Real Women in Advertising

Ananova: "A firm is using 'real women' in its beauty product promotion because it says stick-thin airbrushed models make women feel bad about themselves. A survey for Dove Firming moisturiser found two-thirds of UK women feel depressed about their figures and have low body confidence as a result of beauty advertising."

I think that is pretty cool. :)

Sure its great that women are seen in this ad as having more curves, and a healthier weight then other models in ads, but look at the product that they are selling. FIRMING LOTION. This is only telling the consumer that these kinds of women NEED to use the firming lotion.

In response to Kate, Dove has represented reality as the typical model's who are usually used in these types of ads do not need firming lotion! Unrealistically sized women in the media have a detrimental effect on young girls body image and esteem and especially those who already suffer disorder eating. Well done.

i think that it is important for advertisers to tell the qualites and the effects of their product instead of selling people fake happiness and beliefs that using their product would make them happy. i have well what you can say the perfect weight and height but when advertisers show you that you need a cream or a certain product to look and feel a certain way, not just i but many others give birth to doubts in their minds....!

Dove is owned by Unilever, the makers of slim fast, and now own the licence to Hoodia gordonii extract-with plans to use in their "weight management products" Do they care about women's self esteem? they care about exploiting women's lack of it to further their profits. They want us to trust them, and buy buy buy. check out the list of ingredients they use in their products, no one needs this, and we don't need their pseudo feminism either.

There's nothing more in the world that gets on my nerves then every idol minded idiot?s anorexic vision of beauty, little do they know that it has contributed to millions of women and teens alike downfall to depression because "their soooo fat and ugly" or spending all their savings on pill popping and products that don't work but do result in
delusions of grandeur (been there done that). Little do they know that the advertising world doesn't really care about you! Making money from desperate house wives, randy widows and "first time" teens should teach the world one thing and one thing only "be happy with what you have". If that guy doesn't want to sleep with you, who cares, you shouldn't, i mean you never know he could just be queer! Lifes to short to spend all of it thinking about what sad and pathetic people think of you, so cheer up and get over it...i mean at least you not dead!

Happy thought of the day - WHAT EVER C**T!!!!!

to be entirely honest, i can see both sides of the argument. but....i also have to say that those ads, whether i liked it or not, made an impact on me. for me, it was really nice to see women who looked REAL being used for advertising. I didn't even notice what product they were attempting to sell with the advertisement until AFTER i had smiled about how those women look like people I know.

I hate to be discouraging, but...oh, what the hell. My friend and I were looking at a magazine (Cosmo, Marie Claire or something) when we saw the Dove ads for the first time. My friend's reaction? "Ew, they're showing fat people." I hate to admit it but I thought the same thing. We're both only 18 and don't want to look "normal" when we're older if that's what normal is supposed to look like.

heh heh heh @ Petra's reaction!

I had the same reaction don't worry ;)

I know shallow, horrible etc. but there it is...Truth is being fat will never be cool :0) and I am a woman saying this

I like the idea. Come on, no one's legs look like the usual models, even if you are thin. Mine aren't that long, aren't that tan, and aren't that oddly shiny. I think they'd do fine by using real models, but not retouching them. Just my 2 cents. And the women they picked aren't really fat, they're just normal. I'd be slightly grossed out if they used someone that was really overweight, I guess, but that's not what they're doing.

I am sickened by stick-thin models that look like holocaust victims.

i think it's great that dove is changing the definition of beauty from pin thin in 00 jeans to the usual 7-13 jeans.

I think fat women are grose. But through these ads i have learned that it can be beautiful. I means a lot to see cellulite on women on t.v. because i feel that showing what america is really like, fat and obese, is important because who doesnt want to die of a heartattack when they are 44? There is your answer.

If an anorexic girl sees a skinny model on TV, yeh she will use it for thinspiration. But if she sees a fat girl- she will use it as a reverse trigger. In her head she will say "omg- I'm gonna look like that" and go on a juice fast.
So show fat 'normal' girls or skinny perfect girls, you can't help us.
