Hoodia: Does It Really Work?

Search for Hoodia on Google, and there are no less than 20 paid advertisements for Hoodia diet pills adorning the page. Suddenly the Internet seems littered with Hoodia web sites all touting the latest herbal extract.

Hoodia Gordonii is a succulent plant (cactus) native to the South Western region of Africa. The BBC reports:

The San Bushmen of the Kalahari, one of the world's oldest and most primitive tribes, had been eating the Hoodia for thousands of years, to stave off hunger during long hunting trips.

Hoodia contains a molecule (called P.57) that appears to have a profound affect on suppressing hunger - and with this no apparent side effects:

What the Hoodia seems to contain is a molecule that is about 10,000 times as active as glucose.

"It goes to the mid-brain and actually makes those nerve cells fire as if you were full. But you have not eaten. Nor do you want to."

Phytopharm (an English pharmaceutical company) obtained the license to Hoodia, which was then sold on to giant company Unilever.

The Hoodia Controversy

If Unilever has not yet begun to market it's product why are so many companies selling Hoodia pills? A 60 minutes report also outlined that while it was possible to make synthetic Hoodia, it was just too expensive:
"We've made milligrams of it. But it's very expensive. It's not possible to make it synthetically in what's called a scalable process. So we couldn't make a metric ton of it or something that is the sort of quantity you'd need to actually start doing something about obesity in thousands of people."
Apparently the only viable alternative is to grow Hoodia commercially, and extract the active ingredient from the harvested plant.

Hoodia - Where Can I Get It?

A number of Hoodia sellers offer free trials. Note that they still charge a shipping and handling fee.

What do you for a living that you do a lot of walking? Also, 5'6 & 150lbs isn't exactly "big girl" and at 5'6 & 126lbs you're gonna be turning heads there Shannon! Now don't you go causing any traffic accidents

Congrats on your loss to-date. It's always nice to hear something works for somebody :-)

Try eating chicken and not kfc. Try skinless chicken breast lots of protien and hardly any fat. And it will fill you up, eat as much as you want.

6 weeks ago, I was 5'3 and 143lbs. Now, I'm still 5'3 but I lost 15 lbs.. so I'm 128 lbs.

How do I do it? By limiting my calorie intake. I did not do exercise. I did not take any diet pills.

The most important way to monitor what u are putting in your mouth.

Just think,
1 muffin can contain more than 500 calories,
some coffee blends can have as much as 700 calories..

But u only burn 450 calories doing aerobics for 1 whole hour.

So while exercise is important, diet is most important.

I agree with Jan on the whole concept of an "appetite suppressant". While you take them, you feel energetic and not very hungry, so you eat only half a cheeseburger instead of a whole one. And you'll lose weight by eating less, but like Jan said, your body will get used to the smaller caloric intake. Once you stop taking the pills, your appetite will come back again. And you will eat the whole cheeseburger now. So if you were to take the appetite suppressant for the rest of your life, I guess it would work. I was able to lose weight without any appetite suppressants even though I have a huge appetite. My secret? Eating veggies/salad/fresh fruit. It fills up your stomach without adding too many calories to your diet.

Reading the comments on this blog, I notice that no one has mentioned a side effect I've experienced after using Hoodia for the past three weeks -- decreased sexual libido. I take 750mg of Hoodia twice a day, about an hour before lunch and dinner, and I have noticed a sharp decrease in my appetite. However, my sex drive has also taken a dive, so to speak. I'm 48 and have had, until recently, the usual urges several times a week. But something has definitely changed. Since the hypothalmus regulates more than just appetite, and Hoodia changes the chemistry of this organ, wouldn't it make sense that your sex drive can also be shut down by this stuff?

Hi Marko,
That's quite interesting that your libido is decreased as I've heard that the San Bushmen said it increased their libido significantly. Nevertheless, effects for one person aren't necessarily the same for another. Interesting point nevertheless.

