Dance Dance Revolution Weight Loss

GetUpMove.com: "This is Tanya Jessen's story of how she lost 95lbs, not through conventional diet and exercise but by playing the video game, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Tanya started playing DDR 4 years ago when she was 17 and enjoyed it so much that it became a regular activity. Through sharing her weight loss story, Tanya hopes to tell people that losing weight can be easy and fun by choosing an activity that fits in with your lifestyle. Tanya is working with RedOctane to educate Americans about a fun new way to lose weight while using an Ignition(tm) Dance Pad."

I started with In The Groove. I got it from my husband after much begging, for Valentines day. I am 5'6" and started at 176. I weighed 173 today after four days. I have done 2 hours each of the 3 days I haved worked out. It is just really fun and I can already tell in just the way I feel. I truely believe it should be about fun and the way you feel and not so much about the weight and the weight is a side effect to having a blast. BTW, I am an old fart, too. Almost 33.

hey umm... i weigh like 120 and I'm just trying to lose fat... i mean pounds would be cool too... but i have A LOT of muscle in me and that's what puts in my pounds. I'm wondering like what is the best way to exercise? Because I am trying to lose like 10 pounds in one week which is gonna be pretty freakin' hard but idk...i'm seriously dying to lose it because i'm going to this lock-in next week... March 10-11 and we're going swimming... all my cousins are nice and fit and I am not fat... at all.. but I'd like to be "skinny" and lose like 20-25 pounds in like two weeks... i mean i am not sure if ten pounds makes a "difference" really. So I may not even need to lose 20 pounds but I'd like to. Can someone tell me about how many calories/pounds I'd have to lose per day and how's the best way to do it? Like...play DDR for a half hour, take a break, play for another half hour... ect.? That'd be great!! Well thanks a ton... later!!

Ya, I've been playing DDR for about 2 weeks. I currently play up to until I reach my goal of burning between 15000-2,000 calories. To accomplish this it usually takes me around 25-40 minutes. I do not follow the dance moves of the game though. I just move my legs and body like a crazy man for this amount of time to do this. I also wear 5 t-shirts and 3 pairs of shorts as well,to sweat off extra water weight. In 2 weeks I have lost about 8-10 pounds, playing DDR about 5 times a weak, with moderetly changing my diet as well.

Okay, I have DDR extreme and I've been playing off and on on begginner for awhile now. I've unlocked like a bunch of new characters and songs. The thing is when I play the light mode I SUCK. I miss all the beats because they're so close together. I'm doing pilates daily and I want to keep loosing weight until June (when hopefully I'll meet my goal weight) is it okay that I play my songs on begginner or should I just TRY to play them on light and burn the calories anyways?

Which parts of the body will playing DDR, umm... tone? Will it do anything at all to your arms, or will it be mainly your legs? It will get rid of stomach pudge right? Sorry if my questions are stupid...

Reply
Bencze

DDR is just intended for aerobic cardio exercise. To "tone" specific areas, you would need to add weight training exercises.

Joe, it's hardly possible to burn 1500-2000 calories in that amount of time. If that's what the game is telling you, then it is exaggerating how much you are really burning. It takes about one hour on a stationary bike to burn 400 calories.

Still trying to loose my wonderful holliday weight gain, and then some. I realized, through a biology class, that I was edging off the healthy weight cliff to overweight. I had lost 50 lbs by watching what I ate after my brother was diagnosed with diabetes and the family went on a diabetic friendly diet. Now, it seems I hit a plateau at 165. I play at least 30 minutes a day, sometimes 4 hours when I'm in the mood, but I try to do something during my school schedule. I pose a question, how do I defeat this plateau? I have been this weight for a month now and can't seem to break it. I have been watching my food intake and I had upped to standard mode this month, so I am working harder, but the weight won't come off. Any suggestions?

i got ddr a couple weeks ago, but only started actively the last two weeks. i love the game and i'm already passing several heavy songs and can regularly ace the standards :). anyways, i have weighed myself several times everyday, and have only lost about 5 pounds, but i am noticeably slimmer around my mid section, and i can feel muscle under that bit of flab:D. also, my legs are stronger. so i think the poundage you lose does not matter as much as the fat you lose and muscle gained. yay. good luck to all you other ddr players!

