Supermodel Perspectives On Weight

FashionGates reports on Sports Illustrated's latest all-American cover model Carolyn Murphy. Murphy makes some intriguing comments regarding her selection:

"I never thought I'd make the pages of Sports Illustrated, because I've always been skinny. But after I had my daughter, I had hips, I had boobs," says Murphy, who have previously appeared in SI's Swimsuit Edition in 2004, but never on the cover of the magazine. "It takes some adjustment. My partner, he loves it, but it's something I had to embrace."

The new 5'9''-tall SI cover model, who weighted 182 pounds during her pregnancy and got beck to her current 120 pounds within a year, says, "I'd like to reach out to more women and different body types."

I'm not quite sure how being an underweight (BMI 18) SI cover model will "reach out to more women and different body types".

acctually she is within normal weight
anywhere between 18-23 bmi is ideal
most models (including actresses, pornstars,..) are in the anorexic or underweight criteria, she is one of the few models that are normal weight

Jenna Jameson is 5'5 & 105lbs & considered anorexic/underweight (her bmi is 17.5) is she bony? or sickly? not at all!

I don't think she's underweight...she looks great

Reply
Noelle

Actually, she is underweight and to be honest, if she tried to educate me on how it's "okay" to have a different body type, I think I would laugh. Her body type is no different than any of the other waif-like models in the agency. Her breasts may be a size B instead of an A, but that's hardly a change. It's much easier to embrace the idea of a positive self-image coming from a person that is actually within the healthy weight range, than it is coming from someone who IS underweight and will probably continue to lose weight because she's still completely engulfed in this industry which tends to worship Auschwitz-survivor-like bodies.

I think Carolyn Murphy looks great. granted shes skinny, but she has muscle definition which means she works out. i know she surfs and is an avid runner but does anyone know her exercise and diet routine?

Reply
Shannon

I think Carolyn Murphy is beautiful. She doesn't fit the typical model mold. As Adrienne said, she's athletic, not anorexic.

I strongly disagree with everything Noelle had to say. Hey, Noelle, are you a heffer? Cause you sure sound like one. Major props for shining through your writing. ;)

p.s. and her bf, Brandon Boyd, is probably the single coolest man on the planet... go Carolyn!

Why, yes. In fact, Shannon, I am a heffer.
A mean one, too.

You are right, that Brandon Boyd, he is incredible.

Anywho. I am a fat heffer. I have herpes. And fleas.

WOW.You all wrote that it was "normal" weight --120 lbs at 5'9. I'm 5'9 and no way am i 120 lbs.Just shocked people think that's normal.

Reply
Shannon

120 is so underweight. 120 is underweight for my height 5'6 so its definitly underweight for 5'9. plus since her boobs are bigger than other models than some of her fat went there instead and if she works out alot some of that weight is from muscles.

Reply
Charlotte

5'6" and 120 lbs. IS NOT UNDERWEIGHT. http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

I'm 5'8", and 125 lbs. My doctor says I'm healthy and this is normal for MY BODY TYPE.

How's this for self-esteem issues: being called everything from "boy-chested" to anorexic. That was when I was 111 lbs. I WAS underweight then, but couldn't help it, as I was 14, and had gained all of my height at once, without the accompanying pubescent body fat.

You "normal" girls (and the boys, too) made me cry all through middle and most of high school.

When are you nutjobs going to get that bodies come in ALL DIFFERENT SHAPES?

Being skinny is not a crime..I don't think that girls should try and strive for being as thin as Ms. Murphy, but if that's how she feels the most confident, more power to her. And there's no doubt about it--skinny models make people want to buy the product. I see nothing wrong with losing weight to look great. Not one of you can tell me honestly that you would hate to lose 5 pounds. I don't think we should berate models for being thin. That's what they like. And also, it's not like they don't eat--they exercise A LOT. And they eat foods that don't go to your waist and stomache--like veggies and fruits and lean meat. They are actually probably some of the healthiest and strongest people out there. Just because they are among the few that have finally taken control of their weight and diet doesn't mean that everyone should get all jealous and start bringing them down. I admire them.

I 5'9 workout 7 days a week run on treamill 1 hour, row, kicbox and lift weight 110 pounds.I'm a female and i weight 145 and i eat clean 6 days a week a drink lots of water.I use to be 130 and the doctor said i was close to being under weight so i went up to 145.So if you call a buck 20 at 5'9 healthy you been drinking a tad bit to much.

While most models are rightly criticized for being too thin, others (like perhaps Carolyn Murphy) are naturally skinny and experience the opposite discrimination. For instance, she reported not being able to land a job until she got some curves. Being petite myself, I go on a similar rant on my blog.

Carolyn Murphy looks sensational! Unlike most "skinny fat" models, she has some muscles.

But I suspect she weighs considerably more than 120 pounds - her management know that if they said she weighed, say 135 pounds, other women would think she was "fat". Whatever - she looks great, and healthy.

