Teenage Body Haters
British newspaper reports:
ONLY one in 20 teenage girls in Scotland is happy with her body, a survey has revealed. Most think they are fat and ugly and they get depressed at 'perfect-looking' celebrities.
More than half of the Scots girls surveyed, who were an average age of 14, had tried dieting at least four times.
Almost all said they would be happier if they could change their shape.
While this makes tragic reading, it's worth noting the source of the survey is UK's Bliss magazine. Bliss magazine ("the place for gossip, style, and lads") appears to be one of those trashy, superficial magazines that promulgates the very values they claim to be concerned about. One would guess that the readership of Bliss magazine would tend to be those teenagers that are already obsessed with looks and skin-deep values.
That hardly qualifies as a reliable survey - but does raise concerns over the ever increasing body image obsession. The huge number of comments on this post at diet blog make worrying reading.
Throw away the magazines folks. Every time you see a 'perfect' body staring at you from an ad - think about digital manipulation, cosmetic surgery and airbrushing.

ReplyDon't feel fat. I am a student doing my GCSE food tech coursework and i believe that no-one is fat not even that man who was half a tonne. He was beautiful and i love him, he is my idol. I am at the moment 200 pounds and it makes me feel really upset when people who are only 130 pounds say they are fat and need to lose wieght. So please for my benefit don't feel fat. Love you xxx
ReplyWell i feel very self concious about my body. I have a flat tummy which i work to get cos i do situps every night but my bum and thighs are disgusting =[ i have cellulite and it makes me depressed. Im also the type of person who adores food. So that doesnt exactly help. I lack motivation. Any ideas? x
ReplyI am 5'5 and I weigh 118 lbs! I was only 110 at the beginning of the year! I am a softball player and cheerleader. I usually either work out at the gym 30 minutes running on the arc trainer and 30 minutes ab work and weights, or I go to the batting cages and hit for an hour or pitch an hour. I seem to have gained weight the more I work out and it is driving me crazy. I don't eat badly. My mom is a health nut and she weighs like 105 and she is 5'6! I am a size 2!! and I have been a size 0 forever.... I really want to be at about 100 -105 but I can't seem to lose any more weight, I even tried a detox diet and only drank vegetable water for a week and I only lost 5 pounds but I gained it back after one s-ball game with the amount of water I drink. and I don't drink soda only water and maybe OJ 3 times a week. I don't eat dessert either except for once a week. HELP ME LOSE WEIGHT!
Replyyour average weight is 120 pounds. Don't worry. You could weigh up to 137 before your even close to over weight. Your healthy and active. Don't worry. If your a kid, your probably just going through a growth spurt, or you are losing fat weight, and gaining muscle weight.
ReplyHey, Softballer--I'm only 5'3" and I'm a distance runner and I weigh 102. I'm built pretty small, though, plus I run like 70 miles a week. It's probably not going to be possible to get down to 100 lbs at your height unless you do something stupid like stop eating. Please don't do that...118 is a perfectly good weight for you to be at, especially if you can maintain it there without starving yourself.
ReplyThe fact is society has always valued what is hard to attain. In the past, people were valued for being plump because it was a sign of prosperity. The only thing that has changed in today's society is that now the unattainable is being thin in a society that is abundant with food. It is now easy to be fat, and hard to stay thin, so that is what is valued. Few are very beautiful, most are average, so we value this beauty ideal. It won't change unfortunately. We have to be responsible for our own perceptions and not give into what others deem valuable.

I am 12 years old and rrealy need to lose weight but i cant.Every type of food i see,I always want some.I never know if i am hungry or not. I weigh 160 lbs. tht is not good. I think i should probably weigh atleast 140lbs? well.....we'll see
ReplyWhitney, it is ok to eat as much as you want as long as you are hungry (and not bored, for example). You are still growing at your age and should not try to restrict the amount of what you eat, cause that could be harmful - just try to change what you eat to get the best nutrition you can.
Try to stick to "real foods" though. For example, in nature, you find chicken, not chicken nuggets, you know? There are no Oreo cookie trees. I think just doing that, regardless of preparation of the real foods, is usually enough to make people lose weight. So even if you eat a steak fried in butter with a huge baked potato, you should lose weight just from not eating a McDonald's hamburger meal or a frozen meal.
And, of course, the usual advice: eat your fruit and veggies, don't forget the dairy (cheese counts, but eat the real thing, not those plastic-y slices), meat (can be fish, chicken, pork, etc - just not hot dogs, but a piece of a real chicken, for example), and the grains, preferably whole grains (beans, corn, potatoes count here too, not just rice, pasta, and bread), and your good fats like nuts and olive oil.