All,
I did receive my Hoodia that I got from the guys at and have noticed a significant decrease in my appetite, however I still have a long way to go! I think excercise makes a big difference. I've started an evening walk now for 30 minutes everyday and that seems to help too. Will keep you posted with my progress.
All the best,
Chris

Update on my progress. It's been almost two weeks since I've been taking Hoodia and besides my craving to eat being almost eliminated, the other major side effect for me has been my sleep. Prior to taking Hoodia, I hadn't had a solid (7+ hrs) nights sleep in as long as I can remember. I used to constantly get up in the middle of the nights, most times twice. In the past two weeks I've been sleeping from 10/11 to 6am or later. I feel so much better it's amazing. I am 37 and have tried so many different things and nothing ever did a dang thing for me except empty my wallet. Hoodia is the first supplement I've ever taking that has had such a dramatic improvement of my life.

I know I need to do some exercise. I haven't had the will power to do it yet but I want to. I'm confident with that added to the mix, the weight will come off. In regards to how much I'm eating today vs two weeks ago, it's _easily_ 1000+ calories a day LESS. I used to "snack" all night and all day on weekends. Not any more.

Just found this site and found the info on Hoodia very interesting...I just started this three days ago and feel terrific! I am using HoodiLean by Phytobase 4 450 caps/day...My scale isn't that accurate but I THINK I've lost a couple of pounds... I noticed that someone earlier posted that they had lost the desire to drink wine--me too! I used to drink way too much (at least a bottle of wine/day)--the first day I took Hoodia I didn't really enjoy the little wine I had and now I can't face the thought! Believe me, this is major! This alone could help me lose weight--and save my liver!

Hi guys, I'm from South-Africa and this is really the first time I have ever heard of this product. I'm currently investigating since I am interested in going on a trial myself, but interestingly enough, the products that are available to all you guys, doesn't even exist here in SA. I'm aware of the scams going around, now its up to me to find the real thing. I'm going to the chemist tonight, there is a distributor called Unique that I trust, but whose to say. It costs R130 for a months supply. According to the chemist, there is also a brand that sells two pills for R100.. I thought two pills!!! that’s damn expensive for us in our currency, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized, if its that expensive, maybe its the real thing. I'm going to try out both and let you know what the name is of the other brand.

I remembered that I had a friend who grew up in the Northern Cape, Upington area. That basically is a desert on its own. She told me as children they usually ate of a plant that grew wildly there, and it took away their appetite for a whole week. I thought, yeah right, whatever, but now, the more I think about it, the more pieces of this puzzle comes together. And she is anorexicly thin!!!

Unfortunately, she moved back to Upington, and I lost contact with her.

Maybe I can grow my own plants, won't that be something. Just kidding.

I'll write back tomorrow and let you know. If someone wants to chat to me personally, my e-mail addy is michel_luce@yahoo.com

Hi guys. Michelle again. I promised some feedback. I went to the chemist last night, got the brand Unique.
see [URL Removed]
but I wasnt able to get hold of the two pills for R100.
I took 1 tablet for breakfast and another one at 12h00, but I guess its not quite the result I was hoping for.

I will continue this, I have noted some of you mentioning that for some people, it takes a while, so I will be patient.
In a way it does work, but its not like I will say no if someone gives me something delicious to eat.

Maby I'm also an emotional eater, I usually eat out of bordem.

Oh well. I will let you know the results in a few weeks time.
Good luck to all of you. If any of you have lost weight in the meantime, give us more specific information like how much, and what exactely you ate etc.

Thanx guys. maby I should check out other products too until I find something I dig instantly.

I started the Desert Burn hoodia about four days ago. There is this strange sensation of fulling full. I've taken 2 capsules in the morning as directed by the instructions on the bottle. They say you can take more in the afternoon if you need it. My worst time of day for snacking is after dinner. But since I've started this, I've cut way back on the snacking. I've actually lost a couple of pounds already which is significant because I've been stuck at my weight for about 6 mos. I've been excersising on a regular basis and trying to eat healthy but I was always so hungry in the evening I always blew it then. So far I haven't needed the extra capsules in the afternoon.

