Demi Moore Goes Raw

Raw Food Diet gets plenty of attention.

Photos of a svelte over 40 Demi Moore have generated a buzz around the country about a hot diet trend she adheres to - a raw food diet. Reportedly, Woody Harrelson, Sting, and Donna Karan are also devoted raw fans.

If you want to go raw, you'll need to say goodbye to meat, dairy, baked goods, breads, and almost everything else in the grocery store. A raw food diet is a completely vegetarian diet, including no dairy, and no food is cooked above 118 degrees.

"Anyway, the raw vegan weight lifter said the body converts other things in your body into protein anyway. So, you have nothing to worry about."

Oh really? What about the essential amino acids? Your body can't manufacture them (the definition of essential).

Ryan,

Misconceptions about protein are rife, especially in the body-building arena. All the essential amino acids are present in raw vegan foods, these are then constructed into protein for/by the body. Eating actual protein is an incredibly inefficient way to get it, as the body has to expend energy breaking it down into the component amino acids, to then utilise them to build protein for the body. The meat, dairy and medical 'experts' have a lot to answer for, either ignorant or wilfully deceptive. The most efficient way to build our bodies is by eating raw vegan foods, primarily greens/salads.fruit, anything else is second rate and ultimately destructive to our health.

To those who have posted comments deriding 'raw' as the latest fad, do yourself and your body a favour by investigating further, rather than trying to make yourself feel good about eating poorly - by trashing people just because they are celebrities.

A few have commented that 'raw' is not necessarily vegan, which is why people who are actually concerned about their health and the 'health' of animals refer to their diet as 'raw vegan' ... eating raw fish/meat is as crass as eating cooked food if you're doing so for health reasons.

Raw is the simplest way to eat, the healthiest and the best for the environment, no doubt about it :-)

Another good condiment to use instead of mayonnaise is Vegenaise. I think it's made with grapeseed oil. No egg. No dairy.

There's also soy cheese, which is good.

Don't forget alfalfa sprouts (sp?) are good for vegans.

Also, for a ton of protein and fiber, eat lentils which have about 30g of protein/ fiber in 100g serving look it up on Wikipedia.com). Lentil burgers are the bomb. But you'll probably be running to the bathroom the next morning. It's especially healthy to eat after a workout. I try to eat a lentil burger for dinner after I workout in the evening. The mash the lentils, almost like a hummus, and put it in the burger. The vegan restaurant that I buy it from uses some sort of sesame whole grain/ wheat buns with vegenaise, tomatoe, alfalfa sprouts, romano lettuce and you can add onion, soy cheese and avacado, if you want.

Avacado is very, very good for you. It's LOADED with tons of nutrients. It has a lot of fat too, but it's healthy fat and remember that type of fat is good for you. You can slice it in salads, soups, sandwiches, burgers, anything or serve it as guacamole. In fact, I think I'm going to try an avocado burger on my own with lettuce, tomato, a slice of red onion, vegenaise/mayo and soy cheese.

Eggplant is a vegetarian favorite, which is a purple food. It's fattening too. Purple and dark blue foods are supposedly good for the skin and warding away wrinkles & reducing aging. Probably because it has the most antioxidants.

I just found out Gardenburger sells wraps in their dinner packages. The wraps come with fillings.

Boca vegetarian lasagna is the bomb! It is so, so delicious. I highly ecommend it, unless you want to avoid cheese. I'm not sure, but I think they use real cheese.

Vegetarian black bean burgers are really good. Organic black bean burritos or enchiladas are good. Black beans are my favorite.

I also love spicy hummus. There's a brand that sells 'Fire Hummus' in which the taste and texture is really good. Love to eat it alone. Haven't tried it as a burger or sandwich yet. Hummus is something that long time vegetarians grow up on. It's made of garbanzo beans.

I think raw dieters, clean and soak their garbanzo beans, instead of heating or boiling them. I think that's a good idea. It's just as healthy and not bad for you. I'm going to do that more often. I'll try it with lentils. You can mash the soaked garbanzo beans, after they've softened, into hummus.

Anyway, I don't cook. I buy all my food prepared. I don't even microwave anymore (which I use to do ALL the time). That means avoiding frozen foods, which are not really good for you.

By the way, white beans are good for reducing the absorption of carbs/sugar supposedly. I eat those too, sometimes with hot sauce. But the canned, seasoned kind tastes good alone, as well.

Here's some good information:

http://nov55.com/hea/food.html

They also agree with what I've been stating about good fats - the Omegas. They state it's essential for healing.

Another thing. I've changed my raw greens burrito/wrap, a little. I've changed to organic baby spinach and added red cabbage (remember purple foods are good for reducing aging effects), organic baby romaine lettuce and organic herb salad. The herb salad is something new for me. "O Organics" (yes, it's called "O Organics") is the brand I use.

The Herb salad includes organic baby lettuces (red & green romaine, red & green oak leaf, red leaf, lollo rosa, tango), organic baby spinach, organic red & green chard, organic mizuna, organic arugula, organic mache, organic frisee, organic radicchio, organic parsley, organic dill, organic cilantro.

I love, love cilantro (or eastern countries call it coriander leaves).

Now that I see this new herb salad already includes my baby spinach and romaine lettuce (did I say romano earlier? that's that italian comedian's name, lol) and practically every other green/red leaf, I think I'm just going to buy this organic herb salad from now on and put it in my wrap. That should be enough.

