Rosedale Diet - Another Low Carb Diet?
A few weeks ago I purchased a copy of the Rosedale Diet by Dr Ron Rosedale. The book describes a diet that is high in 'good' fats - low-to-moderate proteins, and very low carbs. In fact the only carbs allowed are fibrous carbs - like green veges. All grains and starchy carbs (i.e. potatoes, yams) are out.
After reading a lot of diet books - so many of them follow the same process - lots of pseudo-science, loads of recipes and meal plans, and, well, not a lot else really. A breakthrough? What do you think?

UPDATE: There is an excellent account of one persons experience (positive) with the Rosedale diet here.
UPDATE 2: Please read my comments further down. This posting was unfair to Dr Rosedale, and in hindsight I feel I was a little hasty.
Well, I back again. Noticed that I'd messed up my web-link, but I should be OK now.
Today it's been 3 weeks since I started on the "Rosedale diet", or at least on the principal of it. Haven't followed the recipes completely, but the A-list of ingredients. The result?
I'm down 11,6 lbs (5,2 kg) Wee... people are starting to notice. In addition people are starting to listen when I speak about it.
Now I'm reading "Mastering Leptin". A wonderful book, full of health details and how Leptin works in the overall automation sequence in the body. The book has 857 references to scientific papers. A "must" to read by anybody interested in the Leptin issue.
Good luck everybody.
Chilly morning hugs from -12°C Norway
ReplySorry about the many postings, but the "system" gave me an error posting, so I tried again and again.
ReplyThere's some great feedback on this diet. Thanks Bjørn for the 3 week checkup. Don't get too cold.
ReplyDay 3 for me and I'm down 3 pounds and my blood sugar is under 200 for the first time in weeks!
ReplyHi - does anyone know where to buy Rosedale's true supplement line anymore? I became his patient last summer & had good initial success on the diet & with his supplements. But his office staff had a lot of problems, and now my checks to buy supplements from his CO office are being returned by the post office - no forwarding address. His website for Rosedale Metabolics is still up, but the office phone has been disconnected. I heard through a 3rd party that Dr. Rosedale sold his supplement line but I don't know to who - I feel bad his office left so many of us hanging like this. If anyone bought or stockpiled the original Rosedale supplement line, I'd appreciate knowing where to buy more. Thanks
ReplyDay 6 - My sugars are stabilizing around 100 with higher morning counts! All praise Dr. Rosedale.
ReplyI am on the 7th day of the Rosedale Diet and I've only lost 2 lbs so far and my energy level is ok and down, ok and down. I'm 40yrs old and I don't have that much weight to lose (I'd like to lose around 15 lbs.) Why am I having problems? I've done low carbs before but felt so much worse and would only lose a few pounds before I'd stop from feeling so bad. I have a hard time with carbs so I know that I'm not meant to be on a high carb diet. Every time I did a lo-carb diet, I'd feel really bad the entire time but ever so often I'd feel pretty good and I try to find out what it was that I've done but there is no pattern I can find. I've been following the diet strictly by the book but why am I not feeling so well. Has anyone else experienced feeling bad during the first few weeks? I've done a ketone urine stick test and it shows that I'm still not burning any fat yet. I'm going to my doctors tomorrow for routine test and I'm going to try to get her to check my Leptin levels but so far they say they are unfamiliar with it. Does anyone have any words of encouragement? I really want this to work for me. Seems like everyone else is feeling and doing great with minimal problems. Is it just me?
ReplyGo to http://www.drkoop.com/tools/93/ibw.html and see what your ideal body weight should be. It may be that the 15 pounds you have to lose might be so far into your ideal weight that you'll only lose a pound or two a week until you get to your ideal weight.
I am 70 pounds overweight so the 7 pounds I lost was 10% of the amount I need to lose overall. If you lost 2 pounds of the 15 lbs you need to lose you lost something like 12.5% of what you need to lose.
I would suggest just making sure you eat a salad with every meal and drink a lot of water. The water is flushing the bad stuff out of your system and it will build up and make you feel bad if you don't get it all out. Last but not least, eat plenty of nuts. They are carrying me over. Good luck.
