General Mills Won't Stop Marketing to Kids

General Mills (who manufacture brands such as Cheerios) have announced they plan to keep marketing to children. Taking advantage of current press on the new USDA dietary guidelines, Vice President Ken Powell said:

...cereal, the main focus of General Mills's marketing toward children, is the top source of whole grains in children's diets. Eating more whole grains is one focus of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's dietary guidelines.

The company will also continue marketing other foods to children - including the not-so-healthy ones. This is in contrast to Kraft who suggested they would stop marketing foods such as Oreos cookies to kids under 12. However they all intend to join forces:

Kraft, Kellogg and General Mills have formed a lobbying group, the Alliance for American Advertising, to defend their right to advertise to children.

Kraft Chief Executive Roger Deromedi said his company believes the food industry should regulate its own advertising, rather than have guidelines imposed by regulators.