also, i almost forgot. i am pretty nerdy and only have a couple friends at school, but ddr has helped me be more outgoing. a couple days ago my school held a little thing for music and tech and what not, so me and my friends brought ddr. everybody was playing, except me, and my friends finally forced me to go. i thought i was going to make a fool of myself an get made fun of. turns out i got a double A on the lvl 6 song. i was really proud of myself, and was applauded by many of the kids. ddr has helped me out alot :). i now feel much more confident in myself. w00

if anybody wanted to know my plan:

eat something good for breakfast, like an orange or two with toast or something along those lines.
at high school, i actually try in p.e., and no snacks at lunch! cutting down on the chips and ice cream or whatever saves money and calories!
when i get home, i grab a snack like a couple pears or something, run upstairs and flip on my ddr. i turn it on standard (obviously you can change to match skill level), put it on random, and crank out about 2 1/2 to 4 hours og songs. by the end of each day i lose about 1000 calories at least!

tips: if you are playing on light, try to add steps in between the actual steps, you can lose several extra calories each song, and get ready for higher difficulties.
sometimes when i'm feeling energetic, i'll play a 7 footer or more. even though i know i will fail, i can lose about 10 calories in 30 seconds :). also, don't get discouraged when playing a harder song. if you fail, instead of getting aggravated and trying again and again, try a different song for like 15 mins. when you come back to the hard song, i can almost guarantee that you will do better :)
and always remember to have fun with it!

New Mommy

Welp, hopefully this website will be an effective tool in helping me finally get rid of my extra wait. As my name tells, I am a new mom, and my journey to be fit has been a tease. Before I got pregnant I weight 185lbs. (I am 5'4) I do not know how it happen, the weight just crept on, and one day after seeing a picture of myself, and not being able to fit in to my size 14 jeans, I made my mind up that something HAD to change. And boy, was I motivated.

EVERY night I was in my apartment gym, running/walking on the treadmill. I read all the books, and even kept a food journal. It took two months, but I lost enough weight to weigh in at 143lbs.

I looked and felt GREAT. I felt a way I had never felt before, I, for the first time in my life, always felt like I looked good no matter what I was wearing or how I looked. I was in a size 6 dress and size 7 pant. I enjoyed my new clothes for 2 months.. I WAS PREGNANT....

I gained so much weight and in my last month 20lbs die to pregnancy hypertention. If it wasn't for my sweet little boy, I would be sp depressed. I balloned to 205lbs!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Luckily, ALOT of it melted off.. I am back to 167lbs.

But, it isn't good enough, I want to lose more!! I wanna be a MILF =) I am only 23 for goodness sake!

And so, as you can tell, I hate the treadmill now, but love DDR. I know how to eat right and I have began my food journal again. My son will soon be 3 months old, and before he is six months old I want to be in the 130s.. I hope DDR will help.

I did it for the first time tonight for over an hour on light and actually scored a double AA on some songs. I guess that is pretty good. I play on XBOX..

Anyone have any advise?? I am so glad to have this support.

And SLW.. I wish I were 120 =) You probably dont need to lose any, just tone if you are unhappy.

alright. Erin, there is actually a section on this site about your problem: (http://www.diet-blog.com/archives/2006/02/27/5_ways_to_break_a_weight_loss_plateau.php)

And for the new mom, congrats! Also, good job on the AAs :). I'm no expert or anything but just try to eat several small meals throughout the day, instead of just 3 big meals. This helps speed up your metabolism, and gives you a chance to use the energy before it is stored up as fat. I like to eat about 5-6 small meals a day with a half an hour or more dance session after I eat. Also, drink lot's of water. And if your schedule allows, spend more time on the dance pad!
Good Luck, and I'm sure you will be a "MILF" in no time, lol.
Dave.

I have an odd problem. I'm involved in practically any sport you can think of and I dont eat like crazy but you could consider it a problem. I'm around 170-180 pounds, 15 years old and 5'8. I'm one active kid but I just seem to be fat. My problems are my legs mainly and my stomach, my arms could use some work but they are alright. I went over to a friend's house for homework and we took a break and she brought out the dance pad. She asked if I'd ever played. I said no but I had heard of the game before, never really gave it much thought. So she showed me an example or two with some easy songs and asked me if I wanted to give it a go. I said no. Flat out NO. I was not about to embarass myself that much. Now this girl I'd played many sports with, but we're relatively new friends so I felt uncomfortable. She begged me to try and I just kept saying no. I just wasnt ready for her to see me jumping and getting all sweaty since I sweat like crazy even with the simplest things. So she let me get away with it and I went home that day and looked up the game just for the fun of it.

I found many different pads and games but I've figured out which one would be best for me and which game seems to be my style. I'm just sick and tired of trying all these crazy diets my mom gives to me and always failing and then going through mini-depression where I just end up eating more. I just hate the feeling of having to wear jersey's that reveal parts of my body I'm not comfortable with showing (ex. spandex shortshorts). I dont play anywhere close to how good I really can cause I'm always readjusting and I'm just dead scared and uncomfortable with my body.