Kale, collard greens and mustard greens are also good for you.

Or, if the herb salad isn't available, I'll just put baby spinach, baby/romaine lettuce, and red cabbage in my wraps.

Another food item: Sabra brand sells roasted pine nuts hummus. Haven't tried it yet, but can't wait. Pine nuts supposedly reduce appetite. Either way, they're good for you.

Thought I'd also recommend this website for Raw Dieter wannabe's:

http://www.alissacohen.com/

http://www.alissacohen.com/products.html

There is a blogger on that website named "Rachel" who discusses her raw food diet in an online journal. THAT IS NOT ME! I just discovered this site.

This site sells supplements. So, I guess some Raw Dieters do use supplements. But there is another raw dieter website that says you're not supposed to have supplements. Whatever. Until I'm totally Raw, I'm continuing with my supplements. It's my only beauty regime from the inside out.

(I guess I'm posting too much or I posted something I wasn't supposed to say, cause now they're pending my posts for approval on this blog.)

Good Afternoon! Just thought I'd post what I bought late lastnight/early, early morning from two raw diet websites that I had just discovered. I spent around $171. That included those darn expensive delivery charges, especially for quicker delivery (I am not waiting two weeks for certain things that I could have the benefit of trying now - IMPATIENT, I know).

Umm, by the way, I just tried my new herb salad wrap/burrito, I just made. Ummm.... hm, well, I don't know if it was the new multi grain wrap I used or adding balsamic vinegar dressing which I don't usually use and my hollywood safflower mayo, but.... yuck. WELL, it wasn't 'yuck,' but it could have been better. Normally, I just take a spinach flavored wrap, raw prepacked baby spinach and mayo. Next time, I won't add the balasamic dressing and see how it goes. I think this herb salad is better off by itself with some dressing and croutons. But we'll see. At that point, while i was chewing on my new herb wrap, i was missing my baby spinach. Maybe mixing up greens/ leaves is not the way to go, for me. I think I'll just do one kind of leaf at a time in my wraps and no more dressing and maybe I'll switch back to my spinach flavored wrap.

The one thing I was a little pissed off about this website was the delivery schedule. I ordered it early on 9/12/06 and she's not going to ship it until September 19th? Unless, I'm mistaken and they meant that it's scheduled for me to receive it BY the 19th. Because if she's not going to begin sending out my items until a WEEK after I placed my order, and I requested for regular delivery, that means it may take close to 3 weeks for me to get my order! THAT'S RIDICULOUS! I mean I can wait one or two weeks, but even two weeks is way too long. Waiting over 14 days (business days or not) is way too much! But the items i ordered from Alissa are things that I can wait for and am not impatient to try.

Also, the other thing is, when I was reading her website, I kinda felt like she couldn't be trusted. Maybe it's women's intuition, but my psychic abilities tell me this woman could potentially pull one over me. That's what I got from reading her website. I've dealt with internet business women like that before, and I just don't trust them. They're just mean. Internet businesses, mainly the ones owned and operated by one person, are something that you should be careful about. NO matter how professional looking or sounding the website is or how many millions they make.

HERE ARE THE ITEMS I ORDERED FROM ALISSACOHEN.COM:

Someone asked earlier how you can get amino acids from a Raw Food Diet. Well, things like the goji berry and other raw foods supposedly provide a really high amino acid count. You just gotta look this stuff up. I don't know if it helps, but looking at photos of raw food dieters, THEY'RE ALL MUSCULAR! Or quite a few of them atleast.

Then I went on rawganique.com. They sold black sesame seeds called Tahini which is supposedly good for hair growth and texture. I had never heard of black sesame seeds, until i got on this website and then researched it a little on a couple other sites. They supposedly use it alot in Asia or Chinese herbal medicine, especially for the hair.

Rawganique.com is based in Canada. Hence the name Rawgani "-que". It's raw organic or "organique" (french-canadian word?) stuff. They sell alot of things. The one thing I liked about this website was that it looked professional, they sold a bulk variety of stuff, they sounded trustedworthy (and I emphasize the word "sounded" - so you never know), their tone seemed nicer, and MAINLY because they provided alot of detailed info (not enough on some products though) that you needed to know about this stuff. That's what I always look for. The FACTS! Or so called facts.

HERE'S WHAT I BOUGHT FROM RAWGANIQUE.COM:

FD506 Raw Organic Black Sesame Tahini [8oz] $13
{Raw Organic Black Sesame Tahini is naturally high in calcium and iron, both in highly digestible form. Black Sesame has long been used in Chinese medicine to purify the bloodstream and the digestive system as well as to main overall health, especially in women.}

FD908 Raw Organic Olive Paste [7.21oz/200g] $9
{Though classified as a black olive, the Botija olives are actually a vibrant purplish red in color when cured. Perfect for quick salad dressings, spreads, dips, sauces, and soups. The premium organic black Botija olives in this raw organic olive paste are grown on coastal desert plains of southern Peru, perfected through 400 years of selection and family traditions.}

Saladacco $30
{Raw cuisine made easy and perfect with Saladacco, aka Spiralizer or Spiral Slicer. Transform zucchini, carrots, cucumbers into raw broad or angel hair-like pasta, with the texture and taste of the real thing. So, basically you're taking vegetables and turning them into pasta, without the flour. So, they're actual pasta made of vegetables. This is good for people who don't like biting into whole vegetables. It makes it easier and more creative for you to eat. For recipe ideas, visit their free Recipes section. Rawganique.com's Angel Hair Zucchini-Spaghetti with Peppery Alfredo Sauce.}

FD106 Raw Organic Hemp Protein Powder [1lb jar] $17.25
(At almost 40% protein content, their highly soluble raw & organic hemp protein powder is the answer to raw athletes' and bodybuilders' for a raw, vegan, and organic muscle builder and energy booster.)

