out there...
I have run out of weightloss weeks and was wondering if there is anyone out there who was in a similar situation? What can be done? Do you have to buy more weeks or is there a way I can first use up the other weeks i have paid for....
Thanks!

ReplyI'm not going to get into an agrument with you. I have more important things to do. I did tell them. The first thing out of lmy mouth was I can't do the poducts. If I do I will end up in the hospital. They said I didn't have to. It was after I signed the contract that they told me in order to get my rebate back I had to drink two lites a day. That is fraud. No one twisted my arm. I joined in good faith on what they told me. I have joined gyms and other weight loss programs and didn't go and didn't ask for a refund. This is not about the refund. This is about the integrity of the company. They lied more than once. That voids a contract. It's the principle. I don't blame anyone for my being overweight. I grew up in the country and I love to eat. I had actually lost 85 pounds before I even went to LA. I wanted to try something new. Even after I told them that I was allergic to the products, they would call me and try to sell them to me. If they had read my chart they could have saved themselves some time. And as someone on here said we would fat people would get up off our duffs and do something...... Well, I don't sit on my duff. I do volunteer work. I work for hospice, several hospitals, and others. When you think about holding little crack babies in your arms while they shiver and shake or sit with someone for months while they are dying, other things just become so much less important. I want to keep doing this so I want to be healthy. I don't care what you or anyone else thinks about me. I only have to answer to my higher power and myself. I know who I am and I love who I am. I'm older and I have lived a long time, and through a lot of adversity. Even though I think this company wronged me, I have sent them a letter thanking them for changing their poloicy, letting people know up front that they have to buy the products and for refunding my money. Like I said before if anyone thinks they were cheated fight for your rights. Good Luck!
One more thing. For those of you who are trying to get your money back go through the customer service contact email address. That is what I did. I also told the associates in the local office. You can also get their address on the LA site. They are in Horsham, PA. The person who called me about my refund was very nice. She asked me if there was anything they could do to keep me. If it had been a misunderstanding on my part I would have stayed for that reason.
ReplyAnnie,
you may be one of the honest centers out there, and i'm not complaining because i am pretty successful on lawl. good for you for disclosing the cost of lites to your clients before the second visit and it's great that you do not pressure your clients to buy things. i know at the center i go to, i definitely was tricked into thinking that it was only going to cost me around $500. i wish that my consultation was with someone like you!!
some counselors are good and some are money hungry, but if the plan works just stick with it or do it at home on your own once you know how to do it. i just bought the cookbook today and i can't wait to try that! so many new ideas!
ReplyTo Rebecca:
I guess it really depends on the center you go to because the whole company is not that way, our center has integrity and it is too bad that our some centers that give the company as a whole a bad name, because it is really a decent company. I think that the center you went to was in the total wrong. I always make sure the client is eligible for product before I sell it to them. We never even offer clients the La Lites if they are inelgible for them. I would never want to get in a fight, but I do feel like everyone on here is bashing the program when in reality it is just healthy eating and portion control, no mystery there. I do believe in the products, I am inelgible to use the Lites so it can be done with out them. and also your refund is not voided if you are inelgible for the la lites. We have many clients that can't use them that still get there rebate. It is too bad that you had a bad experience.
To KK: I know at my la weight loss if you are out of weight loss weeks and you have not followed the contract, they are $10 a week. We don't allow people to use maintence or stabilization towards weight loss. If you are close to your goal they should carry you till you reach your goal. I know that is what we do as long as the client follows the contract. Ask your counselor they might have specials.
ReplyTo Jenn: the cookbook is probably the best money you can spend there. I have it and use it all the time. there are some great recipes, try the meatball sandwich, spicy chicken wing salad, the baked flounder, I could go on for awhile. I have on client that we always talk about which recipes are the best in the cookbook, and those three are our favorites.
Thanks a lot Annie! I'll find out from my center what their policy on this is.
Replyhas anyone tried supplementing Luna or Pria bars for the LA Lites? They are very similar in ingredients.
