Weight Loss: Not Just Diet and Exercise
It's so easy to prescribe diet and exercise as the panacea for weight problems. "Eat right and exercise". It is the simple answer... but then it's also just a piece of a larger puzzle.
To many people food is more than just fuel for the body. Food can be a comforter - something to dull the pain or the hurt. Or maybe something to relieve the boredom or loneliness.
Trying another diet plan is exactly that - "trying". Behaviourism or "try-harder" rarely succeed in freeing us from our source of pain. Maybe it could help to get to the roots of our relationship with food. Once we identify the source of our pain, and get the insights to deal with it - we need no longer use food as the antidote. Perhaps then diet plans and exercise could be used - not as another method to try - but as a means of understanding what is needed in our everyday lifestyle.
Until we can control what we put in our mouths, knowing what's good (or not-so-good) for our bodies doesn't help.
A year ago I communicated with Dr Roger Gould, who created a 12 week online course (costs about $120?) that tries to get to the roots of our eating issues.
The good news is I recently heard from another popular diet website who are looking at combining some of Dr Goulds material into their weight loss program. An excellent and helpful move. After all if weight loss were as easy another diet book - wouldn't we all have our weight under control by now?
Has anybody tried these?