ReplyJames, thank you for all your info. I currently do all that except for the coconut oil. I do need to eat more fish but I've been taking fish oil supplements for over a year now and it has definitely made a difference on how I feel. Today, I felt so much better than yesterday. I'm thinking that I may have eaten something that didn't agree with me because I've been feeling pretty damn good all day today and I've retested and I'm actually burning fat!! Yeppee! Thanks again for your generous input.
ReplyMark,
Thank you for your comments. Now that you mentioned it, I haven’t been eating my salads like I used to and that always made a difference on how I felt. I do drink plenty of water as I always have and I’ve discovered that I do so much better eating raw almonds instead of roasted salted almonds/macadamia etc. One day I ate mostly the dry roasted & salted macadamia nuts that I was so bloated and felt really bad. The next day I ate no salt at all and lost all my fluid retention. Everything makes a difference. So far, I’ve been alternating “really feeling great days” with “really feeling bad days”. I write down everything I eat every day so maybe I’ll see a pattern soon. I’ve lost 3 ½ lbs in 10 days and that’s with doing no exercise because I don’t have the energy except on my good days I may be able to do a little. Thanks again Scott!! I will be sure to eat more salads now.
ReplyScott,

ReplyMy fasting numbers this morning are 173 mg/dl which I think are the lowest yet. And I weigh 257 pounds for a total of 10 pounds.
ReplyI'm just about to start the diet also. I was wondering whether those of you already following the diet are eating the low-carb bread and tortillas, and if so, 1) do you limit them, and 2) do you think other low-GI carbs like barley would be acceptable? Also, since tofu is okay, is low-carb soymilk okay? I'm not trying to change the diet but with just a wee bit more variety I know I'd be more likely to stick to it. It's kind of confusing to know what is and isn't okay... nonfat yogurt is okay but not nonfat milk... cream is okay but not full-fat cheese... it's confusing. Finally was wondering if you all are using the Splenda or not. I was playing around this afternoon and created a yummy "pudding" with almond butter, unsweetened cocoa powder, a little soy milk, and Splenda. (If I can still have my chocolate treats, I'm gonna!)
My hope is that including a lot more of the good fats in my diet will not only signal my body that it's okay to stop holding on to fat, but will also stop the near-constant hunger I feel. I can relate to whomever posted last year and said that he/she often felt in need of something but was never quite sure what it was. I think it's fat.
One more thing and I'll end this... for those that haven't made a habit of eating vegetables, especially salads, I would recommend starting slowly or you can really raise havoc with your gastrointestinal system!
ReplyBecky ~
I would HIGHLY recommend following the diet closely for the initial three weeks before you start "tinkering" with the formula...then you'll have a baseline for how you feel on the eating regimen. Truly, after the three weeks you should find such enormous relief from cravings that you may not feel the need to add the treats. For me, even adding miniscule amounts of stevia was enough to throw off my blood sugar levels, so take baby steps until you figure out what your system can handle. In any case, I think you'll be amazed if you give the Rosedale info a three week try.
Blessings!! ~(:D)
ReplyThanks for the quick feedback, Carol. I guess I can do anything for three weeks, so I'll follow your advice. Good point about establishing a baseline.
ReplyI would strongly recommend cutting out ALL sweets for the first three weeks. The sensation of sweet food is part of what can amplify your cravings. And don't be afraid of nuts. When I have hit a touch of cravings I just gobble down some pistachios and it eventually settles.
I've lost 12 pounds now. And I am off insulin. Check out my website for more details.
ReplyI was 280lbs at 5'8. I started the rosedale diet in July of '05 and by Christmas I had lost 90lbs !!!!!!!!
ReplyI went from a size 28 to a 14 !!!!!!
I have tried every other diet. You lose this weight in a better way for your body. It also comes off in a better way. When I had tried the atkins and went from 270 to 210 I was not pleased, I still looked heavy. This time whrn I was at the 270 mark and got to 210, I looked very different in a great way. Even though i'm 190 lbs, people think I weigh 140 !!!! The only excersize I ever did (and was not religious about it) was walk on the treadmill, for a total of 1hr a day, at the most 5days a week. If I could spread the word faster, I would.
Christine,
Did you take the supplements he recommends? I'm getting ready to start but can't buy all of the supplements at once. Thanks for reading.
