Trans Fat Obsession Begins

With the new US dietary guidelines warning against trans fats (partially hydrogenated oils), many food manufacturers have been quick to respond. However AP reports that restaurants are faced with some real challenges:

"Unfortunately, the restaurant industry has almost become addicted to them because it's sort of the cheap and easy thing to do,"

There has been some backlash against the US guidelines due to a last minute change:

Doctors and scientists who developed the recommendations for the dietary guidelines set a specific trans fat limit: People should consume 1 percent or less of their calorie intake.

But when the Agriculture and Health and Human Services (news - web sites) departments issued the guidelines, they changed that to keeping consumption "as low as possible."

Expect to see a lot more about trans fats in popular media over the next year.
