Abs Diet: Now Online
The Abs Diet by David Zinczenko (Editor of Mens Health magazine) has been a very popular book. It is quite similar to Bill Phillips' Body For Life, and aims to get people thinking of the whole picture - strength training, cardio, as well as eating right.
The Abs Diet has now gone online - offering a subscription based program with a selection of excellent tools. They currently have a Free 10 day trial (but nowhere could I find the ongoing costs of the program).
The Abs Diet has been expertly marketed by Rodale (who also market the South Beach Diet). It has a lot of good sensible advice (eating 5-6 times per day, whole carbs, good fats). It is very strong in providing clear workout plans (many with an emphasis on abdominal muscles). However it does stretch things a bit with the claim on abdominal fat.
Lose Extra Pounds and Inches: With belly fat coming off first.Unfortunately fat tends to come off where it will (often like layers peeling off an onion). Anecdotally it seems to come off in the opposite way it goes on. If you get a fat tummy first, that's usually the last place the fat will exit from. The Abs Diet also has other claims such as "...you'll convert fat to muscle". Fat is burned off, muscle is built - perhaps that's what is implied.
The Abs Diet also has a list of 12 "Power Foods":
1) Almonds and Other Nuts eaten with skins intact.A great selection of foods that the author has cleverly selected and arranged to spell the word "ABSDIETPOWER".
2) Beans and Other Legumes
3) Spinach and Other Green Vegetables
4) Dairy: Fat-free or low-fat milk, yogurt, cheese, cottage cheese
5) Instant Oatmeal: Unsweetened, unflavored
6) Eggs
7) Turkey and other lean meats. Lean steak, chicken, fish
8) Peanut Butter - All-natural, sugar-free.
9) Olive Oil
10) Whole-Grain Breads and Cereals
11) Extra-Protein (Whey) Powder
12) Raspberries and Other Berries
Nothing really new in the Abs Diet - but you wouldn't go to far wrong by having either Burn The Fat, Feed The Muscle, Body For Life, or The Abs Diet in your collection.
I have been doing this diet for a couple of weeks now. I am 5'9 and weighed 192 lbs. I mostly bodybuild with very little cardio. I have been doing restrictive diets for about 12 years now with not much success.
For the first time I am eating a decent amount and not restricting.
My weight shot up to 198 lbs though! I haven't lost any inches but none of my shirts fit in the shoulders anymore. I may be eating too much ~2600 cals. Here is my typical day. Please comment:
Meal 1
Shake: 1c Skim Milk, 1c berries, 1scoop protein powder
Meal 2
1/2C cashews
1C berries
Meal 3
1c Skim Milk
1 large apple
Chicken sandwich on multigrain
(~3oz chicken)
Meal 4
1/2C cashews
1C berries
Meal 5
1c Skim Milk
1 large apple
Chicken sandwich on multigrain
(~3oz chicken)
Meal 6
ReplyWhole wheat breton crackers ~15
1C lean ground beef
1C broccoli
Vince, there are a couple reasons the diet might not be working for you. It looks like you might be eating too many servings of the same foods. Zinczenko states to have only one or two servings of an item a day. You are having over two servings of berries and bread. If you notice, Zinczenko doesn't have fruit with the meals. Cut back on fruit and bread, the latter being more important. Almonds are more nutritious than cashews(make sure they don't have salt or are roasted in oil). Try adding more greens and legumes to your meals. Drink green tea to help suppress your appetite, drink lots of water (diet pop makes you crave foods and dehydrates.
ReplyMake sure you are changing up your workout routine to keep your body changing. And add more cardio.
Hi everyone:
I'm so exited to say that in only 2 months i went from a 34 to a 30 with all my six-pack abs and a ripped body! Don't waste your money and time trying to find out which is the best way for weight-loss, Get The Abs Diet and you will see what i'm talking about! it's AMAZING!
ReplyHi, i have had the same results as terri GAINING weight after two weeks would also like to know what i am doing wrong its a little bit disheartning!! esp after all the hype about the programme.