Hi. Well, I have been fighting my night time eating for a long time. I have gained so much weight. I usually do not try many of the weight loss diets anymore. Thought none really worked, but saw a documentary of this plant long time ago and since wanted to try it.
I got my first bottle of Hoodithin extract today and tried my first dose in some 7up. Thought it would taste bad, but could not even taste it, but haven't been hungry since. I did eat dinner but seemed to get fuller and not hungry at all now and it has been hours. I feel more energy it seems.
As far as taking chances since has not been thoroughly tested, being obese can cause a lot of problems with your health and even kill you, so willing to take that chance.
Maybe it is like pot smoking for some people say they do not feel it the first times. Might be the same for some people.
I know it makes a difference what frame of mind you are in when you diet and of course why you eat overeat could play a big part.
Good luck to you all.

Hello, I also purchased Hoodithin and received it a few days ago. I took it thru the weekend while out of town and was able to eat without feeling out of control. It seems since Wednesday I have lost 3.5 pounds. I need to lose over 100 pounds so I have to say that I have been desperate. Since a friend told me of Hoodia I thought I would give it a try. She hadn't tried so I felt it was as a shot in the dark. Not knowing anyone personally who has been successful with it.

My concern is that there are so many Hoodia products available. I choose the Hoodithin because it is a liquid. It actually tastes like Molasses so that concerned me too. As mentioned before the liquid usually tastes bad.

At the same time I have just begun going to a medical professional who specializes in weight loss with the use of drugs. I waited till Monday to start the Doctors regime. and took the Hoodithin in the meantime. So I feel that the Hoodithin has really been an aid to lessoning my appetite. I notice mostly that it has lessened my appetite for carbs.. Just previously to taking it I was eating late at night and not able to get full, craving sweets. I have not felt that way since my first use of Hoodithin.

It hasn't been a week for me. I am hoping that this will do it along with my doctors help. The Hoodithin website said that there would be no contradicting effects if I am on prescription meds. I will ask my doctor when I see her in a few weeks to make sure. So for the now I will stick to it and hopefully I will have even better news in a few weeks.

I did some net research on hoodia and am quite amused. IS obesity a disease that you can get rid of with such pills and medicines? How can a diet suppressent be a diet supplement, the way some websites are marketing their products. Is hoodia not one more addition to the growing obesity industry - first get fat, than use the pill! Then what? Put on weight again? Because now there is a sure fire medicine for it? I think we are promoting more and more indiscipline with these gimmicks. There may be hundreds of such appetite suppresents in nature - that tast so ugly that you won't feel like eating again for the rest of your life! I am happy this fad is growing thin and out.

I have taken hoodia and I believe it works by swelling the back part of the tongue... at least for me. Because when I take it the back of my tongue gets hard and scratchy... well you know how there's that gag-reflex thing, I think that it puts just enough pressure on that to make your mind think... oh well I must be full. And so it probably doesn't work for people with no gag reflex.. that is my assumption b/c it did not work for my cousin who has none for whatever reason. But it has worked wonders for me as I have lost 34 lbs on it. Anyway.. just thought I'd share my results.
Oh, and if the technology and herbs are available we might as well use them... After all we use electricity and modern medicine so if a pill will kill my appetite.. okay I don't need self control. heh... but in all truth if you go so long eating little tiny portions you train yourself to get used to it. So yes this pill does help people lose weight healthily, if it works for you. Because it works for me and I hardly want to eat.

I would love to know Mary, how long you've been taking hoodia to lose 34 pounds. I've been reading all the messges on this blog and can't seem to find anyone that is posting that they are losing wieght with weeks or months of using hoodia. Everyone seems to have just started taking hoodia and has only been on it for a few days. I would like to hear what the average wieght loss is per week and if it is consistent.

