eDiets: Are They Really Worth It?
2009 Update: eDiets is arguably the biggest name in online weight loss.
Florida-based eDiets have been around since the early days of the Internet (started in 1996), and boast an incredible amount of members - over 1.8 million (over the duration of eDiets history). They have connections in high places (including this interview with US president Bush). eDiets have been ranked as the #1 Most Trafficked Health, Fitness & Nutrition Site, and been voted "Best of the Web"in the diet and nutrition category by Forbes.
That said, what are they really like?
My impressions of signing up through their process were this:
eDiets are quite commercial - they have one of the biggest advertising budgets in the industry, and their site is heavy with graphic ads (everything from food to tampons). They also have an extensive shopping section where you can buy anything from fitness equipment to beauty products.
However what offsets this, is the incredible amount of quality content that is published within eDiets - most of it subscription-only. They have doctors, writers, nutritionists publishing many articles every day. It is truly a good place to get informed about diet and nutrition. The Internet has spoiled us with so much free information - but sometimes it is worth paying for that little bit extra.
Getting Your Profile
eDiets begins with a free diet profile, which assesses your current condition and then provides recommendations. It is at this point that they capture your email - and will send you one or more follow-up emails after completing the profile. There has been some complaints of spam from eDiets - although you can opt-out at any time (so calling it spam is inaccurate). After completing your profile, you can go ahead and subscribe (paying by credit card).eDiets have a straight subscription price for any diet: $4.49 per week - billed monthly. Note that this includes a fully-fledged fitness plan subscription as well (this used to be charged separately).
What Makes eDiets Different?
One of the biggest differences between eDiets and all their competition is the huge array of popular diet programs available. As well as the basic eDiets Weight Loss program, you can also choose from popular diets (such as Atkins, Slim-Fast, etc). However the options are always changing as brand-name deals come and go. You can change your plan at any time, or mix and match various meal and menu options. The message boards and forums at eDiets have long been thought of as the best in the industry.
Opinion
Anecdotally, eDiets works. A look around various opinion sites shows that people have lost weight with eDiets, and bad reviews are rare. The tools are good, but as time has gone on eDiets has been facing more and more competition in the online diet sector. My take: If you know what you want to do (for example; you want to follow the Glycemic Diet), then eDiets is the perfect means to do this. Menu plans, meals, recipes, motivation, will all help you succeed. However if you're unsure about exactly how you are going to lose weight, you might find eDiets a bit overwhelming - something like DietWatch or SparkPeople might be a bit easier to handle.

Responding to Complaints (June 2008)
At the beginning of 2008 eDiets (rightly or wrongly) embarked on a major upgrade to the back-end of their website. Due to a number of technical glitches there were a number of outages and eDiets received the highest amount of customer calls in their history. Things have now settled back to normal and customers should expect a good response from customer service.
2009: Meal Delivery
The eDiets meal delivery program goes from strength to strength and may well be the most popular way of losing weight at eDiets. See more about Meal Delivery here.

I, too have had problems with e-diets charging me after I told them I wanted to cancel. The customer service reps are worthless, rude, and they lie to you. I would love to be part of a class-action lawsuit against these scam artists! If anyone knows how to go about doing this, please let me know!
Replythat is crazy i am not sure when that happened to you but they have a whole new system that is very accurate now and everyone is very helpful. i was overcharged once and they fixed it right away with no issues. there meal delivery is incredible also... not sure if you tried it yet but they have a new ceo, new technology, etc... it is fantastic, affordable, and will make you successful for once in loosing weight.
ReplyI totally agree. I tried to cancel also, and they said there would be a $25 cancellation fee even though they had a clip right before I bought my useless membership. Sign me up for a class action suit. That is definitely something of which I would be a part.
ReplyI just joined e-diets. Very confused about what I paid for, logged in and discovered they didn't offer anything I didn't already know. No way would I pay $18/month for this. I immediately called and they will cancel my account, keep the 1st month's payment and waive a $25.00 cancellation fee. This is a total rip-off!! So I paid $18 to look at their site for 5 minutes! I chose the slim-fast plan. They offered nothing new. I could have read the slim fast box and came up with the same thing!!
Replyyou should try there fresh meal delivery program they have now. Yummy... and it works. they are under all new management so things are totally different
ReplyAre you a sales bot or something? That's a very useless comment. She's saying the site ad no benefit and she canceled, why would you suggest she pay to have meals delivered?