ReplyHello...I have read the book and read your comments and have just started this new program. I was wondering if anyone on this diet has taken any diet pills or supplements to help with metabolism and energy to go along with it. I could really use the energy. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks
ReplyHi, I am 5ft and I started the absdiet in the beginning of this past summer. I lost 15lbs going from 120 to 105 and my body has never looked soo good. I found it difficult tho once I went to college because I was not able to gorcery shop and cook the meals I needed too. I continued to work out and I still try to eat as healthy as possible. My body was very toned and I almost had an eight pack if thats possible lol. This diet really works and its soo hard not to eat healthy after being on it for only a little while. Good luck to you all!! Its almost summer I cant wait to start grocery shopping and cooking! :)
ReplyThis is exactly what book tells you NOT to do.
ReplyI'm considering trying out abs diet. From my understanding this diet focuses primarily on changing your lifestyle (eating habbits). Does this diet help you lose weight in other areas other than JUST your abs? Is there a domino effect, where the weight is shed from other areas of your body as well?
ReplyWell you have 3 formal meals and 2-3 "snacks". You can split your meals in half and have the other half for snack. I do the smoothie in the morning which has 2 servings. I drink one for breakfast and take the rest with me for work. I also take my lunch and some yogurt and whole wheat bagel with peanut butter for later snack. I am now building some serious muscle so my weight has stayed the same. However, my clothes fit great. I can see changes already. Even though you eat so much food you don't gain weight. Everything is designed to use your metabolism to it's max.
The abs diet changes the way you'll eat forever. I found it very informative and I have recommended it to all my friends. I think the book is SUPER EASY to follow so I can't understand why the commenters above are so stumped. I was thinking of doing the online diet just to keep my progress a bit better.
It is for losing weight and maintaining weight. If you are just looking for light diet help and more exercises I recommend one of his other Abs Diet books (not the original) b/c that has diet but mostly forcuses on exercises. I forgot which one it was but you can flip through at bookstore.
ReplyHI YALL!!
So I guess I just jumped on to the wagon with you all. I just started today, this is the end of my first day and I got to say the food is still great, I get to eat more and the exercises are quite easy (and I am a girl). My husband and I are trying this out..wishes us luck.
PS: The only thing is that you need to plan your meals ahead of your day so that you can take them with you to work...that thus take time to cook and plan...but I hope it will all be worth while :) CHEERS
ReplyHi! I just finished reading the book and plan to get started ASAP. Do you all find that using the online website is really helpful for the $9.99 per month? What added bonus does it give? Thank you!
ReplyMy husband and I have been following the absdiet and we have been gaining weight and I often feel bloated and full from all the meals required. We are also working out more than what the book says to do. Is weight loss supposed to begin immediately or later on after you have gained muscle. Maybe we should give it more time or maybe we are doing something wrong. Any insight?
ReplyI too have been on the diet now for 3 weeks. My wife and I had started to gain weight in the begining but after 2 weeks it started to drop. However, my body fat was decreasing pretty fast. I have lost 5 pounds, but I only weight 173 and am 6 feet tall. I just want to get rid of the flab. My wife is 5'7'' and weighed 130, she now weights 126 and her abs are hard as a rock. This is not a quick weight loss diet, rather it is a life style change that will benifit anyone. Plus how can you get fat from eating this healthly?
ReplyHere are the costs of the 1,3 and 6 month plans:
1 month: $16.95 plus $8.95 sign up fee
3 months: $44.95
6 months: $69.95
Kind of steep but considering you have to call in to cancel something tells me that they will have a nice retention offer.
ReplyI started this diet around eight weeks ago, and I have lost 20 pounds (from starting @ 6'3 245lbs). If you stick to the book, it will work. In my case, I cheated more often than I would have liked, worked out less than recommended (maybe 2-3 times/week instead of 4 times) and went over the 'beer' limit every week! All that, and still it works. Remember, it is 3 meals, and 3 SNACKS. I found that I was full, and averaging less than 1600 cals a day. That is how it works--in the end, you are burning more cals than eating, and doing circuit weight training gets your cardio up and builds lean muscle.
ReplyMy husband and I have both been on the ABS Diet since this summer. We have 2 young kids and no problems fitting in the food. For example, my typical morning is a Peanut Butter and Jelly smoothie (yum!) for Breakfast (7 AM). I make about 2 servings so I drink that as my morning snack too (basically I drink from 7-10). I have Lunch between 11:30 and 12 (usually a sandwich or salad). Around 2pm I have a small pack of almonds, cashews, and cranberries (trader joe's sells them). We eat dinner around 6 and then if I am craving something sweet I usually much on some frosted mini wheats (trader joe kind). I am working out 3 times a week (mostly weight lifting with some endurance training). As a woman, I have lost about 5-7 lbs once I started exercising (end of Sept.). My husband on the other hand has lost an amazing amount of weight...I guess his metabolism is just better than mine :). I feel like it is working but I want to hear from other women if you are losing as fast as you want? I really only wanted to lose about 15 lbs but I seem to fluctuate by a lb or 2 on any given day...is that normal?
