Grapefruit Diet: Fact, Not Fiction
Scripps Clinic Research Verifies Link Between Grapefruit and Weight Loss
Yahoo Financial News: The 12-week pilot study, led by Dr. Ken Fujioka, monitored weight and metabolic factors, such as insulin secretion, of the 100 men and women who participated in the Scripps Clinic "Grapefruit Diet" study. On average, participants who ate half a grapefruit with each meal lost 3.6 pounds, while those who drank a serving of grapefruit juice three times a day lost 3.3 pounds. However, many patients in the study lost more than 10 pounds.

Hi,
I am in grapefruit diet now.but I accidently eat something that made by flour(a small amount) and a little bit of corn,it will affect the result, can I continue the diet 2 more days to solve this.
Anyone can share with me?
ReplyThanks.
Regards,
Kathy
it was just a little, then u can continue the diet but try to not do that anymore... I say that it is ok from my own personal experience of eating a couple of things that were not on the diet but it was only a little... but then again I do exercise also the whole point of the diet is to create a calorie deficit...
ReplySomeone help me,
ReplyI have read a grapefruit diet plan which says no tomatoes, no lettuce, no cucumber, no carrots....
What is in a salad then ???
Someone help me please I'm confused
you may have lettuce and tomatoes... but no carrots... salad can consist of lettuce, meat, green peppers, cucumbers, spinach, and any type of dressing excluding low fat or fat free...
Replyi want to start the diet on monday 10/27/08 but i would like to know if i can have cheese. looking on the websites some say cheese and some say no cheese.
Replyhi there,
Replyi would really like to try this diet, but have 2 questions...
1) i am vegetarian & need to know what my meat substitute options are?
2) is it true that this diet can lead to a higher risk of breast cancer?
thankyou :)
You Can Eat Lettuce, Tomatoes & Cucumbers! That Is What A Salad Mainly Consists Of! As For The Cheese, Only Cottage Cheese Is Allowed! But I Would Not Advise It! And Lastly, This Is A Vegetables, And MEAT Diet! I Don't Think This Diet Is Very Suitable For Vegetarians! Because You Have To Eat Bacon, Eggs, And Lots Of Meat! The Combination Of Foods Actually Burn Fat! I Don't Think There Are Any Substitutes For The Meat In This Diet! Try Google & Look For A Vegatarian Diet, Maybe You'll Find One! Good Luck Everybody!!!
ReplyI first tried the grapefruit diet back in Summer of 2000. I stayed on it for about 2 1/2 months and went from a size 14 to a size 6/8! That was a total of about 50lbs! Now I must tell you all that I have been on every diet there is! You must incorporate exercise into your lifestyle in order to keep the weight off. I had started to also incorporate the grapefruit/ no-carb diet plan into my lifestyle altogether and managed to keep the weight off. I didn't have to workout 5-6 days per week to keep the weight off either! All you have to do is practice self control. I'm so tired of hearing people say, "when i came off this diet and that diet, i gained double". Of course you're going to gain double if you go straight back to the same lifestyle of bad habits! That's like a drug/alcohol user staying sober for one year then going back on a binge! After a while your body will not crave the sweets and bad carbs. If I did choose to have sweet potatoes or a piece of cake, I would flush it out with water and make sure I worked it off. That's all you have to do. The grapefruit diet works! It has worked for each and every person I've known to go on it. For those of you who say it doesn't? Stop cheating and it will! You will lose about 50 lbs or more in a 2 1/2 month period! Cut out the starchy vege's, sodas and fruit juices! No bread and no sugar! Drink plenty of water and you will see a difference! I promise!
ReplyI also meant to add the things you should and should not eat on this diet plan. There are a few diets on the websites that do not give the correct meal plan for the grapefruit diet. Some folk even complain about headaches and you only get those by not drinking enough water to flush out the acid in the grapefruit juice. You can also have 1/2 of a grapefruit instead of juice. I like to mix it up to give myself some variety. Well, for those of you that are serious? Here it goes!