ReplyEdiets meal delivery is the most unprofessional organization I have encountered. My food was not delivered on the day specified because of a problem with Fedex. This according to them was not their fault. But I was not notified....hmmm,. They verbally confirmed they would cancel the second week and I would not have to pay for it, and would confirm that with an email . The email never came and their reps keep talking in circles.
Please be warned, this is not worth the headache.
Replythey had an old technology platform, but all issues are resolved now. i had the same issue where it was a day late and that was fed ex's problem, but now they have it under control. i have rec. it now for 3 months with no issues and lost 15 lbs so far. it is so easy and delicious.
ReplyRUN AWAY AS FAST AS YOU CAN FROM EDIETS!!!!
I had been a member of ediets since 2002 but when they changed over to their new and extremely faulty website in February of this year I realized that I was no longer willing to pay for such lousy service that they were offering. My membership was up for renewal so I requested a cancellation. The renewal went thru anyway. I called to get the renewal cancelled and have a refund issued. They did indeed cancel my membership but as of today (5/28) they still have not given me my refund $$. I've talked with them numerous times and was given the same old story from each person that they were experiencing an accounting glitch and for me to wait 7 to 10 days for the refund to process. I'd wait but nothing happened. This went on for months!!! What was I thinking to give them so much time to jerk me around?!?! When I finally called my credit card company to dispute the transaction it was too late for them to reverse the charge because of the 60-day window allowed by the card company. They suggested I contact Better Business Bureau. I was online filling out the dispute with BBB when, shockingly, an ediets representative called to say that they were going to mail a check to me today. I don't know what prompted that phone call from them but I'm giving them 3 days for that check to reach me and if it doesn't I will assume it's another jerking-me-around maneuver and I'll process my complaint with BBB.
BEWARE OF EDIETS!!! RUN RUN RUN!!! Find something else to help you. Sparkpeople.com is an excellent site and it's free. Not only is it free, it's helpful and you won't be jerked by anyone!
ReplyI agree. RUN AWAY...same problem. I cancelled last year in 08. I received an e-mail to confirm cancellation. Now! In Jan 09, they billed my again!!!
ReplyWHAT A RIP OFF!!!
I was lucky the credit card company credit my account.
I tried ediets delisously yours program in February and the food is really food, but I quit because of the computer mix ups and malfunctions. It took me almost three months to get back money THEY said they would refund to me. I just kept calling and did not give up. The last peson I spoke with I told them I would take my 19.00 (how much it costs to file in my town) and sue them in small claims court. Needless to say I had my check in less then two weeks. Also there is a Federal law that states you have 3daysto change your mind on anything that costs more the 25.00dollars. For those of you looking for a refund try that and also call your charge company they will start and investigation and if this situation is as wide spread as it appears, they will handle it post quick.
ReplyI have recently contacted eDiets representatives. Yes they experienced considerable software upgrade issues earlier in the year which affected customer service. These problems have all been rectified now and customer support should be getting back to normal.
ReplyNo, things are still terrible! I've had so many problems, it would make my fingers hurt just trying to type out everything that has happened...
I've had all of the above problems - getting billed multiple times incorrectly, missing food orders, problems with customer support.
The only thing that has improved is the rate for answering calls - at least they have fixed that problem!
Whatever...I am angry and done with eDiets.
ReplyDon't bet on it!
ReplyEvery company experiences growing pains at a certain point, no need to be so negative. I only had one weeks screw up. And they made it up to me and apologized. They have a new CEO and a new technology platform that is amazing now. Plus there food is unbeatable.
Replyi totally agree. I have had no more issues since the new system is up and running. it is great food and works if you stick to it. plus it is all FRESH... which is incredible. Nothing frozen or dehydrated...
Replyyes I agree when they were switching there technology platform to try and improve things, somethings fell thru the cracks. try it now. it is perfect... and delicious and it really works if you stay on it. also you can not go to the grocery these days and buy food as inexpensive as this costs... so convenient. my husband and i love it!! They went thru a growing phase and there were some pains but I have not had any problems since they got there new system up and running.