Replyhey! Have just started reading the book and so far so good ... but just wondering can anyone shed any light on the fact that it seems to stear away from cardio!? is it suggesting maybe 20 mins a day is enought and to concentrate more on strength training!?
Replyany help out there!?
you need a total-body workout, and I'm pretty sure it suggests at minimum 3 strength-training workouts a week (with 1 full day of rest in between). A full-body workout should only take 25-30 minutes (i.e. don't do 3 sets of 12 and wait 60 seconds between each -- it should be 2 sets of 8 at a high-intensity level with only 20 seconds of rest between sets, 30 seconds between exercises -- this will get you in gear to burn more fat faster!) You are also encouraged to do cardio on at least one additional day a week. An interval-based workout is suggested to maximize the fat loss (i.e. after a 5-minute warmup, bike/walk at 30-40% intensity for 90 seconds, then 90-95% intensity for 30 seconds, repeat 5-7 times, then cool down 6-8 minutes)
ReplyI'm very pleased with the books. The website does not work as a additional tool to the books as I expected. There are many limitations to the website and recipes that are in the books are not included on the website for the meal plans they create for you. The book and the website do not function well together. In addition, the nutritionist on the community blog that answers your questions either seems to be in a bad mood or doesn't care. Stick with the books.

I've been doing the Abs Diet for Women for two weeks now. I do not know how to cook, nor have I ever had food in my house other than a bag of pasta, a jar of sauce, some grated cheese, a carton of milk, a box of Special K Red Berries, a loaf of bread, and a tub of Becel. When I got the book and the little guide that tells you about what to eat at restaurants, I went out and bought all this food and produce. $63 for a VAT of whey powder! Then I started making food according to the directions in the book. I've never cooked before, so I'm not sure I'm doing it right.
But.
The FOOD is so BLAND. I eat mostly Thai, Indian, Japanese, and Memphis BBQ. The Smoothies suggested are just gross. They're gritty and/or tasteless and/or unbearably sour. The recipes I've tried are also tasteless. Now I have wasted all this money on food and products, and the only thing I'm keeping from this program is the exercise. Eating 5-6 times a day just doesn't fit in to my breakfast cereal/Luna bar/one meal a day at a restaurant lifestyle.
Replyis it worth it for this diet i dont know i have tried several?
Replywell the 6 meals a day is very similar to jorge cruise's 3-hour diet philosophy, basically eat every 3 hours and eat breakfast 1-hour within waking up and the last snack 2-3 hours before going to bed. The reason I think this diet may work for me is because of the exercise. I have been on numerous diets and I beleive that without any exercise it is very hard to lose weight so I am about to embark on the 6-week abs diet. Not gonna spend more money on the online thing, only thing you need is information and motivation, in my opinion. I am 145 and want to be 125, however kind of discouraged because I am a constant weight scale checker and if I don't see any weight loss I may get discouraged. I need an online buddy serious about losing weight. Anyone interested?
ReplyHi There,
ReplyI found all the comments interesting to read - I am a 5ft 2 inch woman who is naturally slender but had spent years focusing on cardio and aerobics and still found that extra bit of fat around my tummy impossible to shift. I have followed the abs diet (just also got the womens edition) for 8 months now and it has transormed my body. I am now heavier in weight than before, but its all muscle. I spend 85% of my time pumping iron and the rest maintaining cardio fitness (mainly through short sharp bursts of interval training on the days I work my upper body). one of the comments written was that the diet was common sense, and whilst I agree with that, unfortunately common sense is not common! Women in particular need to get off the cardio equipment and start challenging their muscles!! the fat will simply melt off and you are left with an incredibly toned body and a feeling of empowerement because you are stronger, leaner and much sexier than those skinny cardio queens with zero muscle tone. The diet itself is easy to follow, has something to please everyones taste buds and I dont feel like I am missing out (especially since I mix chocolate whey protein in with my cereal and shakes!!). I do suggest, for ladies who have not trained with weights, get a good body building for women book and study it - it is imperative that you know what you are doing e.g. proper posture, repetitions etc...
