450 Pound Weight Loss
Patrick Deuel is now returning home after losing a gobsmacking 450 pounds while in hospital.
When first admitted he weighed in at a staggering 1,072 pounds (487 kilos). The doctors placed him on a 1,200 calorie per day diet.
The maths doesn't make sense here. The article says he lost 420 pounds between June and October 26th. That's a daily calorie deficit of about 9,800 calories per day. Incredible?

Re: 450-lb weight loss and math.
The maths don't make sense because it isn't true that 3500 calories equals one pound. (Well, maybe for a blue whale or an elephant...)
There are people in this world who would gain a pound if they ate 3 calories a day more than they normally do. Maybe Patrick Deuel is one of them.
ReplyWell, you got me wondering how indeed he could have lost that much weight so fast... Here's what I think:
He lost a total of 450 lbs in 150 days. That's 3 pounds a day or , yes, about 9600 calories.
But, not all of that was fat. He lost a lot of water too. Humans are about 60% water give or take 5% or so. So of the 450 pounds he lost, 270 lbs of that was water. So he really only lost 180 pounds of fat. Still, that is 1.2 pounds per day, a huge amount.
I used an online calulator to see what the basal metabolic rate for him would be (that's how many calories it takes just to keep him alive and breathing.) Not sure if the calculation breaks down at his weight, but for a man, aged 42, assuming 5'10" and an avergae of 800 pounds, it said the basil rate is 5640 calories per day.
They fed him only 1200 cals per day, so 5640-1200=4440 cals would be his deficit assuming no exercise. That's 4440/3200=1.4 pounds of fat per day.
So seems to make sense when water is taken into account!! Thanks for pointing that out, I had never thought about it that way :)
Replycould you please exsplain how to figure what it takes to breath and just live for someone that weighs 450 pounds female I think you called it basil and the height is 5/9 so I know what is ok to take in a day and still lose weight....thank you
ReplyIf you read the article, he had 200 pounds of liquid in him due to edema.
ReplyThe article claims the hospital put him on some sort of exercise regimen, though it didn't describe what.
ReplyThat's good for him, but still horrifying. Eek.
ReplyI think this is good as it proves that losing wieght is possible whoever you are, patrick has a better quality of life (or will do)and this further emphasizes the need to be healthy.
