Xenical Sold Over The Counter?
In New Zealand, the diet pill Xenical will be made available over-the-counter in normal drugstores and pharmacies.
The system would work in a similar way to the emergency contraceptive pill - only trained pharmacists would be able to sell it and customers would have to have their body mass index assessed and go through a short consultation to make sure the drug was suitable.

Xenical is currently a prescription-only medicine that works by 'absorbing' a portion of fat that is eaten. Of course in reality the fat is still passed through the system. Many users of Xenical report a number of side effects - everything from an oily discharge, to lots of all round messy times on the toilet (forgive me for being frank - but this is the reality). This is exacerbated when too much fat is eaten.
Xenical is one of those drugs that do not in any way teach you good eating habits. The only thing to help you eat moderately is fear of side effects.
The decision to make this available over-the-counter is a foolish one:
Though pharmacists clearly had a vested interest in selling the drug, the Pharmacy Council had agreed to discipline anyone failing to assess and monitor customers properly... ...He was confident pharmacists would be careful with the extra responsibility. "Pharmacists are not going to sell it to anorexics. It's not in their interests to abuse it."
This will not help those who already have problems with laxative abuse. A number of groups "are concerned it will be used as medicated bulimia - encouraging binge-eating in young people.".
How this is going to help people attain good health - I don't know. Both the US and NZ already have high levels of pharmaceutical advertising on TV (I believe the laws are similar) - so Xenical would already have a high-profile.

ReplyThis article is ridiculous. Are there any drugs, prescribed or not, which do not have side-effects? If a doctor prescribed this as a medication for obesity, would those effects simply disappear?
People will attain what they wish to attain, through various sources, one way or another. It's better to encourage a safe environment rather than place the "illegal" stamp on a drug and pretend like the issue will disappear.

ReplyI use the prescription Xenical, and it works very well, but not all by itself! If you are looking for that "magic" pill that will make you lose weight without any effort on your part, you're going to be looking forever. It does NOT exist! Trust me folks, I have tried almost everything out there and no "magic" exists. I became overweight by eating too much, exercising too little, having a slow metabolism, being stuck with bad genetics, and years of DENIAL that I could do anything about it. What I know for sure is that I have not lost over 50 pounds by taking Xenical or any other pill and sitting around waiting for the fat to just go away. What I have done is use Xenical, along with Meridia, gradually increasing my physical activity, and listening to my doctor's advice. Xenical is NOT a license to eat more fat, or eat more of anything. If you want to lose weight, take a serious look in the mirror and tell that person you see how much you want to live healthy, then do it! One day at a time. Nobody or no pill can do that for you, only you can. The rest is just support, not magic.

I heard that some people who take Xenical have "accidents".
That would make me very nervous. But if it works and you need a little extra help I say go for it.
Morbid obesity (and my assumption is that's what we're discussing here) is an insidious killer and I realize (as do so many in the medical community) that people need help getting started on the road to weight loss.

ReplyI am currently taking Xenical and I love it! I lost 6 lbs in the first day alone!!!! I know that personally, if I am going to over it, I feel guilty about it because I know that with Xenical, it is going to be so much easier for me than most people. I have a disease called pseudotumor cerebri that can only go into remission if I lose a certain amount of weight and the doctors gave me Xenical to help achieve that in the fastest time possible so I know it is the best!

ReplyI have taken xenical, and it does work!! It has some unusual side effects but only if you eat what you are not suppose to eat. It is sort of negative reinforcement. It was prescribed by my doctor because I am a diabetic and as some of you may no diabetics cannot take diet pills. He prescribed this because it is the only diet medication with NO harmful side effects. I hope they do make it available in the states over the counter, I need to get rid of the baby weight I've gained with my current pregnancy!!
ReplyI would love to purchase the over the counter version of xenical when its available. xenical as i have heard many times is a wonderful diet pill theres really no need for exercise and u shed the pounds, but i do recommend exercise if u want to see incredible results..... put the problem is u need a prescription in order to purchase it, im a certified pharmacy technician and its available at most drug stores such as walgreens, but not over the counter.

Replythis sounds pretty great...i'm a 16 yr old that has difficulties losing weight. Thyroid problems seem to go around in my family too. everyday i have to wake up and suffer for being bigger than all of my friends and it's just ridiculous. now i don't completely agree with diet pills but being obese will just kill you in the long run so why not try and do something about it instead of living your life miserable and wishing you were somebody else? It makes me upset to think of these 11-13 yr olds already dealing with the pressure of weight gain. I hope they find the right solution for themselves and i wish them all good luck!