Would really appreciate some feedback from some ladies!!
I've been on the Abs Diet for one full week now, including the exercises. I love the book, I feel great and can tell that my body has changed shape in some way, however I still weight the same! Should I worry?
Cynthia
ReplyIt seems like the menu at the top is way too much food?
ReplyThis is the easiest and healthiest way i have ever ate. Im on a week and a 1/2 and have gained, but my clothes fit looser. I hope the scale turns around. My brother lost 7 1/2 lbs in 3 weeks and another friend lost 7 lbs in a week. I am never hungry and i've tried all the diets..
Don't forget that muscle weighs more than fat. If the scale says you're heavier but your clothes fit better than you know the extra poundage is muscle and the fat is disappearing.
ReplyI'd throw the stupid scale out and keep on going!
Amanda,
ReplyI'd love to be your weight loss buddy!
Hi, I am about to begin and could use some advice.
Could someone just go through their daily schedule including all they ate and all the exercise they did?? I am ready to start the program but am confused about quantities. (both in food and exercise amounts)
ReplyI would really appreciate any help or guidance anyone could offer...Thanks!!!
i got the book yesterday and i didnt now that much about my body so i am going to take that challenge!
Replyhi I have bought the book online and couldnt wait for it to arrive so am previewing it online. All diet principles seem similar to Patrick Holford which I found worked quite well for me however I do need to vary the recipes alot to stay interested and I am intriqued about the workouts.. I currently workout 4-6 time a week. I try to split my workouts equally between cardio and weights. I actually use itrain.com alot for workouts.. I am also only 5ft tall and 119pounds. I realised since starting weights that the scales arent the best way to assess my progress. I felt better in clothes and have more energy. However I still can't reach my ideal - ie i cant get a six pack and I want to get down to 110 pounds. I will hopefully start the plan in a week.. will stay posted..
ReplyThe "abs diet" is great. Do not come in thinking that this a typical fad diet, because it is not. This is something that you can for as long as you live since it is not based on extreme habits (eat no carbs, drinking only grapefruit juice, eating cardboard). This "diet" is based on a healthy lifestyle.
I do think that the title is misleading. First and foremost, it is not a diet, it is more of a lifestyle change. Most (if not all) of the information presented is what you already know (ie 5 servings of fruits...yada yada).
However, I think that the way it is presented and the structure/organization of the plan it suggests is great. That is the biggest contribution that this book will give you. That is why I had the most problem with. I knew I can eat healthy, just did not know how to do it. This book provides you with a meal plan and RECIPES healthy food.
The book can almost coarsely summed up in a few sentences. Follow the food pyramid, diversify your food. Cut salt and fats (saturated) to minimum. Increase protien, fiber, and water intake. Eat 6 meals per day, 3 meals and 3 snack meals. For most foods, a serving size is about the size of your fist, good rule of thumb (or fist). Of course, that was the tip of the iceberg and the book provides more detailed information.
The great thing is that just becoming educated about food helps you make healthy choices. The first thing that I looked for on nutrition labels was calories.
I now look low levels of a) sodium b) saturated/trans fat c) sugars d) ingredients (i look for corn syrup and other syrups and anything overly processed).
What I look for in healthy food is unsaturated fat, carbohydrates, protien and fiber.
If you are willing to put some effort into this, it can be done. I myself am a success story of this, going from 260 to 205 in about a year and I've been at this weight for 2 years now. I have also helped many of my family and friends begin the "abs diet" and lose weight. Total weight that has come off this book in my cohort 12 people is approximately 476 pounds! That totals the weight for 3 "healthy" adults, so tell the Census that the U.S. population went down by 3.
Final thoughts, if you do not believe in "fad diets" just do yourself a favor and don't eat fast food or overly processed foods, follow the food pyramid and get some exercise.
Replyof course you can.
ReplyBy the way this diet really works.
Dad's not a very heavy person to begin with and i watched him lose like 50lbs in less than a year.
