The New York Times bestseller lists have an abundance of diet & fitness books. Out of the top 15, 6 are about dieting.

4. The South Beach Diet (90 weeks on the list!)
8. South Beach Diet Cookbook
9. The Perricone Promise
10. Total Body Makeover
13. The Abs Diet
If reading could make you lose weight, I guess we'd have no problems. However it is good to see people getting educated; although some of the books are simply clever marketing.
