Supersize Me
NY Post: "Last February, Morgan Spurlock decided to become a gastronomical guinea pig. His mission: To eat three meals a day for 30 days at McDonald's and document the impact on his health. Scores of cheeseburgers, hundreds of fries and dozens of chocolate shakes later, the formerly strapping 6-foot-2 New Yorker - who started out at a healthy 185 pounds - had packed on 25 pounds. But his supersized shape was the least of his problems. Within a few days of beginning his drive-through diet, Spurlock, 33, was vomiting out the window of his car, and doctors who examined him were shocked at how rapidly Spurlock's entire body deteriorated."

McDonald's would be smart to just admit that ANY narrow diet for a full month will produce harmful results, and that they hope that no one would stick to a pure burger diet from ANY fast-food location for a full month.
At least, this would be better than admitting that your food is greasy, low-quality crap that's only one notch above dog food meat quality.
McDonald's strength is speed of service. Quality has been severely sacrificed to be the leader in speed. But then, most fast food chains are barely any better.
ReplyWait until you see the film! I just returned from the Sundance Festival and I was one of the lucky few to see Supersize Me. I would have been skeptical too if I had not seen the movie. Spurlock was very thorough in his research including interviews from the Surgeon General, doctors and dietians. The film was entertaining but all the facts interspersed throughout were impressive and verified the fast food - obesity connection. Once you see it, you will want to change your eating habits.
ReplyWhat do you have to do to see this movie?
ReplyI am a Registered Dietitian. I just finished reading the book "Fat Land" published in 2003. It follows the same principles as it seems "Supersize Me" does regarding fast food and the rising incidence of obesity in America. If you cannot find access to the movie, read this book.
ReplyDamn! If its hard to see the film in the USA, ive got Buckleys of seeing it here in Australia!! And we have more McDonalds restaurants per capita than anywhere else in the wolrd!!!
(interestingly, we are the second fattest race in the world!)
ReplyI was wondering if anyone has heard of this movie coming to Canada? I am in Nova Scotia and would love to see it. Also, is the author going to compile his research into a book? Does anyone know!!
ReplyThanks
Anyone living in Perth, Western Australia? Supersize Me will be shown as part of the Luna Cinema's programme, screening from June 3rd onwards at Luna Leederville Ph: 9444 4056. Don't miss it!
ReplyCan't wait to see the movie, although when it will get to the outpost of Arkansas is anyone's guess.
I've read reviews of the movie and it reminds me of the book "Fast Food Nation" which came out a few years ago. I'd urge everybody to read this book as well as see the movie. (P.S. Most libraries have the book, so it won't cost you anything to read it!)
ReplySuper Size Me is alternatively hilarious and profoundly frightening. Do whatever you have to do to see this film. One viewing will make the thought of eating a big, greasy, fast food meal nauseating. Like the doctors in the film, I was amazed that a shift to a high fat diet could bring on fatty hepatitis within just a few weeks, and hopefully this will be an eyeopener for a lot of people.
ReplyI just saw this movie about three hours ago (and of course got there fifteen minutes late, since I had a friend drive) at our local Evanston CineArts. This is a movie everyone should see and take to heart. It disturbs me that while walking out of the theater I heard people say "Oooh, I want McDonald's now!" as if they hadn't been taking in the message at ALL! I hate that, man.
I haven't eaten cow meat for a few months now. It wasn't really a conscious decision. . .just I never felt like eating it when the opportunity arose. I hope to phase out all meat, but I just like chicken so much.
ReplyPersonally, I think this guy is stupid. No one eats three supersize meals a day at McDonalds. That is just dumb. He has a stick up his a** because he is probably some health food freak. So he should just shut up and quit causing McDonalds so much grief. He probably just needs more money.
ReplySuzy - did you even see the film? With comments like "No one eats three supersize meals a day at McDonalds" it sure sounds like you didn't. If you did, you'd know he DIDN't eat three supersized meals a day. (He only supersized it when they asked, I think a total of seven times.) He also explains why he is doing this- to test the claim McDonalds made that their fool isn't unsafe. And he sure didn't come off as a health food nut at all- he was bitching about his Vegan girlfriend's diet.
Maybe you should actually see the damn film before claiming he "has a stick up his a**" - you sound pretty foolish and ignorant. And honestly, YOU sound like you have a stick up YOUR ass about this. Maybe you'd like this site instead - http://www.techcentralstation.com/supersizecon.html - they make a lot of uninformed claims about this movie as well. I mean, do you work for Mikey-D's PR department or something?
Cheers,
Bill
Replywe are two students doing a review on supersize me and the effects macdonalds has on people.
Replywe would like to find out more about the movie and reviews it recieved in america. please send us the email address of morgan spurlock as we would like to find out the effects from his point of view.
thank you and reply A.S.A.P
camielle.
This film rocked my world-I really wish more people who were so skeptical about it would see it so they could form a more rational opinion. Ugh...freaky.
Does anyone know where I can find any statistics about how much people eat in other countries, or how education systems differ internationally?
Any international studies with statistics?
I'm guessing Fast Food Nation, but any websites?
Much appreciated!

i think this guy went to far. i work for mcdonald's in my town and the same ppl come in there every day and order the same things each day and i dont see nothing wrong physically with them. we use 100% pure beef (yes i know its greasy) but its real meat.....real chicken not processed and clean filtered oil every day so whats the problem? i think we do have some flaws but thats why its called fast food.......its all about the money when ppl are on the go
ReplyI visited a site called mymcdiet.com and this guy ate at McDonalds for 4 months straight. I had asked him if he was crazy or McDonalds was paying him and he said McDonalds was not worth the time. He did it for charity and to show that walking works wonders. He stopped walking and gained half the weight back in one month. He said he is starting a new site but no fast food companies want to work with him. He is going to lose 100 pounds eating fast food. I think he is crazy.
Replyi love twinks, the cream is the best
ReplyI'm not surprized with the result of the experiment. "mystery meat" *cringes
ReplyCome On!
Any body who thinks that Spurlock did this for ANY reason other than to make money and a name for himself is drinking fryer fat. NO ONE eats like this idiot did for 30 days. He saw McDonald's as an easy target because he knew - as would anyone with half a brain - that eating pounds of french fries and gallons of milk shakes and lots of fried foods and lots of anything that is loaded with sugar and other carbs will make you gain weight. DUH! McDonald's certainly does not suggest that people eat in their restaurants for every meal, every day. If everybody did that, we would need a LOT more McDonald's. The idea is that If you like the way something tastes, you have the opportunity to enjoy it whenever you want to.
Let's face it, McDonald's is an easy target. They sell food that people like to eat because of the way it tastes, not because it is necessarily the perfect health food. If that was true, the place would probably be called McVeggie or something and the sign would read "OVER 500 SOLD".
Spurlock made a movie to make money - period. Now, he is continuing to make even more by taking his "message" to school children in the classroom. To tell them what? Don't be stupid and eat at McDonald's for every single one of your meals? Give me a break.
Really, give Mickie D's a break. They employ thousands of people and every year they give millions and millions of dollars to charities all over the world. They sponsor kids sports and other events we all love to watch. And next time you hear of a little kid who is sick and has to stay in a hospital for weeks at a time, remember who gives his mom, dad and brothers and sisters a place to stay near the hospital, for free - Yep, McDonald's.
Lets see Spurlock take some of the money he made off his stupid movie and do that - something important - for a family.
