Happiness Does Not Equal Weight
In this heart-wrenching account of a young woman struggling with anorexia, one particular statement stands out:
They were weighed in the classroom and she was the heaviest girl and two or three boys were calling her Mr Blobby. She was quite tall for her age, and it coincided with her starting her periods.
This comment is from the (then 12 year old) girl's mother. This is the point where it all started. From this you might assume the girl was carrying a lot of fat. You would assume wrong.
Let's get some facts straight here:
Measuring weight is a poor indicator of health. Height, bone density, muscle mass, fluid retention all play a part in weight. Over any number of days, weight can vary by a number of pounds, typically as fluid levels rise and fall. In women, menstruation can also bring about fluid retention (the bloated feeling) which is often accompanied by weight gain.
All this has NOTHING to do with health or fat levels.
Comsumption of carbohydrates also play a role in weight. Most people experience rapid weight loss when suddenly dropping out carbs (as is typical in the induction phases of a number of popular diets). This is fluid loss, and will gradually be replaced as the body refuels itself.
Stop using the scales as a measure of self-esteem! Are you healthy? Are you fit? Do you have energy? These are better measures.

I really think it is important for everyone (especially teenage girls) to be notified in what is happening around the world in terms of weight. They need to realize that being thin isnt the most important thing in the world and that everyone should be happy just as they are.

ReplyWell i am 13 years old and i weight 89 pounds and i am 5'3. And all my life i have beeen the "fat" girl becasue all my friends are way skinnier than me so i have always thought i was fat! For example my friend is 5'3 just like me and we have always been the same height (she is also 13) and she weighs 80 pounds and another friend is taller than me (not sure how tall she is-guess-5'5) and she is 13 also and she weighs 79 pounds. I was just wondering if i should be considered the "fat" one in my group becasue i am bigger (weight wise) than all of my friends? Do i weigh too much or am i the right weight, i would like to know. I need to know so that i can know whether or not i should be named "fat" anymore. I would also like to loose weight so that if i am "over weight" i am not called "fat" anymore. Also what are somethings i can do to loose weight?
Lola, if you are the "fat friend" at 89 lbs, then I'd be a cow in comparison. I am 5'3" and 105 lbs. I'm also considered by my doctor to be underweight. I certainly do NOT consider myself to be fat. So if your friends are that thin, there is something seriously wrong. At 13-15 years old, you are still developing and being that underweight can seriously damage your body. Please talk to a doctor about it!

ReplySeriously, why should a 13 year care about his/her weight? You should aim to be healthy, not skinny. Talk to your doctor if you want to know if you are obese. Not someone online.

Lola: your friends are severely underweight and will have health problems because of their weight. All of you should be working on GAINING weight, not losing it.

ReplyUmmm, I am about 98 pounds at 5 feet and 3 inches. I really think I look normal, but I am unhealthy because I never exercise and my energy is short when I run.
Alexandra: You are not underweight!!! Did you have your period yet? I used to be your height and weigh the same, but then I started puberty and, bingo! I gained 10 pounds! Ironic no?
By the way, I am 13 soon to be 14.
ReplyAlexandra: you might be underweight or not - if you've already "developed", then yes, but if you still haven't, then no, you're totally ok. But definitely not overweight.
Elicia: anything from 105lb to 138lb would be in the healthy weight range, but a bit under or a bit over is usually ok too. The range is just a guideline.
matt: you're technically underweight, but like I said, these are guidelines for more adult weights, so for people who haven't developed into their adult bodies yet, it is normal to be under.

Replywendy: your weight is normal for your height. You'll probably weigh a bit more as you develop, but that will be normal too. Anything from around 100 to 135 is normal and very healthy, and so is a bit under or over if you eat good food and exercise.
Katie: first of all, the scale could be wrong. Second, it could be just bloating. Make sure to drink a lot of water and not to eat too much salt, as it is not good for your health. If you had really gained 10lb of weight, your pants wouldn't be closing right now. 10lb is around 1 dress size bigger. So don't worry about your weight, just go by your clothes and of course, eat vegetables, don't eat junk, and stay active.
ReplyHey.. I wanted to know what is the right weight for me.. Iam currently 17 years old n I am 5'7 tall.. I do not know how much I weight but it's around 153 (ppl say iit looks like i weight less).. I wanted to know if that's healthy, cuz i know i could use losing some weight, but I dont onsider my self fat.. justcurvy which gets in the way sometimes but i like having some curves so i dont wanna get bone skinny i just wanna lose a lil weight n tone up

Replyhey... i'm 16 years old and currently weigh (usually) around 96 pounds... im 5'5 and still think im fat... i see you guys writing about being like 90 pounds and i only wish i could be like that... you have no idea how much i want to weigh 90 pounds...
and btw: koo koo... for your age group (same as mine) a mile for a girl is averaged at about 10 minutes. mine is 8 minutes, but i run track...

ReplyKatie, stay active, find an activity you like, don't eat junk food, eat plenty of fruits and vegetables (but don't forget to drink skim milk, eat meat/chicken/fish, and eat whole-grain cereal like oatmeal, whole wheat bread, etc.), drink plenty of water, and you'll lose weight. You will probably grow a bit taller too and you're still developing at 13.

ReplyKatie, you could try walking. I *hate* just "going for a walk", it seems so pointless to me, so what I do is walk to run errands. You could walk to school, walk to your friends' houses (if it is too far, take a bus part of the way, but get off a couple stops sooner), offer your parents to walk to pay a bill, walk around the mall or downtown window-shopping, walk to the grocery store to buy some vegetables (when all you have in the fridge are nasty old vegetables, you don't wanna eat them). If you have a bike, you could bike to places. Again, I hate "going for a bike ride", I like to have a purpose.
If you have a PlayStation, you could play Dance Dance Revolution or similar games. You could also just play your favorite music in your room and dance around for 30m or so. Oh and offer to do the most "aerobic" errands around the house, like vaccuuming. That burns calories too. If you have a garden, you could go pull weeds out. It is good exercise for the arms (use both arms).

ReplyI used to be really big before i started competitive cheerleading. after playing this sport for a month, I lost 8 lbs. I really suggest playing a sport I f you want to lose weight because your workouts are planned for you, which is perfect for people like me because if i dont have a workout time, i dont workout. well, right now Im 13 and I weigh 124 lbs which I think is good because I have a very muscular physique. remember, weight is not important, you have to consider your water weight and muscle mass! Another good way to lose weight is to snack on friuts instead of having chips or cookies or junk food.