I am 5'9 and 120 pounds. I have weighed between 120-125 pounds since high school. I have 5 children and after each pregnancy I returned back to my average weight. Even after the birth of twins. I have always struggled with gaining weight and continue to do so. It has always been a source of low esteem for me. Although I am always being told that I look like a model and am genetically predisposed to being thin in a country where the average American is overweight I have always had to bear the label of being unhealthy or deal with comments like these I have read on this site. Just as there are models in magazines which are constant reminders to women that they are heavy, just watch any music video and see big breasted, heavy bottom, wide hipped women who remind you every day that being thin isn't what is appealing. Try and shop in any American store that doesn't have clothing for tall thin women because American women are heavier and bigger then ever before. So we should all be patient and less judgemental with each other and consider that we all have struggles because we live in a society where self acceptance is not what the media feeds us on a constant basis.

Just remember that not everyone is BUILT like a model either. I am a very mesomorphic-built woman...I'm short and curvaceous and could never model even though I'm relatively thin. I have a lot of muscle and I think models with muscles look much better than the ones that never work out and look like they have spaghetti legs. I just don't get why magazines don't use more average-built women to model things. Not necessarily "fat" or "plus-sized" women, just ones that aren't 5'9" and 110 lbs. I mean, I'd like to see, just once, how a pair of jeans would look on MY 5'3", 105 lb body and not some skinny waif.

Reply
Sally

Lol. Try this: Put on your fave pair of jeans, and look in a full-length mirror, sweetness. ;-)

She means *before* she buys the pair of jeans, "sweetness".

I thought it was obvious from her statement, and also the reason most people buy fashion magazines - the exception here would be people who work in the fashion industry.

I don't see how you all can be so wrapped up in looks and weight! I think that the media should show more women who are at least average (5'4", 145 lbs) but if a model is genuinely healthy, as opposed to anorexically skinny, then there's no reason to be so negative towards her.
Shouldn't we all be able to love our bodies?! I am considered onerweight but I am not obese, I could never model, but I love me anyway! :)

Dianne,

Just don't pay attention to the media.

Spectra,

I agree. Women who work out on a regular basis (and look like it) would be a nice change indeed. There are many heavier women (heavier than 5"9 and 120 lbs) that are extremely healthy and fit.

I am 5'9" and 150 lbs and really only have muscles in a few places. I think I am overweight and want to be 130 lbs. I've been working on this for 2 years. Is this a reasonable goal?

Reply

im 5"10 and weigh 120 pounds...and i hate it. i long to just be 'normal' weight, but it is hard for me to put on weight because of my metabolism. the only time i ever feel ok about the way i look is when i look at a fashion magazine. but i also think that there should be more average height, average weight women in magazines, and in australia some of our magazines (such as cosmopolitan) are starting to realise this and im happy to say that they include almost all body types, tall, thin, short, chubby, average.

Why on EARTH can't a 120 pound woman reach out to other women with different body types? I don't see why thats so funny- maybe to fat people, but seriously.

If anything for all the over-weight people out there her body should be like a goal, maybe not that EXACT weight, but something to look forewords to. If you loose those extra pounds you could look like her too.

Most of the girls at my school must weigh 110 pounds or less, and me being 116 and 5"6, I don't know- it's motivation to loose the tummy flab.

oh my. ok, how is being 5'9 and 120 pounds healthy???? dude that's just disgusting. I'm 5'8 and i weigh 140,and people already come to the conclusion that i am anorexic because you can count my ribs. If i can count my ribs,Carolyn Murphy can see her heart beat.

There's no way you can look anorexic at 5'8" 140lbs, that's not that thin. I'm 5'9", 130 lbs and I don't look anorexic, please

Reply

Maria, genetics also comes into play, as well as body fat percentage, and fitness. Some people are naturally more curvy and have more fat (which weighs much less than lean, muscle tissue). Emma could very well look incredibly thin at 5'8" 140.... She might just have a different body composition than you. I am 5'9" and weigh almost 140, and I work hard to be as thin and fit as I am. I cannot even imagine weighing twenty pounds lighter, but I guess that's why Carolyn Murphy is a super model and I am not :)

Robert:
The body of this woman cannot be the goal for many women and shouldn't be, because many women are not built like that. They would never reach this goal, because of their physique they already have. Trying to reach it anyway without realizing that they never can will make them miserable. Life is too short for this kind of crap.
This is why I promote more body types, for a change. Just a wider range. Athletic women for example, strong women (come in many sizes and not all of them are 5"9')

And I would never want to look like her. Period. I prefer my athletic physique. Believe it or not.

Reply
Jan

I agree, Katy. If I wanna look up to ideal women I'll never resemble, because of genetics, give me curvy Scarlett Johansson or muscular Monica Brant any day. Models to me just look sick. I prefer women who look like they eat.