Nancy
ReplyI do not want to send away for the "Manna from Heaven" bread. Does anyone have an alternative that could be purchased in a local type store? Is it just low carb, high fiber bread we're looking for? Do you know what's special about the "Manna from Heaven" bread?
ReplyThanks!
Kris ~
The perfect substitute is Ezekiel 4:9 bread. It is sold in the freezer section of the health food store (some large grocery chains carry it). It is made of sprouted live grains (which is why it is kept frozen until use) and is a complete protein. The sesame bread is wonderful and we are hooked on the cinnamon/raisin.
Enjoy!

ReplyResponse from Bjørn, Halden, Norway:
"I started on the Rosedale diet 3 days ago. I am diabetic II, 6' 2" and 125 kg (275 lbs). Since I can measure my blood sugar levels, I took the chance on not taking my pills from day one. Bullseye results from day one, no more peeking or low blood sugar levels. I am still reading the book and loving every bit of it as it, for the first time every, is giving me an understanding for detailed issues about diabetes, especially the dangers etc. Had I been adviced about this a few years ago I would perhaps not have gotten cataracs on both my eyes.
The weight is down 2,4 lbs the two last days and I am convinced I'm going to achieve the same good results as everyone else. My cravings almost were gone from day one, although I had a mental craving when at the grocery store last evening, but did not give in.
When I have lost 20 lbs in a few weeks, I am going to convince my son and his wife (she's Thai and makes lost of yummy, but starchy thai food) that it's time to focus on HEALTH...
I ordered three more copies of the book yesterday :-) Too bad it's not available in Norwegian yet."
Response:
Bjorn, thanks for the great information. You know, these low fat junk diets brought on by the American Diabetes Association has brought on by the food guide pyramid, and this new Rosedale diet is another prime example of why low-fat, high carb diets ruin your health.
And First off, the USDA has released this MyPyramid last year. It's a faulty pyramid enphensizing too much grains and too little protein, as well as advertising soy products that arn't good for you.
Look at what happens when cows are put in to feed lots and fed lots of grains. They get fat, and develop health problems and pus. Recent studies shown that adding grains in your diet contributes to health problems.
They say oats lowers cholesterol. That's bullcrap. Oats contain nutrients which blocks the absorbtion of some vitamins and minerals. Apples does better at lowering cholesterol than oats but does not contain harmful antinutrients. Because they say that soluable fiber is the main contributer to cholesterol and blood sugar regulation, they say that oats contain fibers that does that. Apples contain 6 grams of soluable fiber, while oats contain less than one gram per cup. Go figure.
Best of all, grains have no health benefits what so ever. They have compounds which hamber insulin sensibility. You think that the Asia diet consists of rice? The only people who eat rice is in Japan, in which these sumo wrestlers pack on rice, pasta, and corns to get fat and perform in the game. Many sumo wrestlers have health problems. But the other people in Japan only eat fruits, vegtables, fish, a variety of meats, and some ferminted soy products, and only a little bit of rice. And best of all, people who ate lots of rice and grains just have awful insulin levels, and constantly have blood sugar problems.
But the Rosedale diet emphensizes too much fat. Everybody needs moderate amounts of fat, and high amounts of fiber. Carb people can follow a low-protein high-carb diet, while protein people follow a high protein low carb diets. Diabetics are going to have to follow a high protein, low-carb diet. There's new research that it's the excessive carbs, NOT excessive proteins that causes kidney damage. Meg Poche followed a high carb, low protein diet. He got kidney stones, kidney failure, and went to a diabetic. Blame it on the faulty food guide pyramid, and these crazy USDA people who put faulty guidelines that makes us protein deficient and drowns us down with unhealthy grains. I can't believe that I see popcorn, bread, and potatoes on the pyramid. These things plump you right up.
What problems to I have now? I am developing cereal and grain cravings (These are whole grains, too.) And I have to warn everyone. Following the MyPyramid will result in grain addictions, followed by obesity, followed by diabetes. Remember, if grains fatten up the cows, it will make you fat.
ReplyEight days after starting Rosedale I am 6 lbs lighter.
ReplyI am not using supplements and I have not started exercising YET. (but will start soon)
So MANY diets say that you won't get hungery, but when you try them you find yourself starving.
I have to say that on Rosedale I did not experience hunger at all. Cravings, yes but not hunger.
This is my first posting.
