Ideal Body Weight - No Such Thing

NOTE: You can find an Ideal Weight Calculator here.

The scales can be a dangerous thing - the self-esteem of many people rise and fall with what they see on their scales.

Authorities have given us Ideal Body Weight and BMI charts to tell us if we are less than ideal. Can we really trust these charts?

They don't take into account any of the following:

  • Muscle mass - the same volume of muscle weighs more than the equivalent volume of flesh. This explains why some people who seem to be smaller - actually weigh more.
  • Water retention
  • Bone density
  • Genetic body type factors
  • Ethnic / racial characteristics

So-called 'ideal body weight' is just a bit unreliable! Better measures would be your overall health or fat/skinfold tests.

Weighing yourself everyday can play some real mind-games - our bodies fluctuate a couple of pounds all the time.

I am 15 yrs. old and I weigh 140 pounds. My height is 5'3" and I think I am overweight. I hate thinking about that having to lose weight but lately I've been eating junk food and things like that and I gained about 5 pounds which is why I am 140 pounds right now. What should I do?

Did any of you young ladies read the article above? Please let me summarize.. you cannot base your level of fitness on what the scale says because it doesn't tell you; 1. your muscle mass (muscle weighs more than fat), 2. your bone density or 3. how much water you are retaining that day.

Further, there is no "normal" weight for your particular age - or mine - or your mother's. There is a weight that is right for YOU as an individual and the only one who will be able to tell you, for sure what that is, is a doctor. No one on this site or any other will be able to tell you if you are over/under or at the appropriate weight because they can't SEE you! :)

Also, as I've said before, at your ages, you are still going through the stages of puberty. You haven't fully developed yet and when that happens, this bulge here or that roll there that concerns you so much, will most likely shift around to provide you with breasts, hips and a slender waist.

Please don't be so critical on yourselves. However, being a woman myself, I know the pressures of society. So.. if you are concerned to the point of distraction with your weight, please go to a doctor who can tell you your PERSONAL ideal weight range and assist you in adopting a healthy eating regimen so you won't have to spend the rest of your lives floating between this diet and that. I'm 34 now and I only wish someone had done that for me instead of putting me on a diet at the age of 9 because I was 7lbs over weight. Because here I sit, at 34 years old, still dieting. Please ask yourselves if that's what you really want for yourselves.

I wish you all the best.

~Ali

i'm a 5 foot 116ib 21 year old female i'm consider overweight by most "ideal weight" standards. i workout, eat right, and have a very lean toned body and only wear a size 1 but yet am "overweight". the number on the scale is not a measure of health and no generalized ideal standard should make you take unhealthly steps to acheive a possiblly unacheivible goal. don't diet, just make good food choices and stay active

hi, i am very self conciounce about my weight. im 5'3 and 125lbs. all my friends have either gone on a diet or are currently on one, and they all weigh less than i do. i never used to have a problem with my weight, and my mom wont let me go on a diet. am i the average weight or is it alright to loose a few(about 10-15)?

coming from someone that suffered from an eating disorder in highschool please do not look at numbers like weight and pant size as signs of health. dieting is not the answer living a healthy lifestyle is. eat right (never under 1200cals a day) making sure to get plenty of fruits and veggie eat lean proteins, good carbs and healthy fats(fat is an essential part of anyones diet)do not obsesse about what you eat if you eat something "bad" for you its okay. get some form of activity in each and everyday.do not let food and numbers rule your life its not fun

According to the Body Mass Index:

Underweight = less than 18.5
Normal weight = 18.5 - 24.9
Overweight = 25 - 29.9
Obesity = 30 or greater

You are at 19.4, which is normal weight with a tendency towards underweight.

Contrary to what was said already, BMI is actually pretty accurate for females, as they tend to have low lean muscle mass. Whereas for males, the BMI rating is often way off. Obviously, there are exceptions to every rule, but it tends to be pretty reliable for the most part. So I definately wouldn't worry about weight issues with a BMI of 19.4, although that doesn't mean you shouldn't eat healthy and stay active.

I thoroughly agree with what Jim and Alisha have said, above. Please read again what they have to say. I was in the same situation as Ali, forever dieting and worrying about my weight because I started tinkering with my calorie intake when I was a teenager. If you want to have weight problems your whole life, then by all means, ignore what Jim and Ali are saying.

Here is some good advice for teenage girls looking to lose weight, but don't want to excercise very much.

Don't eat junk food.
Don't eat candy.
Don't eat fried fast food.
Don't drink pop or diet pop.
Don't eat much desserts.
Don't eat pork.
Don't eat past 8 PM.
Drink enough water.
Eat breakfast with protein (eggs, milk, yogurt, etc.).
Don't sit down for longer than 30 minutes at a time.
Sleep 6-8 hours per night.

And Riku, 83 lbs. is tiny. It would be unhealthy to try to lose any weight.

As young as most of you girls (and boys) are, unless your doctor has told you to be concerned about you weight then you have no need to worry. This is NOT the time to start dieting. Your body is developing and needs the nourishment. PLEASE don't go on some crazy low calorie diet. Eat healthy (whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, healthy fats) and limit your sugar intake and you won't have a thing to worry about.
