Buy More Bread: The Marketing Begins
Once upon a time bread was wholesome and nutritious. These days it's a concoction of ultra-refined wheat flour, sugar, salt, and a number of other preservatives.
Now that the low-carb craze is declining, it's time for the bread makers to vie for your dollar.
As predicted in this post, the new Grains For Life campaign has begun. With the new US dietary guidelines encouraging us to eat more whole grains, bread-makers are responding.
However, note that truly whole-wheat bread without additives is actually a minority product. This won't stop the industry from confusing us all. The bread campaign is full of some incredible generalizations:
Grain products are healthy – providing good sources of vitamins, minerals, fiber and other healthy components and may reduce the risk of early mortality and chronic diseasesAaah - that means I can eat more donuts - they're a grain product aren't they?
Grain-based foods and carbohydrates actually improve emotional and mental performanceTry eating a big meal of refined carbohydrates, then see how bloated and sluggish you feel (the insulin spike).
Obesity is related to factors other than carbohydrate intake,Obesity is related to too many calories - carb, fat, or protein.
Carbohydrates are great. The processed one's are not so great. All grain products are NOT equal. This campaign is a deliberate dig against low-carb proponents. Dietary extremes are not the answer - but who will you listen to? Someone who wants your money? Or people that are actually losing their fat?