ReplyStarted the rosedale 5 days ago. Have noticed the distention of my stomach not as bad.
I feel foor some days but the last 2 I have had a very spacey and tired feeling in my temples and in my sinus. ot sick- could be allergys. Any one else had or having this? I wonder if it is a sugar detox or something.
Have gout and am a cook so standing on my feet a full 8 hrs on concrete floor is very hard for me. It seems that the leg pain is lessening so far. I notice I can see my ankle bones which is good.
I dont know if I have lost wieght, I have not wieghed, Will notice in my clothes.
Seem to have a little more stamina.
Have noticed sweating around my neck area especially. I am not one to perspire easily.
Must be some type of detoxing.
Anxious to her more from this site, I think this is going to work for me.

Hi everyone! I started the Rosedale diet about a month ago and so far I have lost 14 lbs. I was put on it by my health professional. When I started my Leptin level was 62.4 (should be around 7 I am told). I haven't followed it 100% mainly because of our tight budget. My biggest problem is getting bored with the food choices. I have to admit I am not a creative cook. I am looking for receipes that are compatiable and welcome any suggestions. I am very excited to find this site, I think it will help me to stay focused.

ReplyWell, I am skeptical about this diet. It does eliminate grains (Good!), and it reduces the fruit. However, you do need some saturated fats in your diet, and don't be afraid to eat a some red meat now and then. You need to also think about B12, A, and D vitamins, and some necessary saturated fat for repairs and proper organ function. However, Rosedale is right about the grains and excessive consumption of fruits, except that I would make the fruit intake mostly on potassium-rich fruits and add some berries, with the exception of strawberries and grapes. Blueberries and açaí berries are recommended, as they are very high in antioxidents. In moderation, add a steak a week, and put a tad bit of butter on your vegtables. Have some eggs as well. As well as the macronutrients, you need to think about micronutrients. Don't go on a vegetarian diet or eat tofu. That's a no-no.
ReplyI started the rosedale diet 2 weeks on thursday and I do say the results are phenomonal!!!! I have lost a dress size in one week i feel good have lots of energy and eat less. Eating this way is really easy to follow I basically elimanated carbs from my diet before but I already ate bluberries and omega 3 organic eggs. It is the combination of food and I can eat everythign I love to eat anyways. eating this way is a keeper. I have worked out for two months and never got what I have achevied in One week. If your overweight and want to do something about it then this is the plan for you. It is easy to ,very simple, and the pounds melt off and you gain muscle. Looks like aI went to a gym and all I did was eat
ReplyThe Rosedale supplements can be purchased through Dr. Tiffany Binder. She worked with Dr. Rosedale and is taking over his patients. Her phone number is 720-299-4006. She is happy to hear from you.
ReplyI started Rosedale in March 2005 and have lost 90 pounds and achieved my goal weight for the first time in my life! I don't even look like the same person! My husband calls me his girlfriend. I found the Rosedale diet to be easy to follow and I got to eat many of my favorite foods. I ate when I was hungry, walked on the treadmill 3-4 times a week and the weight just kept coming off. I have been overweight all of my life (I'm 41)and this is the first time I've been a "normal" weight. I'm having the time of my life and recommend the Rosedale diet to everyone who wants to lose weight.
ReplyYou guys are all so inspiring. Good luck to all of you. How does the Rosedale Diet compare to the Atkins Diet? Heard so many negatives about the Atkins.
ReplyMy wife and I have been on the Rosedale diet for 4 weeks. I am down 14 pounds and she is down 10. We feel pretty good, we run out of energy at times on long bike rides, but we have started eating a few berries prior to exercise.
I am a person who was 420lbs. 8 years ago and had vertical banded gastroplasty to lose weight. It was successful and I lost 160 lbs. In the last couple of years I have put about 30 lbs back on. Even with the surgery I still had feelings of hunger. For the first time in my life I am not hungry and in fact sometimes have a hard time eating. Definitely leptin and insulin resistant and this diet has helped me.
Great Recipes:
Roasted Vegetable soup.