FD10X Raw Organic Hemp Seed Oil [FD102-250 - 250 ml/8.8oz] $14
{Their oil supposedly contains almost 5% GLA compared to the normal GLA content of 2%. Hempseed oil is among the lowest in saturated fats at 8% of total oil volume. The essential fatty acids in hemp oil were used by Dr. Joanna Budwig, nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize every year since 1979, to successfully treat "terminal" cancer patients, as well as those suffering from cardiovascular disease, glandular atrophy, gall stones, kidney degeneration, acne, dry skin, menstrual problems and immune deficiency. Hemp oil and infants: EFA's, Essential Fatty Acids, are essential to the development of the pre and post-natal baby. When LA or omega-3 is deficient in a child's diet, growth is slowed, especially in the brain, and skin problems occur, such as eczema and rashes. Colic and diarrhea are also more common. It also contains Chloraphyll which is good for you. Use it in salads and dishes or take it like I do, and just have spoonful before a workout.}

Shipping cost: USD$ 22.53
Subtotal: USD$ 105.78
Total: USD$ 105.78

By the way, none of these hemp products have the marijuana (cannabis) drug chemical in it. Sorry! LOL...

I also noticed Rawganique.com sells Hearts of Palm. I kept seeing a can of it at my grocer's, and was always curious as to what it was. Thought it was related to artichokes or something. Then I did a little research. It is the soft center of a part of a palm tree. People slice it up into a salad and it supposedly has a smooth texture and looks like mozzarella sticks. When they make this salad, they call it the "Millionaire's Salad."
Instead of ordering it from Rawganique, I bought a jar of it from my grocer's (brand is called Gourmet, but there's also California Girl's brand or something like that in a can, but I wanted the jar - easier to keep). I don't know what the nutritional value is, but it has fiber. Let me try it and i'll get back to you. You know me and vegetables.

I also bought a jar of artichoke hearts, these Mezzetta greek olives (soaked in red wine vinegar), and alot of other Mezzetta products. I didn't know olives was a good part of the raw food diet. I never use to really like any olive. I just liked olives and started eating them more this year as a snack and for a little nutrition. I don't like black olives though.

I'd also like to recommend Haagan Daaz Mayan Chocolate icecream. It's a fairly new product and tends to run out at few stores. Mayan chocolate is supposedly better for you. Haven't bought it yet, but will let oyu know how it is. And I KNOW, I KNOW... I said I wouldn't touch dairy, but I wanna try it.

I am also going to try Godiva dark chocolate icecream. I've had chocolate icecream, but never dark chocolate icecream. I'll probably have a spoonful a day and that's it. Will try not to buy it afterwards, cause of the dairy. Same goes for the haagan daaz mayan icecream, when i purchase it after I finisg the godiva one.

I also am going to purchase Godiva dark chocolate squares with Cacao in it (in a red bag). Cacao is very good for you and your heart.

I think one of the exceptions I'm going to make to my vegan diet sometimes is dark chocolate, because it's very good for you and it can give me a little boost of energy too when I need it, especially in the evenings or on fasting days, when I really need some energy.

Oh and another tip. You can add protein powders to food, like you would seasoning. So, you don't have to just put it in shakes or smoothies. Add a little to yogurt, for example, for exrta protein in your diet. Protein helps you to lose weight and gives you more energy. That's why alot of celebrity trainers and these zone dieters say you should eat a little protein at every meal.

UH OH! FORGET ABOUT PREPACKED BAGGED SPINACH:

http://articles.news.aol.com/news/_a/e-coli-cases-traced-to-bagged-spinach/20060914195709990002?ncid=NWS00010000000001

But the Organic leafy greens that I just bought recently come in plastic containers though. I wonder if the "organic" part and the containers make a difference. Because the Food & Drug administration said E.Coli bacteria was found in BAGGED spinach only. I don't think they mentioned anything else. And I eat BABY spinach.

I could just avoid spinach altogether, which would include my herb salad as well which contains baby spinach.

This sucks! That was my main healthy light leafy green meal for the day! My baby spinach/ leafy green burritos/wraps, that is. I eat other healthy as well as vegan foods. But that's not enough. They can be loaded with carbs. And I wanted one light salad-like lunch. And, no, I'm not really prone to eating salads. Although, that would probably be out of the question too. Depending on what kind of salad you order. And plain old lettuce is just not enough.

GOSH, DARN IT!

Rachel, I'm just as mad as you about the spinach recall. Fortunately for me, I'm a microbiologist. I took some of my spinach to work and tested it for E. coli/coliforms and it's definitely not in mine. I think it's universal, for baby spinach and regular. I'd be safe and toss it anyway until the retest is finished and they get safe spinach back. I love my spinach salads though...it's one of the healthiest greens out there. Why couldn't there have been a recall on Doritos or something?