I started taking it last week so its been one week and one day and I have to say it definelty surpresses my appetite. I've lost 2 pounds as of this morning. You're right about the tongue, mine feels a bit swelled and my mouth is a bit dry. It does surpress your thrist too.

If this supplement can take the edge off those out of control hunry times I'm extatic! Keep me posted on you results as I will too. Thanks!

Hi,I mentioned in earlier message that I had just started Hoodithin before Christmas, and found it really helps to control what you eat. Really will help a person lose weight. Controlling our hunger pangs will let us win the battle no matter what diet regime we choose.
Some people are quick to make cynical remarks that is not correct. If we can control the hunger pangs, then that is most of the battle on any diet.
I have lost 60 lbs on my own fighting it all the way, but since got on this Hoodithin, I started dropping faster and easier right away. Lost 5lbs through christmas holiday. FANTASTIC!
With this, I know I will be able to wear my summer clothes again by this summer, for the first time in many years.

Firstly, people who take diet pills, usually think they can eat how they normally did, and still lose the weight. Just because you are taking Hoodia, does not mean you can fill your face with chips and burgers, you have to eat properly, not more.

Yes, I also read that hoodia can take a week or two to start working to its full capacity. Furthermore, many hoodia products out there contain LITTLE or NO HOODIA AT ALL, so that could also be the problem many of you are having.

I have been doing some research on hoodia and stumbled onto this blog. I of course ran across the product Desert Burn 750, I do not believe it is available to me locally - only online. Being that I am a person of impulse, when I make up my mind to do something, I want to be able to 'do it now', rather it is to get my hair cut, start a diet, try a new product or whatever, I don't want to wait, hence I do not want to have to place an order. Therefore I called some local Health food stores to inquire what type of Hoodia products they carried. The two that stood out were Nature's Way containing (per capsule) 500MG of hoodia gordonii from the stem and I think it is called First Naturals also containing 500MG however with calcium added. Has anyone tried these brands and if so would you please share your results/findings? Of course some of the stores carried products that contained mixed extracts, but from what I have researched, this is not 'the real stuff'.
I would appreciate any feedback offered.
I used to be a 'Dexatrim junky' back in the old days when the little yellow pill really did the job - it suppressed my appetite and gave me the help I needed to cut my caloric intake and therefore I always ended up losing weight or maintaing my desired weight. Then they were yanked from the market. The new 'natural dexatrims' do not work for me, I have tried the green tea formula etc. they just do not do it! I need help in finding something that works. It could be a combination of my age and hormonal changes playing havoc with my weight, but I have never had such a difficult time of trying to get and keep my weight under control - this is not fun!!
Thanks!! Nance

Hi Nance,

I posted a few messages ago when I first started taking Hoodia and since have been thrilled!

Unike you Nance, I have NEVER been able to handle diet pills. Back in highschool, I took some diet pills and had terrible jittery side effects. They make me feel very "funky". This is the first diet supplement I've taken in 20 years. (I'm 39).

I too did alot of research on the best brand of hooida to buy but got a bit overwhelmed and confused at all the info out there. I decided to just go to GNC and look. I ended up with what I feel is a great product called Dex-L10 by Del Mar labs. I specifically wanted something with no green tea or other additives because I'm not sure how I would feel with those added ingredients in my system throughout the day(ie. too jittery). This particular brand contains 500mg of hoodia gordonii (stem). I feel like I stumbled upon a good brand.

I started taking it late in the day on Tuesday Dec 20th and defintly felt it kick in full force by the 24th. I feel sometimes I could go the whole day without eating! I am just amazed at the supression of my appetite. With that said, I must say it also surpresses your thirst. I know how important water is so I am consiously drinking water throughout the day.

I am not a silly dieter who trys to starve herslf, I am very health consious and eat fairly healthy and try to walk/ run a few times per week. I overeat when I get stressed and snack too much. I could lose a good 20 pounds and be happy.