ReplyMeaghan, an answer to your question, as to are there any other bars that you can purchase from the grocery stores; LUNA BARS. Actually I am a former member of the LA Program - lost 42lbs and have kept it off for 5 yrs, I became good friends with one of the Center's Director and I asked her to please give me a bar that I can purchase that is equivalent to LA lites and she informed me Luna Bars.
ReplyKK:
Replyanswer to your question, being a member for 5 yrs - on my first initial plan, I used up my weight loss weeks also, but was advised that I could cut into my maintenance weeks. And was given the option if I wanted more maintenance weeks, I could purchase same.
Mary-
ReplyThank you so much for the info regarding the Luna Bars. I have lost 20 lbs since December 2006 and I find the diet fairly easy to follow, I just have a hard time paying 16.00 per box for the LA Lites. Keep up all the good work everybody! (swimsuit season is just around the corner!)
Annie: thank you for the tip! i'm going to try the chicken avocado pita tonite though, i am craving avocado ever since i saw it in the recipe book!
ReplyMy coworkers are on the plan as well as me and they use Luna Bars and Kashi Bars once a day and an La Lite bar for the other one. Costco has a good deal on Kashi and Luna Bars.
ReplyI,ve been on La Weight loss for 7 weeks and lost 11lbs. I did this over the christmas period aswell, so I'm sure it could have been more. Yes it seems expensive when you have to pay up front but if you work it out over the entire period (in my case that will be 18months. That works out to be approx $12 Australian per week. I buy the bars because i like them and I buy them per box. I can fit into my old clothes and feel great about myself. At the end of the day that's what matters to me. Like any diet you will loose weight and if you go back to you're old eating habits that made you fat in the first place, well I say no more. Q. Work out how much it costs to buy someone elses pre made food? probably just as expensive.
ReplyWELL I JOINED LA WEIGHTLOSS SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I TOO WAS TIED INTO THE TRAP OF EXTRA COSTS. I WANTED TO LOSE 50 LBS SO I INSISTED THAT I WOULD PAY ANYTHING TO GET THE WEIGHT OFF SO I DID THE PROGRAM. IT WORKED!!!! IT IS THE ONLY PLAN THAT HAS WORKED FOR ME. I EVEN TRIED THE 6 WEEK BODY MAKEOVER CRAP THAT DIDN'T HELP. AND IT COST JUST AS MUCH TO JOIN. WELL I HAVE HAD A FEW RELAPSES WHERE I HAVE GAINED THE WEIGHT BACK. SINCE I STILL HAVE THE PLAN, I HAVE GOTTEN EXTRA WEIGHT OFF SEVERAL TIMES. (I LIKE SWEETS AND FAST FOOD, SO IT WASN'T THE PLAN THAT MADE ME GAIN WEIGHT AGAIN) IF YOU ASK ME, I THINK THE MONEY IS WORTH IT, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE A HARD TIME LOOSING WEIGHT. WHEN I DO THE PLAN NOW, I USE SLIMFAST BARS, KELLOGGS PROTIEN BARS, ZONE BARS ETC. THAT YOU CAN BUY IN THE STORE, THAT HAVE ALMOST THE SAME INGREDIENTS AND SAME AMOUNT OF CALORIES AND VITAMINS, AND INSTEAD OF THE ORANGE DRINK, I EAT A COUPLE OF ORANGES A DAY. IT WORKS FINE, LAST SUMMER I LOST 35 EXTRA POUNDS, WALKING EVERYDAY AND DOING THE PLAN, AND NOW I AM A PROFESSIONAL CHEERLEADER, AND HAVE A SLIM MIDRIF IN MY UNIFORM!!! FOR ME LA WAS A GREAT THING.
ReplyHi, this message is for Allison who works at LAWL.
Allison, I just recently interviewed for a position with LAWL as an assistant manager and I was wondering if I could get your opinion on how it is to work for LAWL. Do you enjoy it, how is the environment, would you encourage someone to work there, how is the compensation? I was quoted an estimate but not given any details. This is a concern because I have to make so much to live. If you could offer any advice I would appreciate it. Thank You.