Hi,

I tried two of Alissa Cohen's products. I was very pleased, when I opened her package that not only did I receive it on time as she indicated in her email confirmation regarding the date of delivery, but also because her products were packaged VERY nicely and securely!

Now as for how the products tasted. Well... let's just say, don't get your hopes up... or shall I say your taste buds up. But it does take a little getting use to and it is HOW you eat them that you need to realize that it may be okay to eat. When I tried the dried Goji berries (and I hate raisins or any dried fruit), which were packaged very nicely to keep it fresh, I took a handful, put it in my mouth and it tasted like cardboard. But that was the other day. Today, I decided not to take a whole bunch of them, like a spoonful, and stick it in my mouth all at once like that. I took a couple berries at a time, popping them in my mouth like candy, in all a hand or spoonful, and the berries tasted better. It was easier to consume, as far as taste went.

I didn't even try the dry coconut oil. I didn't even open the jar. I was disappointed the first day I tried the other two products, that I couldn't bring my taste buds to try the jar of coconut cream. But when I do, and patience is the key to everything, then I will let you know.

Now, as for the other product... the cayenne cacao. I was a little surprised what I saw when I opened the jar. It wasn't like cocoa powder, that's for sure. It was like molasses or frosting. But it sure didn't taste like frosting. I think it was the cayenne. Next time, I'll order it without the cayenne. The directions on its jar says to mix it in some warm beverage, like tea or coffee, but I don't drink warm stuff, remember? So, I just took a spoon and had a little. Like I said, it really didn't taste that good. But I told you to change the way to eat it and maybe the next day it will taste better. So, after keeping it in the fridge, the next day the texture was a little harder, but with my finger I ate it like a kid would with frosting, and it actually tasted better and easier to consume, for my sensitive mouth that is.

I am like a kid when it comes to trying new things. I love food, and i love trying different restaurants. But if it's not to my liking, I'll feel nauseous immediately. That's why I have trouble eating vegetables. They're just so yucky because I am so use to good, tasteful food. Mainly, if it's cooked with salt, I'll eat it. Luckily for me, I do not have a strong sweet tooth (i don't even eat much fruit or candy), but once in a while a chocolate craving will kick in. But I attribute that to my caffeine addiction (although I am not as bad as some people - you need to control yourself a little).

Oh and I forgot, I tried the oatmeal. Let's just say, don't eat it after soaking it for one hour only. Altough it does get softer and it is not that bad, it is probably better to soak it overnight. It of course has no flavor that most people would like, unless you add something. Add hazelnut/almond/oat (vanilla/chocolate flavored too) milk and/or honey and/or cacoa (don't know if it'll abosrb well) and eat it with the oatmeal. It maybe better. But the key is probably to soak it overnight first. Will let you know how it tastes.

Peace out, health freak wannabes (if you're reading this)!

Well, I was right about soy. I don't trust it. Here is an email I received from a UK editor that works for Agora Health (you should sign up for it):

Subject: The low down on soy

What you don't know CAN hurt you. And what most
people don't know about soy is that if it's not
properly processed, it's a far cry from the "health
food" item that many food manufacturers would have
you believe.

*********************************
Every last word
*********************************

Dark soy sauce may offer more antioxidant protection
than red wine or vitamin C. In fact, the
antioxidants in vitamin C may be far less potent
than the antioxidants in soy sauce.

Those are the surprising results of a study from
researchers at the National University of Singapore
(NUS). The NUS team also reports that blood flow
might improve by about 50 percent for a few hours
immediately following the consumption of soy sauce.

In a Reuters report about the study, NUS researcher
Barry Halliwell noted that that soy sauce has a
preventive aspect that could, "slow down the rate of
cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases."

Sounds pretty impressive. And you can imagine that
those who read the Reuters report might be inclined
to up their consumption of soy sauce. But if they
do, I hope they didn't miss one very important word:
fermented.

*********************************
Hard facts

The Reuters article states: "Soy sauce (US) or soya

beans), roasted grain, water and salt..."
Unfortunately, that comment might lead many readers
to believe that the soy sauce at their local
supermarket is the same soy sauce described by NUS
researchers. But in most cases it's not. Not even

In a groundbreaking article about soy titled "The
Ploy of Soy," Sally Fallon and Mary G Enig, Ph.D.,
of the Weston A. Price Foundation (a pro-raw dairy
group), put the nutritional realities of soy
consumption into perspective - a perspective you
won't find anywhere in the mainstream. Here are a
few of the key points they make:

* Soybeans contain "antinutrients" that inhibit
enzymes needed for protein digestion and amino
acid uptake
* Soybeans contain haemaglutinin, a substance
that promotes the clotting of red blood cells
* Soybean haemaglutinin and enzyme inhibitors
are deactivated during the fermentation
process
* Enzyme inhibitors are reduced in bean curd and
tofu, but not completely eliminated
* Soybeans are high in phytic acid; an organic
acid that impedes the absorption of four key
minerals: calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc
* The phytic acid content of soybeans can only
be reduced by a long fermentation period
* When vegetarians substitute dairy products and
meat with bean curd and tofu, they may risk
mineral deficiencies
* Fermented soy products - such as miso and
tempeh - provide nutrients that are easily
absorbed

Soy intake may also increase kidney stone risk. A
2001 study published in the Journal of Agricultural
and Food Chemistry, showed how soybeans, tofu, and
commercially processed soy products - especially
textured soy protein - contain extremely high levels
of oxalate, a compound that binds with calcium in
the kidneys, increasing the risk of kidney stone
development.