I want to surprise everyone next school year in September with a great body and I can sense that my personality and spirit will change along with my body making school more fun and just letting me live more comfortably.

Now that's all great and dandy but how do I do it? I wanted to try this. I can feel I'm gonna get addicted to it, I easily get addicted to games like this and it seems to be something I'd like. My mom is willing to buy me Extreme 2 with 2 Ignition Pads in April, I'm willing to cut down on the sweets, keep up sports, and just dance till I drop. Just wondering if any of you who have actually had success with this have any advice for me?

And with everything I've said up there, dont get me wrong. This is 100% for me and I'm health concious, it's not all about looks. My family has heart disease history and I really dont wanna get sucked into that. I'd rather fix it now than later when it's too late. It's gonna be nice when my friends get the surprise of a lifetime but this is for me. Not for my mom, not for my friend but for me. I want to this, I've wanted to do this for a long time and this is it. I've always been the fat kid and I've always just wished I could be like everyone else and wear the trendy clothes and go tanning at the beach and stuff like that but I need some help first.

Thanks for reading and anything you gotta say will help. Thanks a lot!

I've been reading all of your comments and they have inspired me to exercise through ddr. I tried this game out about a year ago and thought it was so much fun. I decided to buy all 3 of the X-Box ddrs recently so I had a ton of variety in songs. (I tend to get burnt out on things fast)

I started getting serious about working on on DDR about a week ago. I've lost 2 lbs. already too! I'm just eating healthy and drinking plenty of water and green tea. I hear green tea helps you to burn 50-100 calories more in a sedentary state and even more when exercising. It also helps to burn fat, so yeah. I'm drinking it to see if it helps my results.

I'll try to keep posting to update on my success.

Congratulations to you all! You guys are truly amazing and have so much will power! Keep it up!

I know its not tons like some people, but I feel so much better and I am so excited that I am accomplishing my goals. I have been playing DDR each night (I bought a new game so I wouldnt get bored), and watching what I eat and it really works! I have allot more to go but I am sure that I can make it....

I just started playing DDR Tuesday night. Ive played about a total of 4.5-5 hours. The game says that I have burned about 800 Kcals, is that right? It doesnt sound like it to me, seeing how that means 800,000 cals, which would be like 1000+ lbs. Unless the DDR cals are measured differently, it must be wrong.... Whats a Kcal equivlant to in cals? I currently weigh 211 lbs, and I want to get down to like 180-190 range. How long do you all expect it to take to get to that? Also, Im moving to Phoenix at the end of June, do you think thats enough time to lose that 20-30 lbs?

Is the workout mode calorie count accurate? I've been doing 1000 calories on it everyday. But i'm not sure if it's very accurate.

Dalton,
Calories are kind of funny. What you think of as 1 cal (as on food boxes and stuff), is actually one Cal (big C...) which is equal to 1 Kcal. Basically, a true calorie is the ammount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram (cubic centermeter) of water 1 degree celcius. This is not a lot of energy. As a result, what we label on all our packages in the US are actually Cal = Kcal.

I've just found this site today with the hopes of using it as a support tool. I'm 37 years old, 5'5", 170 lbs and in the worst shape of my life. I played DDR at a friends house last Saturday and went out and bought the whole system the next morning...PS2, red octane pad, and DDR. I have been "playing" everyday. I started using workout mode on Monday and have it set for 525 calories which takes me about 40 - 60 minutes. It took me a few days to figure out which songs burned the most calories. I'm working on Light mode right now, but hope to move up soon. On top of my workout, I spend several hours each night playing with my girls and their friends...we actually had a DDR competition at my house with my 18 year olds friends....pretty neat when your house becomes the hang out! I have not seen any weight loss as of yet, but I have already noticed a significant difference in the way my clothes are fitting. I have a 20 year high school reunion in July and would like to lose between 25 and 35 lbs. Wish me luck.

Hey all! I've been playing DDR for 4 days now and I'm loving it. It's not like traditional exercise at all, it's actually fun and the time seems to fly by.

Anyway, as for my stats, I'm probably between 230-250 (not sure, the scale isn't my friend) and wear a size 18-20, and I am 5'10 or so, so I'm pretty tall and it doesn't look like I weigh all *that* much, just look chubby. I do feel self conscious though and would like to at least lose the stomach flab and increase my stamina. Oh yeah, and I'm 21 and female, if any of that matters =P

The first day I played DDR I was surprised at all of the energy I had. I've been playing it anywhere from 1-2 hours a day so far, and I don't see myself getting burned out anytime soon. Usually I play on free mode or dance master mode (on DDR Extreme 2), and it's just easy to lose track of time. I love the feeling it gives me, after playing I'm not even really all *that* tired, just really sweaty. It really pumps me up. Anyway, I can really see myself losing weight on this.

