Diet convergence
The South Beach doc and British spokeswoman for Weight Watchers bring their slimness visions to Atlanta
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Such was the day for the apostles of two of the most popular diets in America, the South Beach Diet and Weight Watchers, who just happened to converge in Atlanta to spread their gospels.
South Beach Diet:Preaches avoidance of "bad" carbs and consumption of "good" carbs. Says you don't have to count carbohydrate grams.
Three phases:
Phase 1: The strict phase. No bread, rice, potatoes, pasta, baked goods, fruit, candy, ice cream, sugar, beer or alcohol for two weeks.
Phase 2: The weight loss phase. You'll be able to pick and choose from the items you had to avoid in Phase 1. You stay in this phase until you reach your goal.
Phase 3: Maintaining your weight
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weight Watchers:
All foods have a value, called "points." Based on your weight and activity level, you have a certain range of points to eat within each day. You also are given a reserve of 35 points each week to use however you'd like.
No foods are off limit, but because each food item has a certain number of points, eating richer, more fattening foods will use up your points faster. In addition to exercising, Weight Watchers recommends consumption of a certain number of fruits or vegetables and water each day.
Has there been any scientific studies done on the long-term health risks of a low carbohydrate diet? There's been enough studies done on ephedra based supplements, but I wonder at times at the long term nutritional risk of severe carbohydrate restriction. If anyone knows please drop a comment here and maybe a link to any information you might have.
Thanks.