It can't be said often enough: Soy is not health
food. For more eye-opening details about soy, you
can read "The Ploy of Soy" at the Weston A. Price
web site: westonaprice.org.

And another thing

Are you trying to quit smoking? Or do you have a
friend or family member who's trying to quit? If so,
I've got some good news and some bad news.

First the good news (such as it is): Another
excellent item has been added to the list of Good
Reasons to Quit Smoking. A new study reveals that
the nicotine content in more than 50 different
brands of cigarettes is about 10 percent higher than
it was eight years ago, according to a report in the
Washington Post.

The bad news - same as the good news: The nicotine
content in more than 50 different brands of
cigarettes is about 10 percent higher than it was
eight years ago. And that will probably make it much
harder to quit.

Reginald V. Fant - a clinical pharmacologist and
nicotine expert with an independent consulting firm
- told US newspaper the Post, "We know that
physiologically the changes in the nicotine
receptors in the brain are related to the amount of
nicotine consumed."

The rise in nicotine levels was discovered in a
Massachusetts Department of Public Health study that
examined 116 cigarette brands from 1998 to 2004.

Matthew L. Myers called the reports "stunning."
Myers is president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free
Kids. He told the Post that the consistency of the
nicotine increase, "leads to the conclusion that it
has to have been conscious and deliberate."

Well, I tried the Rawganique.com products and they were great. The olive paste was delicious. The hemp protein powder was surprisingly good and is very nutritious with loads of amino acids. And the Hemp seed oil was the best one because swallowing a capful of that was so easy. It was the best oil that i've ever had. Anyone who has swallowed oil before knows what I mean. This hemp seed oil was very thin and did not have any bad flavor left in the mouth. These hemp products are green too, almost like Spirulina. So, it should be even more good for you. The Tahini black sesame paste was something that did not taste awful, but it is not something you might want to eat too much of alone. First off, the color is black, so that alone sets your mind up to not like it. But there was no really bad flavor or texture. But it was tasteless. I would only eat it if i mixed it with something else or added to something, like a vegan burger. But my favorite out of all of the flavors was the olive paste. If you've had Indian spicy pickle, it tastes like that, but without the spice or hotness. This could be considered like a chutney even. It's definitely something I could add to rice or a cracker or bread or something else. Or even pasta. It was very good. Tangy with a kick. And healthy for you!

So far, AlissaCohen.com and Rawganique.com have not totally disappointed. Although, the Alissa Cohen products I have not touched that much.

I am now trying to avoid all sugar. So no more cacao, raw honey, dark chocolate or even fruit. I am also trying to eat vegan stuff with a low (GI) glycemic index. I just never really liked sweet stuff to begin with. Not that I hate it, but i am defintely thankful that I do not have a serious sweet tooth. Plus, diabetes runs in my family, so I better avoid it anyhow. And as far as fruit goes, I just don't like fruit. I'll try and eat bananas though, because of the potassium level. Potassium, I think, is good for people with high blood pressure maybe (which also runs in my family) and it's maybe good for working out, for the muscles. And bananas are just tasty by themselves, for me. They're texture reminds me of icecream.

I just also want to recommend an energy bar: Snickers Marathon Energy Bar. This is the best energy bar I have ever tasted in my life. It has a low glycemic index, 5g fiber, 12g sugar, 2g sugar alcohol, 24g carbs and 10g protein and has vitamins. It does not taste awful at all like other energy bars and shakes. You don't taste the vitamins and it's not too sweet. It tasted exactly like eating a Snickers Krunch bar. And it did not become too hard and stiff when I kept it on the top shelf of my fridge. I give this energy bar an A+. Love, love it!

The Dangerous Drug-Herb Interactions You Need to Know About
Oct-2-2006

(BlackDoctor.org) -- The news of football player Terrell Owens’ being rushed to the hospital made headlines all around the country. Reportedly, Owens experienced a bad reaction after taking prescription pain medication along with his regular natural supplements. This is a good opportunity to share some examples of known interactions between popular herbs, foods, and prescription and over-the-counter drugs.

Hawthorn is known to be effective in reducing angina attacks by lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels, but should never be taken with medication prescribed for most heart ailments. The mix can lower your heart rate too much, causing blood to pool, bringing on possible heart failure.

Ginseng, according to research, can increase blood pressure, making it dangerous for those trying to keep their blood pressure under control. When taken with the blood-thinning drug Coumadin, ginseng, garlic or supplements containing ginger, can cause bleeding episodes. Long-term use of ginseng may cause menstrual abnormalities and breast tenderness in some women. Ginseng is not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.
Garlic capsules combined with diabetes medication can cause a dangerous decrease in blood sugars. Garlic has anti-clotting properties. You should check with your doctor if you are taking anticoagulant drugs.

Goldenseal raises blood pressure, complicating treatment for those taking anti-hypertensive medications, especially beta-blockers. For patients taking medication to control diabetes or kidney disease, this herb can cause dangerous electrolyte imbalance. Not recommended for pregnant or lactating women.