I am not changing my healthy habits just because I'm taking hoodia. Bottom line is that it is helping to omit the desire to binge on something fattening when stress kicks in, or mindlessy snack too much. Even though I could easily skip a meal becuase I'm just not as hungry, I know that I will get weak, sluggish and slow my metabolism so I am just eating smaller protions and avg about 1400 cals day. Which is perfect for me to lose wieght. I normally eat around 2-2500 cals day.

I was down 5 pounds as of Dec 31st. Because it was New Years Eve I stopped taking the pills for that day because I did'nt know how they would mix with alcohol. We had a two day clebration with friends which included alot of food and becuase I didn't take another pill until late in the day on Jan 1st I gained back 2 pounds.

So overall, I'm down 3 pounds during the most difficult time of the year and hope to see this continuous weight loss each week. i really think if I would'nt have taken a break from it those two days I'd have lost more. I think it's important to keep taking it each day becuase I've noticed it's taken a while to build back up in my system to where I notice the appetite supression agian. Today it finally feels back to a strong surpression of appetite.

Hope that helps!
Chris

I'm very curious about this hoodi-stuff. I just placed an order for hoodithin today. I'm one of those that has struggled with my weight most of my life. Since my boyfriend and I started living together I've gained over 15 pounds and its really starting to bother me. I am pretty active and work out regularly, however when I get the munchies look out. I really went a little crazy over the holidays and I must admit am suffering the consequences now that my pants don't fit. So, as my journey to get back into my clothes continues, I will try to keep those of you that may be interested up to date on my hopefull success.

I've got a 15month old & I am still nursing twice a day (night & morning). I also a bit of baby weight to take off so I am wondering it this product would work for me and if it is safe enough to take while nursing twice a day. I am inclined to wait until I am done with the nursing completely cuz I don't want anything from the hoodia trickling into baby. But does anyone out there know the answer to this one ?

I've started hoodia750 and must say the First WEEK it worked minimally. However the SECOND week, my appetite is almost gone.

What kept me going was that I read alot about the product and many people have said that they did not get the full benefits until the second week.

Today is the last day of the second week and I've lost 7lbs.

Just posting with my progress with Hoodia. As i stated in a previous message, I starting taking Hoodia on Dec 20 and noticed awesome results within 4 days. I could not beleive my lack of appetite! I then stopped for two days on Dec 31 becuase i knew I would be drinking and did'nt want to mix the two. I started up agian on the 2nd and I have to say I have not had the same feeling of appetite supression. It's better than normal but not like when I first started taking the herb. When I first started taking the supplement I could litterally go the whole day without earting, I just wasn't hungry. I am still trying to eat healthy and I am down a total of 5 pounds since the 20th of Dec. I am even taking the max amount (6 per day @ 500mg) I guess 5 pounds in almost 3 weeks isn't bad I was just hoping for the awesome feeling of appetite supression I had in the beginging. I'm not going to give up though, I definelty think there is something to this Hoodia thing. I've been taking Hoodia Dex-L10 from gnc and now am considering ordering Desert Burn off the internet. I have read that Dessert Burn and Hoodathin (sp?) seem to be the most talked about brands. Anyone go off it and then back on and notice a difference? Thanks!

oops, one more thing! I wanted to respond to sosinto about nursing. I nursed all three of my kids for a year and I would not take anything if you don't have to. It really is a risk for adults to take hoodia right now since there isn't a ton if info on it's long term saftey yet. I know that what we put into our bodies does travel to the baby through the milk. It's simply not worth it in my opinion. Just my opinion. Thanks!

I found a site on consumerhealthdigest.com where they rate a lot of the diet pills out there. The #1 pill they found was Lipovarin (96 out of a 100) - has anyone heard of this or better yet tried it? On ebay they seem to be quite popular and they are not cheap. Thanks!