ReplyCharlei,
i think ever center is different. I am fortuante enough to work at a center where my general manager is awesome and so is my assistant and all the other girls that work there. I am just a counselor so my compensation is a little different. When we make goal we make 5% comission and when we don't we only get 3%. The base pay is low but i believe it is different everywhere. My friend is an assistant manager and she makes a percentage off of what the center makes, i am not sure how much it is. but i know every center is different. but she makes good money as an assistant manager.
on commission it really depends on how much your center averages and how much you sell including programs and floor dollar. at my center we are not all about sales we are customer service first so depending on where you applied it could be different. Good luck and I hope I answered some of your questions.
ReplyWell I just did my four week weigh in and measure today. I am down 9lbs and 8 1/2 inches and I feel great. I wish everyone on here would stop crying about the cost. If you want to lose the weight then do it otherwise shut up! I don't eat the Bars cause they make me throw up not too sure why. They changed my plan for me and it is working fine. My counselers are great and I ALWAYS get smiles even if my weight isn't great, example I went in two days ago and was up a pound no biggie most people go up and down a little on ANY diet. the counseler just tried to see what i was eating and said there was nothing wrong, if it did the same next time we would look further into it. I am treated the same as if i was buying the bars. I don't buy anything there and they are fine with it.
I would like to know however if anyone has bought the cook book and how that is??? My hubby is getting a little tiered of steak (never thought that would happen lol).
I feel great and are looking forward to fitting into all my small clothes soon i only have 21 more weeks woot woot. I have NO COMPLAINTS about LAWL what so ever!!!!!!
If you wanna get it off then do this plan!!! It is alot of money but what is more important?? I wanna be able to play with my three little kids and be able to keep up.
For ALL of you doing the plan good job keep up the good work. For those of you who have done the plan I am proud of you. For all you complaining get a life.
Is there anyone from Manitoba here???
ReplyI'm from Ontario Canada. I joined LA after thinking that committing for a whole year would help me maintain my weight loss. I don't usually have a problem losing weight, but I have been struggling with gaining the same 15 or 20 pounds and then having to take it off again. I lost 55 lbs at Weight Watchers and have kept most of it off and tried another weight loss clinic and was successful. I told them upfront I would not buy the lites. Since Nov 1 I have lost only 6.6lbs! I do not find most of the "counselors" to know the answer to questions I have. The Assistant Manager is the only one I think is any good. I have no confidence in the program. Last week I emailed a complaint, received no response after 3 days then emailed again, and along with my concerns cut and pasted some complaints from other people. I finally received a response saying they would get back to me no later than the end of the week. No response! Not only do I think the program and counsellors are not any good, BUT their customer service techniques are the worst I have ever experienced. The person who emailed me had a phone number attached and I will be phoning tomorrow. If I do not get the refund I requested I will have to continue at the centre but I will follow my own program and will not write anything down. I am amazed at how awful this organization is and what a scam!
ReplyI really do not mean to be a bitch, but La Weight Loss and Weight Watchers are almost the same thing. They are all calorie based. So you did better on weight watchers, why didn't you go back to that? saying the counselors are not smart or do not know what they are doing is a personal insult to me as i am a counselor and i know if you follow the plan, even without the lites it works because in three weeks i have lost 6.4 pounds with some deviations. i did weight watchers and did not have this kind of success so to each is own. but this is what i ask my clients who say it does not work, so portion control, and eating healty are wrong? that doesn't work? you have got to be kidding me, i see peoples diaries and they are like "I can't believe I gained" and i ask them what happened over the weekend and the truth comes out, YOU CONTROL YOUR OWN DESTINY. weight loss or not. don't blame you not being successful on someone else.
ReplyI do not lie about what I eat. The counselors there know exactly when I have been off program. I went to an all-inclusive and gained 3.6, got right back on program and gained 1.4 over Christmas and got right back on program. I don't know why it's not working for me. But aside from it not working I am extremely unhappy with the service. I am not slamming the counselors; I am telling you my experience. I ask two or three of them the same question and get completely different instructions. I was told not to eat yogourt and cottage cheese the same day. When I asked why they said because of the fat content. THEY ARE FAT FREE. When I told her that the reply I got was "oh". I just called LA and was told no refund, so I then told the contact my issue regarding the counselors and the centre. I did not want to slam anyone or make anyone get in trouble with their jobs but now it is ME I'm fighting for. I have absolutely no confidence in them or the program so how can I be successful. Of course people are successful. I have a friend who has gone to LA and lost (is stuck now), but never lost on WW. People are different is the only thing I can say.
