Childhood Obesity: Real Or Imagined?
There has been a lot of coverage recently over the CDC (Center for Disease Control) bungling its much reported obesity statistics. First a correction was published in the JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association). This was picked up by popular media, and then painstakingly over-examined by the Consumer Freedom site.
Now there seems to be similar sentiment in the UK with reports that childhood obesity has been overhyped and overestimated.
Researchers from the SIRC... ...concluded that the statistics showed no significant increase in the weight of children between the ages of three and 15 years old from 1995 and 2003.The report alludes to a connection between the research organization and popular food companies (Cadbury Schweppes and Kellogg's).
The UK Department Of Health:
Responding to the thinktank report, the DoH said in a statement that there was a "proven year-on-year rise in obesity amongst children under 11". It was essential to tackle this to prevent future generations becoming clinically obese and running the risk of killer disease, the statement said.
What is real and what is imagined?
