Dance Dance Revolution Weight Loss
GetUpMove.com: "This is Tanya Jessen's story of how she lost 95lbs, not through conventional diet and exercise but by playing the video game, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Tanya started playing DDR 4 years ago when she was 17 and enjoyed it so much that it became a regular activity. Through sharing her weight loss story, Tanya hopes to tell people that losing weight can be easy and fun by choosing an activity that fits in with your lifestyle. Tanya is working with RedOctane to educate Americans about a fun new way to lose weight while using an Ignition(tm) Dance Pad."

Hey ya'll, I have been reading your stories and they are all really cool. I am getting ddr for christmas and wondered if there are any tips to help me get started. I played a little at the arcade but don't have much experience. Anything would help, thanx ya'll.
Replyhi i want to get ddr but was really confused on which one to get because there are so many. there is metal pads, mats, and two player. Any tips would be great!
Replythis is coming from a newbie but the arcade is hands down the best, but if you going to play at home you should get any of the DDRs or ITG (in the groove) just to get your feet wet, then once you progress you can decide what you want, keep in mind a metal pad will run you about 200 bucks for an afterburner or 300 bucks for a cobalt flux, and that doesnt include the 70 bucks for shipping, so my advice would be just to buy the game with the cheapo pad included to get your feet wet to see if you like it, then take the money you would spend on a metal pad, go to your bank and get rolls of quarters with it, and just go to the arcade a lot, the arcade is where you will meet other gamers, they can give you hints and whatever, and when you meet people that are really good and play on expert it is inspiring to play a lot better, i have had the home version of ddrextreme 2 and the only thing i use it for is the workout mode every morning just to get the blood flowing, if you serious about playing DDR or ITG, the arcade is the way to go, have fun.

ReplyOh and I also wanted to say congrats to Adam on his progress. You are a great inspiration. I am currently 5'7" 180-185lbs. I would like to be about 150-160(starting small). I was wondering how the workout mode works, do you choose a song and play it till you reach the set calorie loss or do you choose a number of songs or what?
Replyyeah thats how the workout mode on DDR ex2 works, you select either the number of calories you want to burn, or a length of time. The game will keep track of your calorie burn and it converts your workout into a jogging equivalent. The cool thing about the work out mode is you can turn off some of the complicated dance steps so your just doing some step aerobics. Also if you play ITG at the arcade, you can take a portable USB flash drive and put it in the arcade, it will save your settings and high scores and tell you how many calories you have burned.
ReplyWell, it's me again. First off, I've been reading some of the comments and I'm happy I could be of inspiration to some people. You guys are all great on this site, and I wish you the best in your weight loss goals. As far as how far I've come since my last post (November 8, 1 month ago), I've come down to 198 as of this morning. 10 lbs in a month. Either the weight loss has slowed down due to me plateuing, or the fact that I've been doing heavy lifting 5 days a week at work and have probably put on a good 5 pounds of muscle in my arms and legs this month. Regardless, 10 lbs. in a month is good. I'm going to be picking up DDR again now that it's too cold too run outside nowadays. It will be strange jumping into again after a 1 1/2 month break.
Down 42 lbs., 38 to go. More than half way there.
ReplyAdam
Oh, the comments from friends, family and co-workers is another MAJOR incentive to get up and move. Over Thanksgiving break I met with my Dad who I hadn't seen in 4 months and my weight loss was all he could talk about. Same thing with my ex-girlfriend (that's the best) and my friend from college, as well as nearly ALL of my co-workers. It feels great to get that feedback from people you care about. The inevitable question of how I did it always comes up soonafter the congrats, and they're AMAZED when I say I've been eating right and exercising. No magic pills, no BS. So good luck to you all again.
Adam
ReplyCool thanks for the info. Thats really great adam, I know you'll reach your goal. It really is amazing how much a game like ddr can do in so many peoples lives. Good luck to everyone, and Happy Holidays. =)
ReplyHi, folks! I'm waiting for the game to arrive in the mail at the moment. I work out all the time (running, swimming, weight lifting, cross country skiing). However, I work at home and my job is EXTREMELY sedentary. I literally take about 200 steps per day. Since I find it's harder to motivate myself to go for a run in the winter, I figured I could take 10-30 minute breaks from work throughout the day in addition to going to the gym. This would be instead of eating in front of the television!
I was just wondering how many of you work out in ADDITION to DDR.
Replywell I haven't started on ddr at home yet but i used to workout at the gym on a weekly basis. it was cool and all and it was somewhat working but after awhile it seemed more like routine than working out. I even added more weight and stuff and ran a little more but I just could'nt enjoy as I did at first. But when you are playing a game like this it doesn't seem like a workout because its fun and you can enjoy it and earn more songs and go to higher difficulties. So in a way your following all those mcdonalds commercials and health groups by getting up and doing something. Its just that something happens to also be a video game.