ReplyI signed up with the e-diets food delivery and scheduled my deliveries to start on Thursday - received my first FedEx box and started the food the next day - well it was pretty bad - first meal cheese omelet had a very long black hair in it!!! - I threw it away - and thought - well stuff happens - second meal - marsala beef w/rice - soggy at best -, third meal tuna casserole - uneatable - called to cancel on Friday - they were closed - called Saturday - closed on weekends - e-mailed them (thru their web site) canceling any future order and explained food was not up to par - no acknowledgment of e-mail - in fact they deny every receiving it - I called first thing Monday morning - was told “too late” delivery on it’s way - no way to stop it - and by the way you will be charged - Down right rude, customer service - I thought I was listening to a recording - same line over and over - from the person who answered all the way to the supervisor - absolutely no way for you to cancel your orders on-line, or change your payment information, you have to call - terrible experience - horrible customer service - in fact what I would consider NO customer service - told me they had no record of any phone calls (of course not I got a recording saying to call back when they are open) and no e-mail - I used their own form on line under “contact us” so basically they were calling me a lier - oh and when they call you back - it is listed as a “private number” so no way for you to contact them directly - just the 800 number
ReplySparkPeople Rocks and I should know.
ReplyI did e-diets for a few years, so am sorry to hear how much it has changed and sounds like it has gone down hill. I did lose weight on it but only because of the teams I was on I got support from the other dieters I had met on-line. GUESS WHAT I FOUND A BETTER SITE AND FREE AT SPARKPEOPLE!!!! I love the SPARKIES at this site. WE call ourselves SParkies because we shine we are sparking. We help and encourage each other. They help and encourage us. This site is awesome. I have my choice they will create a daily menu for me or I can log what I eat myself. I can take their menu selections and make changes. They have exercise plans, and recipes, people to contact for help. The site is awesome. I belong to a few groups or teams there. If you want to belong to some other weight loss group Spark will still welcome you. I could probably go on forever, Spark is just that wonderful. Whether or not I lose weight is up to me and no one THERE makes you feel like crap if you don't.
I did not notice the $25 cancellation fee. I cancelled after 2 weeks and it cost me $17 for the first month and a $25 cancellation fee. I now tell everyone who asks that Ediets is horrible and is very deceptive. I actually thought if I cancelled within the first month, that I would be charged just for that month. I HATE ediets.
ReplySpoke with one of your reps. this day and wanted to purchase a breakfest, lunch, dinner plus desert. She informed me that was not possible. So as of now I will not join or purchase your system unless I can try your product before comlpete purchase.
Thank you
ReplyJohn Penney
I've used E-diets in the past. I really liked it. However, I cancelled my subscription
last year (10mos ago) and I did receive a conformation cancellation.
Now, in the month of Jan 09, I received a bill of $169.00 toward my credit card. I immediately e-mailed, e-diet's and disputed the credit. (They did not respond).
I contacted the credit card company and they removed the charge.
BEWARED OF DOUBLE BILLING. READ YOUR STATEMENTS.
ReplyThere are far better programs than ediets and for far less money. I find that both Personal Dietician & Dietwatch to offer better diet programs, meal plans and support than ediets despite their so-called longevity. Ediets may be more commercially recognized (they are a corporation & therefore advertise substantially more) and while they might be bigger than either of these diet programs - if you're seeking a good diet plan AND not another social network ( i.e. facebook/myspace), than getting help from either of these sites is worth your attention. Each offers "real" dietitian support and Personal Dietitian even allows direct interactive support with their chief dietitian. Better yet each is far lower in price and offers a far more substantial diet than eDiets.com.
ReplyCanceling your membership is a nightmare.
ReplyI have been using the eDiets Digital plan for over 8 weeks now and I have lost 32 lbs with their Glycemic Impact Diet. I love it and would highly recommend it to anyone. Their menus take all the guess work out of dieting and for a little under $18 per month, I think it can't be beat. I dont have to do alot of guess work and I dont have to be a part of embarrassing meetings and weigh-ins, like when I used to be with Weight Watchers. I love them :)
ReplyI wish I had read the reviews first, because now I am fighting with the same cancellation issue that I've read so many of you have. The best advice I can give is to report to the BBB and spread the word to anyone that will listen. I had to cancel my credit card and file disputes with the company because they were so sneaky and rude!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyEDiets is a waste of money. If you're a busy professional looking for information on what's good to eat on the go and quick exercises you can do at work, then you are out of luck. eDiets is for those with a lot more free time. They are not for the working people who have to work 12 hrs a day in general and can only get to the gym once or twice a week. $17.95 is way too much for what they offer. And there is also a $25.00 cancellation fee if you cancel in the first 3 months, which should tell you something.