Feverfew, believed to be the natural remedy for migraine headaches, should never be taken with other migraine medications. It can cause the patient's heart rate and blood pressure to rise to dangerous levels.
Kava, an herb that has anti-anxiety, pain relieving, muscle relaxing and anticonvulsant effects, should not be taken together with substances that also act on the central nervous system, such as alcohol, barbiturates, anti-depressants, and anti-psychotic drugs.

St. John's Wort is a popular herb used for the treatment of mild depression. The active ingredient of St. John's Wort is hypericin. Hypericin is believed to exert an effect on the brain similar to that of monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, found in major antidepressants. Mixing MAO inhibitors with foods high in tyramine, an amino acid, produces one of the most dramatic and dangerous food-drug interactions. Symptoms, which can occur within minutes of ingesting such foods while taking an MAO inhibitor, can include rapid rise in blood pressure, a severe headache and even death. Foods high in tyramine includeL aged cheese, chicken liver, red wines, yeast extracts, bologna (and other processed meats), dried or pickled fish, legumes, soy sauce, ale, and beer.

White Willow, an herb traditionally used for fever, headache, pain, and rheumatic complaints may lead to gastrointestinal irritation, if used for a long time. It exhibits similar reactions as aspirin (aspirin is derived from white willow). Long-term use may lead to stomach ulcers. Drug interaction risk isn't limited to herbal supplements. Certain foods can interact with medications.

Grapefruit juice interacts with calcium channel blockers, cholesterol control medications, some psychiatric medications, estrogen, oral contraceptives and many allergy medications. The juice modifies the body's way of metabolizing the medication, affecting the liver's ability to work the drug through a person's system.

Orange juice shouldn't be consumed with antacids containing aluminum. The juice increases the absorption of the aluminum. Orange Juice and milk should be avoided when taking antibiotics. The juice's acidity decreases the effectiveness of antibiotics, as does milk.

Leafy green vegetables, high in vitamin K, should not be consumed in great quantities while taking Coumadin. These vegetables could totally negate the affects of the drug and cause blood clotting.

Caffeinated beverages and asthma drugs taken together can cause excessive excitability. Those taking Tagament (Simetidine), quinolone antibiotics (Cipro, Penetrex, Noroxin) and even oral contraceptives should be aware these drugs may cause their cup of coffee to give them more of a java jolt than they expected.

Grilled meat can lead to problems for those on asthma medications. The chemical compounds formed when meat is grilled prevent this type of medication from working effectively, increasing the possibility of an unmanageable asthma attack.
A diet high in fat while taking anti-inflammatory and arthritis medications can cause kidney damage and can leave the patient feeling, drowsy and sedated.

Alcoholic beverages tend to increase the depressive effects of medications such as benzodiazepines, antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, muscle relaxants, narcotics, or any drug with sedative actions.

Antioxidant and beta-carotene intensify alcohol's effect on the liver.

Aspirin can modify the effectiveness of arthritis medications, strong prescription steroids and diuretics. Combining aspirin with diabetic medications can drop blood sugars to dangerous levels. Aspirin can also cause toxicity when taken with glaucoma and anticonvulsant (anti-seizure) drugs and cause bleeding episodes when combined with a blood thinner, like Coumadin.

Acetaminophen can also cause interaction complications when overused. Heavy drinkers who take acetaminophen for hangover relief risk liver damage. Taking high doses of acetaminophen with Coumadin can cause bleeding episodes.

Antacids taken with antibiotics, heart and blood pressure or thyroid medications can decrease drug absorption by up to 90 percent.
Antihistamines like Actifed, Theraflu, Dimetapp, Benadryl and Comtrex should be avoided if you are taking anti anxiety or antidepressant medications.

Turnips contain two substances that can interfere with the thyroid gland's ability to make its hormones. They can promote development of a goiter (an enlarged thyroid) in persons with thyroid disease.

Remember, I’m not a doctor. I just sound like one. Take good care of yourself and live the best life possible.

4 Superfoods African Americans Need to Fight Disease
Oct-4-2006

(BlackDoctor.org) – Lately, there has been a lot a talk about superfoods. Not only are these nutrient-packed foods great for your health, but they may also help you to fight off such diseases as heart disease, cancer and much more. Some of these foods include beans, blueberries, soy, spinach, walnuts and oats. And now, it seems there are a few more to add on to this continually growing list. Take a look at the following to find out what nutrients the latest superfoods provide:

Pomegranate This red jeweled fruit contains 3 times more antioxidant power than either green tea or red wine. To get your daily intake, try sprinkling a few of these delicious berries onto a salad.
Acai This Brazilian berry contains 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times more anthocyanin than red wine. It is also loaded with vitamin A, C, and omega fatty acids 6 and 9, just to name a few. Check out the growing number of smoothies and other healthy drinks that now offer acai as an ingredient.

Goji This fruit is high in antioxidants and contains all 8 essential amino acids. These berries also contain vitamins B1, B2, B6 and vitamin E.

Quinoa This whole grain contains all 8 essential amino acids and many B vitamins as well. Try adding it to a soup or a batch of muffins.