Replyyou guys were talkin about the workout mode, what is that and which type of ddr is it on? ddr arcade? as i said I want to buy one but not sure which kind of ddr to get. which kind would i have to buy in order to get workout mode? sorry I am new to ddr.
Adam- good job!!!!
ReplyTHANK YOU DDR!!!!!!
I'm 25 years old. For as long as I can remember, I've always been very overweight. And for as long as I can remember, I've been attempting to lose weight. The past 10 years of my life has pretty much been a series of failed diet attempts.
I think my main problem was that I hated excercise, I could never get myself to stick to a regular excercise routine. Whenever I did excercise, it felt like torture. Getting myself to excercise was like pulling teeth!
I first tried DDR because my friends were really getting into it. The first time I started playing I felt ridiculous and clumsy. Here I was, this fat college girl lumbering around on this game that was made for skinny teenagers and everyone was watching me!
But there was something strangely addictive about it. I couldn't stop! I'd play for half an hour, sweat would be pouring down my face and back and all I wanted to do was keep going. The first week I must have put at least $70 into that machine.
I finally got my DDR pads in the mail a little over a month ago and have been playing everyday since. I am burning about 600 calories on the work out mode each day and am having the time of my life!!!!!! For the first time in my life, excercise doesn't feel like torture.
I'm 5'1". Last month I weighed 215 pounds. This morning I weighed myself and I was down to 200 and all I had to do was play a really fun video game for a month!!!!!
I'm ESTATIC, I've never been able to successfully lose weight before and I know it's going to keep going down. because I'm going to keep playing this game. It's like a miracle diet: Play video games for 1 month - Lose 15 pounds!
I highly, highly recommend this game to anyone who's had trouble losing weight.
DDR was the best thing that's ever happened to me! Thanks DDR!
It's a shame, I think most people see DDR as a game for kids but in fact I think it's one of the most powerful workout tools ever invented!
ReplyWorkout Mode is a game setting that allows you to track how many calories you've burned. Each time you step you burn something like a tenth of a calorie and you can see these calories adding up on the screen as you play. When you finish playing a song, it tallys up how many calories you burned during that song, how many calories you've burned that day and how many calories you've burned over the months. It also convets your game playing into the equivalent amount of jumping rope, jogging and swimming so you have a point of comparison.
ReplyI wish you the best of luck "x", you're going to have so much fun!
Just one helpful tip: Play with your ears, not with your eyes.
I know exactly nothing about game systems. We don't play video games of any kind. We're only getting a game system to play DDR but don't know which one is better. Would you guys recommend PS2 or Xbox?
ReplyI HAVE STARTED THE DDR 3 DAYS AGO AND I ALREADY FEEL THINNER AND STRONGER.. AND IM CURRENTLY 155 LBS AND HOPING TO GET BACK DOWN TO 120 LBS AGAIN.. HOW LONG DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TAKE TO DO THIS AND HOW OFTEN SHOULD I USED DDR.
ReplyTHANX
GWYNNYT
I HAVE DONE THE GAME ON BOTH XBOX AND PS2 AND THINK THERE BOTH GREAT

Hey,
ReplyI'v had my dancemat for months, but got out of it recently. Im desperate to lose weight, despite the fact no-one says I'm fat - except my best friend when I ask her to be honest.
Well, I weigh 113.4 (roughly), I'm roughly 5"0 and I'm 12, 13 in feb.
Just wanted to say thanks for posting all your tips and info, it's really persuaded me to start dancing to lose weight again, and I'll try and come back soon to let you know how I get on :)
eileen,
no sorry... i was asking if it was possible to lose 15 lbs in a month.. i just started the dance 3 days ago but i am already sore and feel like my abs are tighter and butt is tighter.. and shannon.. u are not fat.. u should be fine if you are 5' and 113 lbs.. i used 2 be 115 lbs and im 4'9 and i looked great then .
Replyelieen,

dana
ReplyCongratulations to all of you guys who've managed to find a fun way to lose weight and become healthier. My best friend lost (over 12 months) about 110 pounds playing DDR.
I've gone with more conventional forms of excercise to lose weight (including elliptical workouts, swimming, and calorie control) but I must admit the occasional hour on DDR after 2 weeks of going to the gym, it feels like a reward more than excercise.
Replyheres a tip-
Replyive found that playing for over an hour striaght really tires you out. I used to get home from work or school and play for about an hour untill i gokt tired. For some reason or another my disk keeps freezing, and thankgod because everytime the disk freezes, i write down how many calories ive burnt up untill that point. Then i take a break. Maybe an hour, maybe 5 hours, but after i play again. I usually burn like 300 calories before it freezes and i do that like 3 times a day. Ive found that playing for shorter periods of time more frequently lets you lose weight alot faster.
scott,
how much weight did you lose and how long did it take you ??