This book saved my life. First off I am not an employee of david z.(author), or mens health(his employer). My background: In Highschool I was 5'10 167 pounds, a two sport varsity captain, 2 time state champion, recruited to numerous D1 programs and some professional leagues. I blew my knee out in a hockey game in europe, tore all the ligaments, and had a compound fracture. This was in december before i graduated. I spent the next 6 months rehabbing. This is when I started to gain some weight. I went off to college and ballooned up to 218 pounds after my freshman year of college. I gained about 50 pounds of fat in a year and a half. I found this book, and followed the diet to a T. I started light working out. Cut out alcohol, junk food, and controlled my portion size by eating about 6 meals a day. I started light lifting 3 times a week, and swimming 3 times a week. I LOST 65 pounds of fat in 2 and a half months, and gained about 15 pounds of muscle. I TRANSFORMED MY LIFE BY READING THIS BOOK. If you follow it and are honest about what you eat and what you do, you will be successful. Eating right and working out are the building blocks of loosing fat, but abs diet puts it all in a plan for you, but in the end you have to put in the work.
ReplyAbout the Abs Diet Lunches and Dinners. I noticed some doesn’t have vegetables with the meal, like for example, the “Hurry Curry” under the lunches, all it is chicken with rice, but where’s the vegetable on side?? Can you add them with that meal or just eat the Hurry Curry alone with no side of veggies??
ReplyI've been on the abs diet for about 8 weeks. I haven't actually LOST any weight, but I did a body fat analysis and my body fat has gone down by 1%, and I've put on 8 lbs of muslce. CRAZY! I went from 178 yo about 186lbs. My shoulders are huge! BTW I don't do the abs diet workouts, they're for beginners ;) I do a program from t-nation.com called "Stripped Down Hypertrophy". Its basically a few large lifts (deadlifts and squats) combined with some accessory back and chest work.
ReplyOn the Men's health website, the breakfast is so small, and the meals later in the day often seem larger. Does anybody have any input on whether or not i can eat a big breakfast and no so big of a lunch and dinner. and of course i am supplement my diet with protein after my workouts.
thanks much
ReplyI'm about to start the Abs diet for women on Monday the 5th, any success story?
ReplyWhat is the difference between the book and the online program? Is the book really that hard to follow? (I've seen a few comments that say this..) I am afraid that I will get off track if I use the online program and forget to input food, or if I can't access the internet at the exact moment I need to.
Any suggestions as to which is better?
ReplyHelp! I gained about 2-3 lbs so far my first week of Abs Diet for Women. Is this normal? I can handle not losing weight...but gaining weight? There's no way it's muscle gain already.
ReplyI just will tell you guys this, it works!!! ABS diet is the best thing on the market it dose not restrict you as much as other, it's actully so basic that when reading it you will be like jesus this is common sense. lol. I am on it and I do cheat a lot and in last 3 months I went from 237 to 200lb, and lets not even talk about how much better I feel about my self and in the gym. ABS diet is a good book and easy read as long as you wont focus on portion control it appears that everyone has that problem. Remember is not abut the size of the portion but what you put in it. If you put all the good stuff eat till you blow.
ReplyHi..guy, just for you all information. I have one friend use healthy diet system in one month she loss 10kg. Very nice...If you all want to know more, i can sharing with you all...
ReplyI love the ABS Diet. I started it in 2008 within 6 weeks I reached my goal of 187 down from 204. I was never hungry. I am still on the program in late 2009. I am not a die hard fanatic. I do Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and run 2-3 times a week each. I squeeze like 2 days of weights in a month. I am on it now at about the 60% level. I live in a country where I cant have the smoothies (no yogurt)
However my weight stays from 191-194. (194 is my max weight for the military, I am 5'11" and 42). Basically I drink the water, eat on the schedule, enjoy lots of nuts or protein bars. I do the workouts I want and make weight with no fuss. Everyone says I look great, and everyone that I tell about the ABSDIET that actually tries it becomes a convert for life.
Do the diet...I used the book...read it in less than 2 hours and stated next day.
KEYS
Eat 6 times a day: Meal 1 when you wake up + 8oz water. Eat snack one 2 hours before lunch, Eat lunch. Eat snack two 2 hours before dinner, Eat dinner, 2 hours later eat snack 3 (just a small portion if late).
Finally WORKOUT..the book wants you to lift weights because the muscle healing process burns calories for up to 48 hours after the lift...use the plan if you arent lifting now..you can be out of the gym in under 30 minutes...Be sure and use the abs diet target and dont get hungry...GOOD LUCK
ReplyOh and drink water all day..about 60 oz