What all of you forget is that BMI is not the ultimate guarantor of health. Until you each see your doctors on an individual basis, no one here online who is not a doctor and has not seen you personally can say whether or not your weight is ideal for your particular body or lifestyle. There is more to consider than shallow comparisons to airbrushed, doctored magazine photos. If it was that easy there would be no nutrionists or doctors who are specialized in this field.

Reply
Jan

um, nobody said that BMI was the ultimate measure of health. What Jim pointed out is that a model with a BMI of 18 is as unrealistic/uncommon as one with a BMI of 17, I'm talking averages here. Her new BMI of 18 doesn't make her that much closer to the average woman, or to a wider variety of women, for her to be able to "reach out to women with different body types" any better than she could when she had a BMI of 17. Of course she can reach out to women now just as much as she could then, because of her attitude, but that 1 point there is not really making a difference in making her more relatable.

And you are right, nobody looks like a magazine cover. In the immortal words of Cindy Crawford, "Even I don't look like Cyndi Crawford".

I have to admit I find this topic thread a little unnerving. There is certainly value in being healthy, and it's true that America's obesity rate has been skyrocketing in recent years - but being skinny does not mean you are necessarily healthy. I think far more important than how you look is why you look like that, and what behaviors gave your that physique. If you weigh 120 pounds, at the absolute extreme limit of a healthy BMI, and you are that way because of genetics or metabolism, that's one thing. But I think media image and some of the very opinions put forth on this board are why so many adolescent girls turn to anoerxia nervosa and bulimia. If you are not built to look like a supermodel, eating disorders can get you to that weight you're idealizing, but not in a way that's worth the cost. Health should always come before image, and I'm concerned that it doesn't very often in our society.

ITA! As a society, we are way too obsessed with numbers and "fitting in" to some impossible ideal set by "supermodels." Some models are naturally thin but many more maintain that look through dugs and starvation. What kind of message does that send to the public? Why not turn our focus away from media figures to our own overall happiness and satisfaction with life? Research shows that happiness and satisfaction with one's life play an important role in maintaining health:

wtf people get a life, stop complaining about models being too skinny and start trying to change it.

Everyone can look and feel great in whatever type of body they have built, skinny, thin, bigger, boyish. It doesn't matter what you look like just be happy with who you are. Stop talking on this website, and go out and make the most of life. YOU PEOPLE MAKE ME SICK!

Body built has a lot to do with how you look at a certain weight as well.

Someone who is 5'9" and weighs 120lbs might look okay if they have a small bone structure. I'm 5'9" and I weigh about 140. I have a medium bone structure and I look completely healthy, I mean, you can see my ribs sorta, but I wear a size 6 and so I don't feel like I'm too big or too skinny. If I was 120lbs, I would look sickly and boney. The average weight for someone who is 5'9" is 130-165. Someone who has a smaller bone structure can get away with being 120, someone who has a large bone structure should probably stay around 150-165. I'm just saying, I'm not sticking up for ridiculously skinny models, some of them are ridiculous, but some are just lucky to be fit. But on the other end, someone who is 5'9" and 150 lbs isn't a heffer.

Reply
Jan

Elin - I think Carolyn does look great at 120lb now. But what scares me is, that is still technically underweight (BMI 18) and she looks *way* larger than 99% of models out there. So that means your average model is very, very underweight.

Why does it have to be about a measurement? BMI? Height and weight? I think we should look at someone and be able to tell if they are (for the most part) healthy or not! And if we want to be "perfect" body weight for ourself (every body is different!), then why dont we all just eat healthy foods and exercise? thats it! no "diet" or anything! I eat a loooot~but its all healthy food! i like my meals to be very well balanced, and i exercise for 30 min. 6 days/week. i am 5'9" and 137 lbs and wear a size four. i have myself a cute little booty, and my husband loves it! i take care of my body, and its not about the weight or BMI (not always)---how do you feel? how do you look? Too fat or too skinny is obviously unhealthy-and i am sure we can look at our own body and tell. we should know better then go by an exact criteria.

I think that 5'9 and a 120 lbs is just plain out gross who would wanna look like that not me and hopefully not you seriously people die from just wanting to be skinny its very sickning and sad at the same time I feel horribile that people have to go through anorexia just because they dont love the way their body is and dont love themselves enough! I am 5'10 and weigh 160lbs and love my body just the way it is! I am not even close to being overweight and just wish people could see their bodies the way that i see mine!Just remember life is WAY to short to be worrying about your body you only have 1 life here on earth and dont know where or when your life will end so make the full of it.Stay the way you are because god loves the way you are already!

don't label someone as anorexic when you don't even know them at all. it's called a high metabolism. some people have a much higher metabolism than others, so get your facts straight. i'm 5'8" and 110 lbs and i'm not anorexic. i eat whatever the heck i want, and i eat all the time!