ReplyDianna - i bought the cookbook last week bc it was on sale and i have been eyeing it every time i go in there because i was really sick of eating the same things every day. it's pretty decent. there's lots of ideas i wouldn't have thought to try out, mainly because i didn't want to be bothered with figuring out what everything counts for. i have tried only one recipe so far, but i have post its all over the book on ones that i want to try. my goal is to try something new a few times a week and its definitely going to help. i usually run into problems at dinner time and this has plenty of ideas.
also, there are dessert ideas and ideas for drinks (which is good bc i don't drink anymore bc of lawl!) and ideas for party foods (finger foods and dips-good for superbowl!)
good luck!!
ReplyWhen I joined in July I told them that I was on anti depressants and they said that it would be no problem losing weight. When I didn't lose weight after the first month , they said it was because I was on anti depressants.
ReplyI was never told the bars were not manditory, and was charged over 1000.00.
These bars are packed with sugar. My girlfriend followed Dr. Oz's diet of NO SUGAR or white flour and lost twice as much weight for free. I lost the
weight doing my own plan and working out everyday. Their shakes are also loaded with Sugar. Two people in the center I am in have left and told me horrible things about LA weight loss before they left. Save yourself lots of money... exercise and eat healthy...
I have recently joined LA weightloss and I have absolutely no intention of buying their bars or extras. And after further reading and examining of the contract it states, I only have to consume the LA Lites as directed, not purchase them from them. I also am aware that if they try to say I cannot buy them from anyone else, at the bottom it only states that written material cannot be shared. Not products. It has only been 4 days for me, but I am feeling pretty good about the eating plan they have given me. But I guess I will see.
Replywell the lack of ethics...is overwhelming..i can't believe that anybody would bully on these poor people..
Replyit is a 911 call they say... thanks the lord is nor for real or all those calling would die... absolutely disgusting...shame on you la weight loss
to Charlie... don't even go there girlfriend... $9 or 10 an hour and then you need to take more trainning to be a consultation girl... well there is people waiting for 2 years for these "priviledge" i am a client and my favorite counselor..,. which by the way is just a sales person trying to make a living is starving on the promise of the "la weight loss dream" bull... pure bull... get a good job with a company who respectes their employees... good luck to you Charlie and God bless
ReplyI have joined in Deerfield IL and I'm very pleased with the women who work there and the way I've been treated. The contract was completely explained to me including the fact I had to buy the bars. I chose not to buy a years worth up front but did purchase the bars at a discount for 1 month at a time. The bars are delicioius and I'm totally them. I think that for what its worth LAWL is worth trying. I've been on WW for over 2 years and its totally different way of life. But its common sense. For everyone that is complaining how expensive it is.. well think about how much money it cost to put the weight on. Its obviously not coming off cheap or you wouldnt even be considering it. Just ask questions of the center and hopefully if they are honest they will give you what you need.
ReplyCan someone please supply me with a telephone number for LA weight Loss at home, I joined 1 week ago, I received about 90 candy bars (assorted boxes) in the mail. I never consume that much sugar. I'm hungry more now than I was and I can not get any answers from anyone online. I sent messages after messages and no responses. So I cancelled. I'm just out of $200.00. I just do not want them to take another penny off of my credit card. I cancelled via online, but I'd like to speak to a human to get a confirmation of my cancellation. they never even supplied me with a telephone number for support. This is the LA at Home Program I need the telephone number for, I think its a different number than the LA weight loss center
ReplyThanks
Has anybody had trouble getting the center to honor the guarantee? I am in the 19th week and have lost a little over 5 pounds. I was not losing anything and they did (finally)move me to a different plan and I started to lose. I also have stopped using the bars and started using the juice. After really reading the nutritional informaion I am convinced the bars are partially to blame for my not losing weight.
