What Killed Dr. Atkins, and What Keeps the Issue Alive?

The "conspiracy" continues. Was Dr. Robert Atkins obese? Did he really slip and fall?

The New York Times has more:

Dr. Robert Atkins, the diet doctor who popularized the notion that dieters could eat fat and lose weight, has been dead for nearly a year, after he fell on some ice and hit his head last April, yet indecorous questions about his health and, yes, his weight persist, and the mayor, who hasn't even been on the diet, can't seem to stay out of it all.

The latest twist is the publication in The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday of details from Dr. Atkins's confidential medical report. The report concludes that Dr. Atkins, 72, had a history of heart attack and congestive heart failure and notes that he weighed 258 pounds at death.

The release of the report by New York City officials outraged the Atkins people. It also annoyed Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, already on delicate ground in Atkins matters. "What happened is we made a mistake," said Ellen Borakove, spokeswoman for the city medical examiner's office. Late last year, the office received a request for Dr. Atkins's medical report from Dr. Richard Fleming of the Fleming Heart and Health Institute in Omaha, Neb. On Dec. 22, a member of the records staff mistakenly mailed it out.

While cause and manner of death are public information, medical reports are not. They are to be shared only with the next of kin or anyone authorized by the next of kin, physicians or medical facilities that treated the deceased, or state or federal facilities that legitimately need it.

So it was fine to tell the world that the cause of death was "blunt impact injury of head with epidural hematoma" because Dr. Atkins "fell from upright position," but that's it.

He was not obese in terms of fat. What happened was typical of elderly people who are fed intraveneously--they fill full of fluid. In this case he probably gained upwards of 50 pounds of fluid after going into his coma.

He was also 72 years old and had a history of heart problems, give the old guy a break! After age 70, you're pretty much on borrowed time. He had a good run, and in spite of being a quack, he did stumble on a winning strategy for health and weight loss. On the south beach diet and with regular exercise, I was able to lose 80 pounds in 6 months (246 to 166lbs) while only avoiding a few of the foods I like. Without Atkins popularizing low carb dieting, I wouldn't have known about this.

Low fat diets are boring, gross, unworkable, and likely a huge reason for obesity in the US.

RIP, man!

Dr Atkins' Diet is slowly clogging the arteries of millions of unsuspecting people. The primary reason people lose weight on this diet is to to the toxic reaction they are having from it, and it is only temporary - NOT BECAUSE IT"S HEALTHY FOR YOU!.

The best and healthiest diet is a 100% plant-based diet. This will reduce cancers and clear your arteries and extend your life. Read about "The China Project" - The longest and most thorough health and disease study ever conducted. The evidence is very clear. Veganomicon is a great Vegan cook book. It's $27.95 at Borders or $16 at Amazon.com. I just came out recently and it has lots of great recipes and tips as well as a friendly humorous tone.

Jan,

I am a vegan and I do wear leather shoes some of the time. I have taken control of my health, not because I'm an animal rights activist, but due to the fact that meat has been solidly proven to be the most toxic cancer fertilizer known to mankind. I would suggest to anyone interested in being healthy, or anyone helping someone else who is sick to view both of these videos:

"Eating - second edition"
"Healing Cancer: From The Inside Out"

Your life will be changed forever!!