I've never actually tried diet or exercise before, because, let's face it, to generalize, salad and running can suck. But my plan is to just play DDR everyday and eat smaller portions of the food I like (so only 1 plate for me). Oh, and no scales, I don't really care how much I weigh, it's about how I look. I was losing weight and looking pretty good about a year and a half ago, but that was the *drug that shall not be mentioned* diet. I'll never do that kind of stuff again, so I'm really looking forward to doing this the right way.

Anyway, sorry to ramble on so long, just had to introduce myself ^_^

Oh, and let me be in the "let's congratulate Adam" club... good job dude ^_^

And last thing, if you don't have one you should really invest in a redoctane pad... they are nice.

Hey guys, I have been reading over this while at work all morning and I want to start off by saying congrats to everyone for taking the first step to improving your life.
As of yesterday I now have the DDRExtreme2. I had just the DDRExtreme, and personally I did not find myself liking the music. However I did lose and have kept off 20 lbs.
So right now I am at 151 and want to lose 20-30 more. I played around for about an hour lastnight and some how lost 2 lbs. For some reason I can lose weight super fast, I just need the motivation! And this game really does provide that.
So yeah....
Starting at 151....I will keep you guys posted!

(KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK GUYS!!!!!!!!)

Hey everyone!

I see I haven't posted for a while. I thought i'd let you know how I was doing. Some of you may remember that I was trying to lose 30lbs before my cruise. I eneded up losing 21 lbs, not what I hoped for but...my clothes were so much loser.

If any of you ever been on a cruise, you would know that it is about the fastest way to gain weight. I remember gaining 13lbs on the cruise last year and I was just hoping and praying that it wouldn't happen again.

As soon as I got home from the ship, I weighed in- I had only gained 3lbs. Eating like a pig all week and no exercise- only gaining 3lbs...surprised the daylights out of me.

I think DDR has an effect on how you gain weight, you just don't gain it very fast. Which is another of the million reasons I love DDR!

So how does someone just start this? I know you need to buy all the stuff, but what, you just start dancing and you get better and the fat just starts coming off? That sounds pretty darn cool to me.

How long do ya think it'd be before you start seeing actual results? Like your jeans are feeling looser, or you find you have tons more energy and dont get winded going up stairs?

Micro Soft-

It is and is not that easy. For ME personally, what I started doing was drinking nothing but water. All day, and cutting down on how much I ate. I am not one that likes to diet. I loooove food and I am not going to stop eating what I like. BUT the key to that is to make the portion size smaller. What I do is stop when I start feeling full. This does bother some people if they go out to eat and only eat like 1/3 of their meal, they feel that they are wasting money. So what I started doing is just share something with whomever I go out with. If you go alone, you can always take left overs. So a huge thing with me was eliminating sodas. I would drink like 5-6 a day! Now with drinking LOTS of water everyday, eating less, and DRR'n it up for an hour a day, I have already lost 7 lbs since monday. OH! and im not drinking beers everyday after work like I was. So that is helping ALOT.
Best advice I can give is have fun with it. Don't look at this as losing weight, just having fun. With that you will start to want to eat better, and you will start to feel better!
GOOD LUCK!!!

I am by no means trying to discourage your progress, but make sure you do this for YOU. Weight loss is tuff as I am sure you know, and if things with this girl end up not being all you thought they would, you dont want to end up back at 250. You seem like a great kid, and loosing weight is important...but for you and your life, not anyone elses. Keep up the great work :)

I've been playing for about 2 months now and i have stayed the same weight. I am thinking of changing my diet. Does anyone knows what's the most effective diet plan? I've heard of a new diet called "Slow-Carb or The low GI(Glycemic Index)" diet. It's based on eating low Glycemic foods. I am wondering if anyone had tried this diet? It'd been proven in a medical study to be the most effective out of the low fat and low carb diet. Let me know. Thanks.

Hi all. Glad to see you are doing well.

I am running an experiment. I am 15 years old and 180 pounds. I bought DDR extreme 2 and Eye Toy Kinetic. I am seeing if video games can actually help me loose weight. I've also cut my calories by half, and am on a 1000 a day diet. So far within 4 days I have lost five pounds. If you're having fun playing DDR, you may have fun with eye toy kinetic. It allows you to jump around your room, and even has a body toner.

I want to get to my 1deal weight, 130, but I know that's not going to be for a while. Wish me luck.

Hey everyone. I just thought I'd hint at something. Just push yourself to do better. I've had DDR Ultramix 3 for, what, 4 days, now? And I'm already passing songs on Heavy. The problem here is the fact that people aren't challenging themselves to do better. Why don't we try that?