For those people who say this is just a fad diet, I ask you to please look at the website www.thegardendiet.com It is about a raw vegan family who have raised their children on raw food. The father, Storm, is 58 years old and he honestly looks about 25 or so, no wrinkles, amzing body, completely healthy. They are not rich like "the celebrities," but they do manage to feed a family of six with only raw foods, and run a website, food channel in the process. Check it out, it's amazing.

And please don't dismiss what you have no idea about, except for reading one article stub about one person who does it. Research it before you condemn it.

Plus, the reason why our doctors, who are sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, don't reccomend it is because they would probably lose alot of their patients and business, which equals money. Think about it, if everyone went on the raw vegan diet, and experienced the benefits such as no sickness, weight loss, complete health, clear skin, etc. then you've just eliminated about 87% of the business doctors get. There would be nobody to come to the hospitals except for checkups and trauma. And there would be no one to take all those medications if no one needed them, which pharmaceutical companies would never allow. Dairy products, for example, are mostly sponsored by pharmaceutical companies, as are meat products. They know America's helath crisis, and they thrive on it. Most of the ads that tell you you need this or that or serious consquences will happen, some drug company sponsors that.

P.S. If you are worried about the cost, many people don't take into consideration that if they go raw vegan, they will not be eating anyhting they ate before, aside from any fruit and vegetables. You think it will be insanely expensive, but it really isn't. You won't be eating as much as you eat now, so you won't need as much. It might be a little costlier than what you normally buy, but it will save you money in the long run because after a few months you will not be buying any medications, supplements, skin or acne products, headache medication, diet pills, makeup (you don't need alot if you have beautiful skin), moisutizers, hair treatments- there are untold benefits to doing this. Everyhting you never thought twice about buying before, becuase you just assumed you needed it, you will second guess. It might be rough for a little bit to make ends meet, but as you get healthier, the less other shit you'll need. I also encourage you, once you start the diet, to wean yourself off any skin medications you might use, because your skin is addicted to them ( just look at the back,, they contain untold chemicals and additives). You may break out for awhile, but don't worry, just suffer through that, and DO NOT COVER THEM WITH MAKEUP OR PICK AT THEM. That will cause scarring and more acne. Just wash your face with water three times a day or so. Just so youre not tempted, throw your skin shit out. Then, slowly, the acne/redness/whatever will start disappearing, and as you continue your diet, they will disapear completely and you will forget you ever had a skin problem. And even if you don't do this diet, or you fall off the wagon, don't start using your skin products again. Find a product that doesn't use harsh chemicals to clean your face. (Most people don't know that they destroy the top layer of skin, which is a temporary solution, but lead to increased wrinkles when your older because the body doesn't have the oil to prevent it.) I reccomend Burt's Bees.

Good luck, everyone.

*** This may not be the case for everyone; this will only happen if you throughuly reasearch what you are doing and make sure you are getting everything you will need. Also, you may go theough a detoxification of your system if you rely heavily on meat or food with alot of preservatives, like junk food in your diet. This is normal; your body is ridding itself of all the wastes you put into it, and is basically going through withdrawl from the addictive foods you eat. For a few days you may experience a headache, vomiting, diarhhea, etc. but it will pass and you will emerge from the other side reborn.

Also, I would not reccomend supplements. And what "Rachel Raw" seems to be so fond of, all these "healthy" prepackaged foods are actually not good for you, no matter what they say. Sitck to this rule of thumb: the less it lasts, you better it is for you. Organic produce for example only lasts a few days. If you want sprout, don't buy them from a grocery store, make them yourself. The more involved you are in making your food, the better off you are.

Also, invest in a juicer. They are AMAZING. You get like 600% more nutrients than from eating the fruit or vegtable alone. Not that you don't want to only eat juiced produce, but I would juice at least a full glass a day of whatever. It really is amazing, so much energy.

And also, would Rachel Raw please refrain from writing everyhting she has ever bought. I mean, I'm sorry to critisize you, but it is a tad annoying to record your purchases on a blog. No one really cares that much, Most of your opinions are great, though. Just make it a bit more to the point next time. You want to capture the reader's attention, not bore them to death. Sorry to be mean and thank you.

This topic is officially my favorite DB topic now. "The body converts whatever you eat into protein", "eggplants are fattening", "600% more nutrients from a juicer than from eating the fruit or vegetable", the conspiracy theories about pharmaceutical companies sponsoring dairy and meat... good stuff.

Also Raw

Death is only the smallest part of life. To allow an animal the freedom to move in open air and sunshine, eat according to its evolutionary requirements, and love and reproduce, before ending its existence in the most succint and humane manner, is the natural order of the universe. We must also eat according to our evolutionary needs (or our God given body's innate requirements, if you are religious). To do otherwise is to invite disaster upon yourself and those you love, and, most importantly, to your children's future health, if you are even fit to reproduce. My family and I are also raw foodists. I was a vegetarian for two years and a vegan for another year. I ate vegetables and fruits, nuts and seeds, some tofu, abhorred junk food, and didn't smoke except occasional marijuana. It nearly killed me, and I underwent a lengthy recovery period, including a week in the hospital at the age of 20. Ten years later, and several dietary experiments later, I am two and a half years into a raw animal and vegetable foods, including raw honey (not simply unpasteurised). My health and vitality is beginning to approach that which I experienced in childhood, when good health and energy are taken for granted. I don't feel sorry for the animals I eat. Because I only eat free range, organic meat, I know that they have had as good a life as is possible for such a creature. Probably a great deal better than many of ours. We need not fear their brief death experience, just as we need not fear our own. We deserve to be healthy. Our children deserve to be healthy.

