Dance Dance Revolution Weight Loss

GetUpMove.com: "This is Tanya Jessen's story of how she lost 95lbs, not through conventional diet and exercise but by playing the video game, Dance Dance Revolution (DDR). Tanya started playing DDR 4 years ago when she was 17 and enjoyed it so much that it became a regular activity. Through sharing her weight loss story, Tanya hopes to tell people that losing weight can be easy and fun by choosing an activity that fits in with your lifestyle. Tanya is working with RedOctane to educate Americans about a fun new way to lose weight while using an Ignition(tm) Dance Pad."

I have really been playing DDR since about christmas.I have a Japanese and american ps2 and have all 6 versions (3 each) plus a competition dance mat(metal). I have lost 25 lbs since jan 3rd and just got my first AAA. What a Difference. DDR is the answer to American obesity, even if it did come from Japan.

I haven't gotten my ddr yet.But I will be getting it in about a week or so. I would like to know if anybody knows how long it would take (approx..) to lose 20lbs if I play for an hour aday... Please.. I really need to know...

Jo: If you look it up, it seems your body stores about 3500 calories per pound of body fat. For 20 lbs, that's 70,000 calories. I've read that playing DDR non-stop can burn about 640 calories in an hour. At an hour a day, every day, that would add up to 70,000 calories burned in about three and a half months.

The thing about it is, by excercising, you're going to increase your base metabolism, which means you'll burn calories at an increased rate even while not actively playing DDR. If you watch what you eat (i.e. don't go on an I-just-excercised binge too often), I'd guess that three months could permanently rid you of 20 lbs, but as always, real medical advice comes from medical professionals, not anonymous people on the net. (They might tell you that it may take less; I wouldn't know.)

I just started playing DDR at the beginning of this month and I play for about 3-3.5 hours a day. I've just now stopped getting joint pains but well x.x; I'm a beginner. Does anyone know if I'll lose weight playing beginner or do I have to wait until I can pull off the harder levels to start losing?

KosmicKittyKyo-

I just started playing DDR and started on beginner. Slowly you'll make it to light and then to standard. It took 7 days of light mode just to lose 2 pounds (But I played for about 4 hours each day). You'll be burning fat, don't worry about it. Its just easyer on harder levels because you're moving around more. Oh, and here's a secret to getting good at DDR quickly- Don't bring your feet back to the middle. Where ever you place your foot last (I.e the right arrow) keep it there and wait for the next arrow to come. As you want to get better and faster at the game, you will notice bring your feet back to the middle will be impossible. So don't go back to the middle! Oh yeah- I've lost 4 pounds in the past 2 weeks since I started- I'm a standard/heavy mode player now too (from playing so much).

I've lost about 10 lbs from playing since February, playing on Game mode I use light mode and for workout mode I am on Standard/Heavy since you cant fail, just keep moving, it counts every step you make, even if it's the wrong one

Cutting calories is also a good idea even while DDRing, Times your ideal weight by 15 if you are fairly active or 20 if you're very active then subtract 500-1000 calories and that is how much you should allow yourself to get to and stay at that weight

Interesting Idea! I've watchedd the kids (10 & 14yrs) play this and there's no doubt that it does what you must do to loose weight--constant movement of you're large muscle groups.
?I'm concerned about the constant impact inherent to the game, so I'm wondering if anyone has checked this with a bones and joints Dr. or a foot Dr.? If not, perhaps a sports medicine or even a GP? Any articles out there?
I'd be very interested in feedback on impact considerations, because I love dancing, and I'm a tennnis-player, so this would also help my footwork and lateral stability on the court!

Hi! My 7 year old just started DDR Extreme. He is participating in a study through my insurance company and a State College Medical Center. They gave us a console, dance pad and game. They took lots of measurements and did a great deal of testing concerning cardiovascular and respiratory. He will go back in 3 months for a check in and this is a 6 month study. It is very involved and there is a great deal of record keeping. Anyway, the pad that they provided- through the Health/Sciences and Sports medicine department- is a very nice cushioned pad which, it is my understanding is safer as far as the impact on the joints. I believe they said the pad is about $109.00. I am curious about somehting though. He has been playing for about 5 days and has gaine 1.5 pounds. Has anyone found that to be typical intially? Also, has anyone else particpated in this type of study?

dont freak out about that 1.5 pounds, its most likly muscle, just think about how much the game effects your leg muscles... i also have a question, if you can burn about 500 calories in 30 min, and watch what you eat, but arnt losing much weight, what would you say i should do differently?? or should i just stick with it?

Reply

it's probably water weight. Most peoples weight fluctuates from the amount of water in their system. Depending on what time you weighed him it could vary quite a bit (my own weight flucuates as much as 5 pounds up or down). You should probably take several weighings over the course of a few days and see what that tells you. It probably is not muscle, muscle takes a consideral amount of time to grow and 1.5 pounds in 5 days would be nearly impossible.

concerning your problem with not losing weight moon, you have probly hit a platou(sp?). At this point your muscles are getting used to the work their doing and you will need to increase the intensity of your workout. Now might be a good time to try and move up a difficulty. Also, an important factor in weight loss is building muscle. Muscle increases your metabolism, and will also make you healthier, more attractive, and all sorts of other things. If you were playing DDR primarily as a means of weight loss, you defanitly need to consider adding some weight training to your plans.

don't give up if you are not losing weight it takes a long time. One pound of fat equals 3500 hundred calories, so even if you are burning as much as 500 every day, it will still take a week. The important part is to stick with it. I have lost a few pounds and have changed my eating habits and am doing workouts with weights too. You have to be optamistic about it.

