VLCDs: Getting It Right

In response to this post, the VP of Marketing from Medifast responded - outlining the many advantages of the Medifast 5 and 1 program.

He points out that Medifast is NOT a Very Low Calorie Diet. According to the strict definition, this is correct. According to one of the original studies done by the American Medical Association:

...usual food intake is completely replaced by specific foods or liquid formulas containing 3350 kJ/d (800 kcal/d) or less.

This places Medifast as a Low Calorie Diet. A true VLCD would be something like The Cambridge Diet.

It is interesting to note some of the conclusions of the aforementioned study (emphasis added):

Current VLCDs are generally safe when used under proper medical supervision in moderately and severely obese patients (body mass index [weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared] > 30) and are usually effective in promoting significant short-term weight loss, with concomitant improvement in obesity-related conditions. Long-term maintenance of weight lost with VLCDs is not very satisfactory and is no better than with other forms of obesity treatment.

I am currently on a VLCD supervised by a physician. The diet is called a Protein Sparing Modified Fast and it is nothing more than 10 oz. of lean meat per day and 10 oz. of allowed veggies. Food must be carefully weight after cooking and I have seen it work first-hand. I just started 4 days ago and have already lost 8 lbs. The physician guarantees .5 lbs. per day for a woman and .8 per day for a man. It puts the body in ketosis and there is no plateau. I will be on it for about 6 months.

I have been on the vlcd for about 2 weeks now and i have lost 5 pounds of fat and not water weight i mean actual fat cells. The first two days was really hard for me but i fought through it and then the days after was a breeze. I am not currently been seen by a physician as recommended but I make sure i keep myself hydrated and full of vitamins.

I have been on a VLCD for 3½ weeks and had my first weigh-in today. I have lost 16 lbs! Unfortunately, 9 lbs was water weight, in spite of the fact that I drink 2 liters a day. Apparently that is not enough. The fat loss was just 5 lbs and some muscle was apparenty lost. Since I am over 50, apparently this is a risk. I am disappointed that I did not lose more fat, because that is what I really want to lose, right? At any rate, the loss is a noticeable loss and I feel and look much better. My next goal is to lose 10 lbs in the next three weeks before my next weigh-in.