ReplyMy problem is tha when I asked about getting my free weeks if I follow the plan and do not lose I am getting some pretty shady answers. Things like in week four I ate some cookie dough, and last week I went out and ate lasagna (I have had Italian once in 19 weeks). I have been told this is evidence that I am not following the counseling and therfore have voided my guarantee. I am told I am being negative and not trying hard enough. I went off on one of their sales clerks today and pointed out that I have cheated a few times (I am sure most people do) and I have been honest about it (which is why it is in my chart to be used against me). But overall I have followed the plan.
I have been assured that the guarantee will be honored and I will be able to keep coming until I lose the weight. But a wanrig to all clients. Watch what they are writing. In reading my chart (I grabbed it when the "couselor left the room"). I have found many of the comments to be rude and in some cases false. I have begun watching what they write down to make sure everything gets in there.
I am going to see the Dietician in my doctors office and I am dying to know what she thinks of this plan. I have sunk a ton of money into this progam and I WILL NOT leave until I lose all the weight or get a refund!! I am just hoping they honor the contract.
To Anita Fraser... good luck i have been here forever... and itended to stay.. not for lossing weight which by the way i never did... but for informing you guys about the shameful ways of this la weight loss...
Replynever got the weight down.. never got a rebate...never got real COUSELING..
like you i have found out not "errors" but lies on my chart...
be ware... the really pushy time is coming...
legal mambo yambo and threats...coming your way
protect yourself
On a previous statement someone had asked about the Luna Bars ~ where can you find them & does anyone know if they are compatable with the la lites? Any insight ~ greatly appreciated!!!
ReplySorry ~ never mind on my last post ~ I skipped over some of the entires & can see my question had already been asked. Thanks :)
ReplySomeone needs to start a class action suit in California. I went off the bars and lost 4 pounds.
ReplyTo Anita and everyone else. I have been on it since November 1 and have lost 6 lbs. I too was honest about "cheating" as I thought that made sense - no one is perfect. I in fact said to a friend today the biggest mistake I made was being honest. I should have lied through my teeth. I have been trying to get a refund and am getting nowhere. It is also abolutely impossible to reach anyone by phone. This company is a scam. Naturally they are out to make a profit, but their customer service is non-existent. I'm from Ontario Canada and I can't believe the number of negative sites there are regarding LA. If anyone is able to get a refund or can get to an actual person would you mind sharing that? I have pretty much given up. I am actually shocked at the treatment. I don't think I've ever experienced anything as bad as this in terms of customer relations - weight loss aside!
ReplyI haven't had a chance to read all of the comments, but I have a close friend who managed an LA Weight Loss until her conscience could no longer let her.
Her training was intense, and she was told to have people borrow money (there, on the spot, in the store) from friends and family. Her territory supervisor instructed her to ignore health ineligibilities and bring in the $.
Anecodotal evidence aside, it seems like just another crock designed to prey on the insecurities of women. Yuck. I'd rather be fat.
ReplyI am going on my 6th month on the diet from LA weight Loss and lost 72 lbs From 190 to 118 and I feel great yes it is expensive, but it is worth it, it teaches you how to eat and the right foods to eat. You have the option not to choose the bars or any other foods they have. I did this without using any of their foods ( snacks, bars etc.) I look like a total different person and feel great too. Thanks to La Weight Loss. Believe me I have tried it all. And this is the best I have done. If you are considering LA Weight Loss think it over, You have to make a real agjustment and be ready to do it, I did it and no cheating at all. Enjoy it, this is the best program I have been on.
ReplyIt worked for me too. I lost 72 lbs in 6 months and I feel great
ReplyCongratulations to all of you who have lost on this program. My girlfriend has lost 35 lbs, although is now stuck. She is the reason I joined, but so far I have been so unhappy with the entire experience. I was very successful on Weight Watchers and maintained most of a 55 lb weight loss; however, because I reached lifetime there wasn't enough accountability for me to go back there. How said that I need that but I'm weak!! I think the LA program looks good, but all that aside, I was not successful on it and I had very bad experiences at the centre with conflicting information from the staff, and them not being able to answer questions I had. That is what my biggest complaint is.