I have lost over 35lbs in a course of 4 and a half months, going from 190 to 155. One thing i highly suggest to those of you that are doing this to lose weight... DONT THINK ABOUT IT as a means to lose weight, actually enjoy the game for the game, many of those success stories you hear are from people that played the game out of enjoyment, a majority of them were surprised with the results. Pay too much attention to the amount of calories your burning and how long you've been playing will turn this into 'another exercise' which is really what many of you are trying to get away from. Please everyone enjoy the game and dont concentrate on the calories and the time played, the weight will melt off. i promise!

I've been playing DDR for a while now: it really is a great way to make exercise fun. It is always so exciting to 'A' a song for the first time, or move a difficulty level up on a certain song.

Here's my random input: are any of you familiar with Pilates? One of the key ideas in Pilates is to keep your 'core' (muscles around your center, such as the abdominals) activated.

How does this connect? Well, if you're looking to tone your midsection as well as your legs, it can really help to try and keep your stomach muscles taut/flexed as you play. I notice a significant difference when I just dance, and when I dance with attention paid to my abs.

In the end, helps for a leaner look, and fuller workout.

Hi, I've been playing DDR for 5 days and am now playing on Standard mode regularly. I can AA 3-4 standard mode songs but was wondering if anyone has any tips for heavy. I can only do 2 heavy songs, Butterfly and a 4 footer. Can anyone tell me if i'm doing good for 5 days of playing or give me some pointers? Thanks!

around 2001-2002 i only weighed in at about 130-140. plus i was lifting weights a lot so i was kinda buff.

now all i do everyday is play computer games and i weight 170-180. its not very noticable even though my stomach hangs out if i have no shirt on. but the part i really hate is my face got fatter (lol)... its almost starting to look like i have a double chin. which i really dont want...

if i wanted to lose abou 20 pounds in less than a month. how much ddr would i have to play a day? and how much calories should i be eating?

Hi, do you guys think it would be just as effective to lose weight if i am not overweight, but slightly in the higher ranges of healthy weight? i would actually like to drop 15 lbs in 1 month,i am willing to eat less, healthier, i just need to see results to be motivated, but hearing everyone's stories, i am already encouraged. thanks!

Allright, I'm going to try to play DDR to lose weight. I have always been slim up until 3 years ago. My good friend died and I started eating out of depression. I went from 6'1, 160 lbs in 2002 to 6'1, 240 lbs today. In a span of 36 months, I gained 80 lbs, which is 50% of my weight, and quite horrible. I still care about and will always remember my friend, but I want to be back to my old self and old health again. I'm starting a diet of yogurt, juices, and high-protein foods along with DDR every couple days or so. I'll keep you all updated on my progess through this webpage. I picked up DDR Extreme for PS2 today. Current weight is: 240

I have been overfat for about five years now. I have a thyroid condition which slows my metabolism drastically. I heard about losing weight playing DDR. I am going to start to play DDR for a couple of hours a day, five days a week, and see how much i can lose. I've lost a few pounds on dieting alone, but I am determined to not be the fat kid of my "group" anymore. I will be back soon with my results.

Today I stared my diet cutting calories and playing DDR for an hour. My weight is 140 lbrs, lets see if I really can loose 20 pounds!

For those of you wanting to lose 15-20lbs in a month, that's NOT going to happen. And if it does, it's not just fat, it's also water weight and lean body mass(muscle). Safely, you should be losing around 2-3 lbs of fat per week. You will see results if you exercise and eat right. Nutrition is a big part of it.

Shut up, Austin, and let us do our own thing.

Austin's right, be nice now, Chori. I'm overweight and I'd love to lose 15-20 lbs in a month, but that's not very realistic. About 10 is more likely.

All right. I'm down to 226 after a month (from 240, above). Just an update for you all. Probably would have lost more, but got 2 traffic tickets the other day and broke up with my girlfriend over the weekend, so I wasn't in the mood to dance for a couple days.

Well done Adam! Keep it up!

I bought the British version of DDR called Dancing Stage: Euromix and when I first bought it I was excited and I vowed to go on it everyday (so as to not waste my money). However, I found this hard as the game's songs were.... horrible. It was like the eurovision contest fallouts. I weigh 160 and am trying to get down to 120-140 and I find this impossible, I've tried quite a lot of things but nothing seems to be happening help!

Hey Natt,
I'm the same weight as you and also want to get down to 120-140. I think you should resort to other exercises or if you really like the dance mat get a new game or stick with one song on the Dancing Stage! I have been playing for a month now and am trying to see any changes... I'll keep you guys noted.

I have been playing DDR for awhile now almost 4 years. Iam playing all heavy songs and some on Challenging mode (DDR MAX2). The only thing I can say as far as tips is just keep practicing. There is no tips or cheats to being good at this game. Tho I seemed to be laughed at alot because im still overweight but my doctor says he wouldn't expect a 14 year old to lose weight but i really badly want to lose weight because i am always being made fun of in High School and life just doesn't seem to like me that much. It's hard when no one wants to support you and only bring you down in your school. I'll keep you all posted on how my life is going.

I agree with what someone else said -
"Dont think about it" If you seriously want to lose some serious weight then just keep going!!!

After months of sitting at the computer and eating crisps and takeaways i said to myself enough is enough!!! i wanna fit in "those jeans" again!!

I started on my daughters dance mat and found that i really got hooked quickly, i now use it daily
"sometimes every other day"
for at least an hour and over a period of one month have lost 19 pounds 8-)

But the thing ive noticed more is not how much weight ive lost but how different my body looks, my legs look leaner and longer and i can actually see my stomache muscles appearing again!!

I use Standard mode but usually just do the fast techno songs i can't stand slow songs its too frustrating!!

Stick with it people if i can do it you can!!!!!
xx Kels xx