2 Red Peppers
1 yellow pepper
2 yellow zuchini/squash
1 egg plant
1 tomato
1 onion
I fire up the grill and roast the veggies on the grill. The peppers I have blacken the skin and then peel it off. I get a can of low sodium chicken stock, chop up some cilantro, jalapeno and the veggies. Saute in some olive oil and then add the chicken stock. I use some southwest seasonings (cumin, chilli powder etc..) to taste (salt and pepper of course). Finally I take stick blender and puree all or part of the soup. You can add black soybeans, chicken or tofu as a protein source. I garnish with a piece of avocado and cilantro.
I have more if people are interested.
Richard
ReplyI am starting the diet today. Richard, I would like some of your recipes if you don't mind. I'll keep all of you posted on my sucess!
ReplyJust started the other day. I know the first few days of a program are always magic because you are highly motivated but this program does seem to be different. The nuts, and olive oil help any salad...thank you very much.
I bought cod liver oil to help with fat burning. Alone it is not disgusting but something one looks forward to swallowing. I wouldn'y swallow a tablespoon of any oil on its own. But mixing the cod liver oil with a salad and a little olive oil is perfect!
Please keep this dialogue page going because the constant testimonials and feedback really keep me focused.
Carol
ReplyI'd love to hear from someone who has stuck with the diet and had months or even a year of time go by. Are you still looking and feeling the way you had hoped?
ReplyCarol
Are the supplements really worth doing? I'm not good at swallowing pills but if they make a HUGE difference I will. Any comments?
ReplyCarol
Five days and 6 pounds lighter! I hope this lasts but most importantly I hope that when I reach my goal that I can "satisfyingly" STAY at my goal weight. Any comments from someone who has met their goal and sustained it would be very encouraging to me.
ReplyHi, Carol ~
I've been following the Rosedale regimen for over 2 years now and it is definitely do-able long term. I look and feel like a totally different person (which is saying something at age 53). It is also a relief to be able to jazz my metabolism by taking an enjoyable walk instead of being a slave to the gym (been there done that!).
The supplements I use are modelled after the Rosedale recommendations but brands that I can afford. I find that the oils and nuts help enormously in keeping my blood sugar from nagging at me. Ezekiel 4:9 raisin cinnamon bread is a complete protein and as toast is a wonderful comfort food. Huge salads and lots of water are great for filling you up and detoxing your system.
Once you have your leptins reset this plan is a real breeze and you won't ever want to turn back!
Grins,
ReplyCarol, too
Thanks for the follow-up Carol. I too am 53 and have only 20 to 30 lbs. to lose to look "just the way I want to look", 25 is probably perfect. The first 10 are almost gone. I only have Eziekiel bread once a day every third day. I am only in week two, so I know I should be patient but if I could have a slice of Eziekiel bread every day from now on and still lose I'd be in heaven. Do you think that is wise so early in the program. Although I am still lossing I wonder if I am overdoing the nuts. I usually have 8 walnuts in my salad at lunch and both my snack mid day and afternoon (and sometimes in the evening too) is 35 or 40 pistachio nuts. What do you think?
ReplyCarol
Carol ~
I'd say nix to the pistachio nuts and stick with walnuts and almonds (you don't need more than 8 at a shot). As far as the Ezekiel goes, it's a complete protein and doesn't hit your system the way regular bread does. I've lost all my weight and maintained the loss while having two slices of Ezekiel toast for breakfast every morning.
Remember, your best friends in weight loss are lots of salads, veggies and water (and a nice walk to boost the metabolism).
Enjoy!
Carol, too
ReplyI recently purchased Dr. Rosedale's book. I have not started the diet yet. I am excited, though disappointed when I could not find the rosedale metabolics website. I did call the number for Dr. Tiffany Binder listed by Amy on this thread. Dr. Binder,N.O. could not have been nicer. She does have supplements and can do consultation on the program. Her office number in Denver is (303) 832-2080.
ReplyI'm down 13 pounds from a two week effort. Not bad, eh?
ReplyThat is with having a small glass of red wine each night and once slice of Eziekiel bread. This is all before the three week (don't break the rules) period. I am walking each day and drinking lots of water. I really hope this is the last diet I'll ever be on!
Carol
I believe this type of diet is similar to Perricone's. It is all due to inflammation which is actually a symptom for imbalanced omega fatty acids. Bottom line, reduce omega-6 (bread, potato, grains) and/ or if you can't reduce it, then increase omega-3 (organic eggs, walnuts, flax seed, chia tea). :D
