Sleep Apnea Can Lead To Obesity
NBC4: "Doctors have known about sleep apnea for years, but now they are linking the sleep disorder to weight gain in some cases. One of those cases is Bill Ten Eyck. After three heart attacks, he decided to take things easy. But even in retirement, he still had no energy, his weight was approaching 300 pounds and he felt awful. Ten Eyck's cardiologist suggested he see a pulmonary sleep specialist. Tests showed that Ten Eyck was suffering from sleep apnea."

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea. They gave me a breathing machine that has helped with two things: first, I can actually get quality sleep. It's amazing. I don't know how I ever got decent rest before it. Second, it's great for darth vader impersonations! :p
I'm glad NBC's finally done a story on this. The folks I know who've been diagnosed and treated for it have found it improves their general health across the board dramatically.
ReplyI am wondering if obesity leads to sleep apnea. My friend, quit smoking about 10 years ago and then went thru a messy divorce. I've seen several home videos, he was not obese in 1997.
He is 6'3" and now weighs 290. And must sleep with the apnea gear after a sleep study proved he stopped breathing several times.
I stayed with him on Wednesday night and it is obvious that he didn't sleep well, nor does he move freely so to speak. He just looks so uncomfortable.
Recently he learned he has diabetes too.
I worry about him because he is still eating HUGE amounts of food in only 2 sittings a day, and all the wrong things too. I know beacause he cooked for me three times and all heavy, fat laden food . His counters are full of sweet snacks.
Sorry I got off track but....
On a final note , I also know that from personal experience that I DID NOT snore until I got heavier. Now I do and have actually woken myself up with it.
