Walking 10,000 Steps May Require Exercise
Los Angeles Times (subscription required): "The 10,000 steps concept is a Japanese import, created by a researcher who helped to promote pedometer-measured walking into a Japanese national movement.
"Ten-thousand is a good number but there's nothing magical in it," said Jim Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.
"The best scientific evidence has demonstrated that a daily 30-minute brisk walk is important for health, not whether the step count reaches 10,000," Le Masurier wrote in the January-February issue of the American College of Sports Medicine's Health and Fitness Journal. "

Jim Hill says there is nothing magical about the number 10,000, but has he ever tried to reach the goal of walking 10,000 steps in one day? It's not easy. After a week of doing the 10,000 a day diet I think I've finally discovered what I have to do each day to achieve my goal. 10,000 doesn't seem like that much until you actually have to strive to get there. It gives me something that I have to accomplish something I must have finished before my day is over. When I look at my pedometer at the end of the day I just smile because much of the time now I am past the 10,000 mark. It makes you feel good and the next day you can definitely feel in your legs and sometimes your abs (depending on how you walk) the work you actually did. Whoever came up with the 10,000 steps a day was very intelligent and I would like to thank them because it is really helping me to loose those pounds before the holidays!
ReplyVanessa I completely agree - I was given a computerised pedometer called Fitbug (it was on Diet Doctors last night) for my birthday. At first I was a bit sceptical, but the 10,000 steps and the Fitbug website (http://www.fitbug.co.uk) is really making a difference. The site tracks how many steps I've been doing from day to day and then figures out a whole exercise and nutrition plan to fit around my lifestyle - and it keeps sends me SMS messages on my mobile to let me know when I haven't been doing enough steps - I've become a bit addicted!
ReplyIhave also joined Fitbug (a few months) and I agree with Vanessas sentiments. Ive lost about a stone since it got me walking more and thinking about the food I eat. Great to be able to actually see the progress Ive made. It makes it all worthwhile.