ReplyRight now ive lost about 10 lbs, and its been alittle over a month. I know for me 10 lbs isnt alot of weight, i cant see any difference in my body, but i guess the next ten might make me look alittle thinner. What im really trying to do is get rid of my "man boobs". You see, ive got a good amount of muscle in my upper-body, but that really only helps the fat to pretrude more. Im like a rock covered with jello ;P
Replyhey i know you guys that read this are probably like 14 and over. well im turning into a pre -teen in like one -monthe and i just entered middle-school. im 12 and i weigh in at 148 and 5'1 tall. im a guy so i want to really impress the girls. i was just wondering as a pre-teen can i really lose weight. because the average weight for me should be near like 99 lbs.i have a ddr and was wondering if i stik with it can i like shed of like 48-49 lbs i dont care how long it takes. i am well disciplined with stiking with something can anyone tell me at my age can i lose the weight and shed of the pounds.
ReplyDDr preteen kid,
Replyim turning 16 this month, and i can tell you from experience that you shouldnt ttry to lose any weight at your age. I've always been a chubby person myself, and when i was your age i did everything i could to try to lose weight. Me and my mom joined weight watchers together, and all that really helped me do was stay the same weight. Thats what you want to do. Youve still probably got acouple growth-spurts in you, and as you get taller, the more normal you'll look. I regret quiting weight watchers every single day of my life. I always think what i would look like if i stayed the same weight.
Whats going to happen is you'll be able to eat alot more and not get full. Dont let htis happen. This is wheni gained all of my weight. I could eat 3 bagels and 2 things of ramen noodle soup and still have room for supper. You should also try to stay the hell away from fast food- that stuff'll kill ya man.
IF U PLAY ABOUT 2.5 HOURS A DAY FOR 3 MONTHS HOW MANY LBS. WOULD YOU LOOSE ON STANDERD AND LIGHT...?
ReplyWell mikey so far it seems that you will usually lose about 10 pounds or so a month even on light and standard for about 1 hour a day so you should lose about 30-45 lbs or so in three months.
Replyall of you guys that lost weight doing ddr... how long did it take for you to start seeing some results ... like 2 weeks???
ReplyDdr pre-teen
really.. age has nothing to do with it... untill you get into the older range and your matabolism might change... if anything, you would probably loose the weight faster.. Just stay active, play a lot, and lay off the candy, junk food, and peanut butter (I eat a lot of peanut butter ;-P heheh)
I don't suggest playing 7 hours to start with, I do that, and my legs hurt so much that I can't play for the next week or so... which doesn't help you loose weight, because then your legs hurt to much to do normal activities... or you just do them and live through the pain.. that's always good...
but it's best to build up.. and hour isn't that long of a session, and goes by quickly. so play an hour till your used to that, then go further. Drink lots of water... that helps you to play longer, and wash out your system (which helps you to feel better and loose weight)
you actually loose weight faster by not using the workout mode... and they're more fun.
Stretch out before you play.. run around the block or something, that helps you play longer too, and then start with a couple simple dances before going to your normal or pushing a little further. When you're 'dancing' try bouncing a bit more, jump up and down wail youre waiting for the song to load. that will keep you all pumped up and loose calories faster.
For the 48-49 lbs, you'll need to be consistant (well, for any weight), that'll take a couple months, and you need to eat well, or you're not going to burn anything. for the weight you want, you'll want your intake to be around... 500-1000 calories a day.. witch.. seems pretty unrealalistic... but that's probably because you're supposed to be much smaller then me
yeah.. again.. age isn't going to mean that you can't loose weight with it. Just your attitude towards it, and how persistant you are.
OOOOKAAYAYYYY I'm done... :-p heheh
Reply:-p
Dana
How persistant are you? If you play a lot and eat right, you'll see some change after the first week.. but it wont be to much.
Replyi am me,
Replyhey i actually just got the game this week.. ive been playing for like 5 days now.. i havent lost any weight yet although i can see that my stomache isnt so puffy and it feels very tight.. but then again i havent been weighing myself in the morning either so i might have lost a lb or 2 but i think it would prob take 2 weeks 2 see results cusae it prob takes ur body a week to flush out all the bad stuff after you start eating healthy
dana
Replythe whole stomach feeling tighter is a good thing, that means that youre muscles are working and building. After a while on one difficulty you wont feel it as much until you go to the next difficulty. and it probably means that you are keeping your stomach muscles tight while you play which is giving them a workout too, that is a really good thing.Keep it up and you will see more obvious results. Good luck.
Which GAme is the best...
ReplyIf you play 3-4 hrs. a day how much will u loose...?
Steve.. thanks alot guys... this christmachankwanzika im getting 1 :>