I feel that the most important thing to eat, not only during pregnancy, but always, is an abundance of fresh greens. Green is the best. It cleanses, gives lots of high quality protein, and is plenty of fiber. You will see when you start doing this. Also, limit or stop dairy products while pregnant, as it just makes lots of mucus for the baby to deal with. I am 58 and have 4 children, and I have been around the block. If you would like more information, feel free to contact me. You may have already had this baby!! Regards, KateReply

I understand why some people think this "Diet" is crazy because it is on the extreme side to American standards. But look at what most Americans eat...even vegetarianism is extreme to most and that is how most mammals close to us eat. But what I gather from what I know about the raw food "Diet" is that it isn't about losing weight as the number one concern. It is about feeding your body and feeding it the best nutrition you can give it, which is food in its most natural state, raw. Some people say that humans need meat to survive but I have seen some raw eaters and they look more alive and stronger than most "normal" people. It isn't too hard for me to think about not eating meat or dairy because honestly I don't miss it and I feel so much better without it. If you think about it as being restrictive or it's a diet where you HAVE to eat certain things and HAVE to avoid eating certain things, you will not make it through or like this because like I said, it's not about that, it's about giving your body the nutrients it needs and not a bunch of junk that it doesn't. I am not 100% raw, in fact, I have just recently been trying to eat more fruits and veggies which everyone says we need, and I have to say, when I eat healthier, raw foods, I feel tons better than when I eat meat or dairy or processed foods. You get the nutrients your body needs and no excess. I am not 100% though and I know this is a big committment type of way of eating but I think it would be worth it in the end for your health. I left this comment because I don't think people should judge a way of eating until they see the facts behind it, and I think the raw food diet or vegetarians/vegans get a bad rap in general and it shouldn't be like that. Whatever your feelings may be on this, I think everyone, meat-eater or not, benefits from eating more veggies and fruits and less processed foods.

I forgot to add something...someone said that they work out and just watch their calories and that is great if that works for you and that is your way of keeping weight off. Obviously that works, we all know that. But just because you work out and cut back on calories doesn't neccesarily mean you are the healthiest person. Thinness or looking fit doesn't always equate to total health. I think it is always going to be a human condition to want to be svelte and look good but we should also worry equally, if not more, about how healthy we are on the inside. Just a thought.

You don't have to give up animal products to eat a raw food diet. Ever hear of the Primal Diet (Aajonus Vonderplanitz)? Raw dairy, raw eggs, raw meat, and raw fish are great. Animal products are more digestible when raw. Many veggies are more healthy and digestible cooked or fermented (or sprouted). You needn't speculate, I am one of those Weston A. Price people and feeling great because of it. Btw, I was vegetarian and vegan previously like many Price people.

Hey "Boo"-

I don't know what vegetarians you've met, but you're not very well educated on the body mechanisms. Protein does not turn into protein in the body. Amino Acids do. Cooked animal flesh putrafies and stagnates, caking onto the walls (for years)of the intestinal tract causing disease. Plant and nut proteins break down for fuel and the remains are flushed out the same day!

I have been vegan for 2 years and I've never looked or felt better. AND I am no longer diabetic.

Most veggies look sick becvause they cook all the nutrients out of their food of live off cheese and soy. But then look at meat eaters - in the USA nearly 70 percent of them look unhealthy!

Is it just me or does Rachael Raw seem a bit too obsessed with raw food and healthy eating? Either she's a spambot with an aim to advertise or just a poor deluded person obsessed with healthy eating, purity and ethical eating.

There is such a thing as being too health-conscious and thats called Orthorexia.

Once Raw

Raw food rocks. For the most part. I personally went 100% raw for 6 months. I lost a ton of weight, dropped to a size 2, had glowing skin, tons of energy, and a lightness I've never before (or since) experienced.

I also came out with a $1200 a month food bill for a family of 4.

To add to that, we also had quite a dentist bill from all the raw fruits and dates and figs, etc, that are a vital part of a raw foods diet. However, sugar is sugar, whether in fruit or candy. Granted, fruit sugar is not processed, and your getting fiber, but it is still sugar.

The hardest thing about the raw food diet is the exclusiveness. First, you can not eat out if you don't have a raw food restaurant nearby. And, there is quite a bit of discrimination amongst raw food groups, where you should find companionship. Everyone there pushes you to go "100%" (there are many who follow a 50, or 75% raw diet). There are some major elitists, who claim even most things labeled "raw" aren't really raw, and that any cooked food will wreak havoc on your system.

Do I recommend it? Totally, if you're dedicated! And have quite a bank roll. Otherwise, add more fruits and veggies - that can NEVER hurt!!

And Ryan, as for needing animal products to build large muscle, you must google Storm Taliafero - he is HOT! A 100% raw body builder, about 55 years old.

To the person who mentioned anti-bacterial body products, I would suggest you (or anyone else who uses them) research triclosan in your search engine. BAD NEWS, it is. Be sure that (like Purell) that alcohol is the only ingredient used in your hand cleaner. Triclosan is in many products, including (sheesh!) one of Colgate's toothpastes.
