High Cholesterol Fixed By Diet Alone

Canadian researchers have proven that a diet rich in fiber and vegetables lowered cholesterol just as much as taking a statin drug (Reuters).

The portfolio [diet] was rich in soy milk, soy burgers, almonds, oats, barley, psyllium seeds, okra and eggplant.
Such a study lends even more credence to the "food as medicine" school of thought. There have been many anecdotal stories of people lowering their cholesterol through diet, but this is one of the first fully researched studies (presented in the American Journal Of Clinical Nutrition).

Prescription drugs certainly have their place, but they are often prescribed far too readily (pushed?) by pharmaceutically-sponsored physicians.

Of interest:

They tested their diet on 34 overweight men and women, comparing it with a low-fat diet and with a normal diet plus a generic statin drug, lovastatin.
This "portfolio" diet was the most successful - showing that the right fats in our diet are a GOOD thing.