The Grapefruit Diet
This diet is given to heart patients who need to quickly loose weight for bypass surgery.
In 2 months you should loose 52 pounds with this diet, 12 days on diet, 2 days off diet;
depending on your weight.
Breakfast
Grapefruit or 4 oz. Unsweetened Grapefruit Juice
2 Lg. Eggs, Any style
2 Slices of Bacon, cooked medium
Lunch
Grapefruit or 4 oz. Unsweetened Grapefruit Juice
Salad, any type of dressing, any size
Meat, any type, any amount
Dinner
Grapefruit or 4 oz. Unsweetened Grapefruit Juice
Meat, any type, any amount
Vegetable, any red or green vegetable, cooked with any seasonings (or a salad)
Coffee or Tea, 1 cup
Snack
Glass of Tomato Juice or Skim Milk with sweetener
Instructions
1. At any meal, you can eat until you are full or cannot eat any more.
2. Don't eliminate anything from the diet. Especially don't skip the bacon or omit the salads. It is the combination of these foods that make the diet work.
3. The grapefruit is important because it acts as a catalyst that starts the burning process.
4. Cut down on all caffeine consumption, it affects the insulin balance that helps the fat burning process (1 cup daily).
5. Do not eat in between meals. If you eat the combination of foods above you will not get hungry.
6. Do not eat desserts, breads, white vegetables or sweet potatoes. You may choose to double or triple your helping of meat, salad, and vegetables. Eat until you are full.
The more you eat the proper combination of foods, the more you will loose.
7. You can loose 18 pounds in 18 days with this diet. There will be no loss for the first 4 days. You should loose 5 pounds on the 5th day. After that you should loose 1 pounds every 2 days until you are at your desired weight.
8. Drink as much water as you like.
9. All soft drinks need to be diet and caffeine free.
10. You may not have white onions, potatoes or celery.
11. You may have red onions, bell peppers, radishes, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach, lettuces, cabbage,
carrots and tomatoes.
Replycan you eat cheese?? the version i have sais any kind of cheese... and i read in another that it is only cottage cheese..can you clear this up for me because i am eating a small amount of parmazan cheese on my salad ..and i dont want this to fool up my diet!!
ReplyI was wondering if i can still eat what i want and still lose the weight? Do i have to eat bacon?
Replyhey... i was wondering what you substituted for bacon on the diet? can u substitute some cheese instead of the bacon in the morning?
Replyare you guys sure this will work....im willing to work out an hour a day...staright cardio...but i need to know for sure this will work...i way 250 and in about 2 months i want to way 200..and of course after the 2 months maintain a healthly lifestyle of eating...any encouragement.guys
ReplyIt says in the diet "any type of dressing" but that doesn't make sense. So, why does it say ANY TYPE if we are to watch out for carbs? Also, I wish someone would please finally answer the question about what they ate on the 2-day hiatus from the diet.
ReplyToday is Friday, Jan.9, 2009. I started the Grapefruit diet on Monday, 4 days ago, I have lost an amazing 5 pounds already. It is easy to follow and does not get in the way of others in the household.
ReplyI guess this diet is not for all, but it's certainly is for me! At least, so far. I have lost 7 pounds in a week. I am doing it in my own way, which is five days on, two days off. I eat as horribly as I always did on the weekend, then go back to the GF diet during the week. It makes sense for me and I won't cheat, knowing that during my relaxing time on the weekends I can eat whatever. I check my weight each morning. I luckily did not gain any weight this weekend, although I was anticipating a pound or so. Anyway, I'm back to the diet this morning. Oh, and I've cut out sodas completely (even on weekends). My goal is 125. I started out at 157. Only 25 more to go! PS People say it's unhealthy, but what I was eating before was worse. So, whatever!
ReplyOh, and exercise. Last week, I did 30-40 minutes four days out of the week. This week, I'm going to go for 40-50 minutes. I've been dancing, doing sit ups, and old buns of steel exercises...ie knee bends and leg lifts. I'll probably add weights to the same exercises next week.
ReplyIm on this grapefruit diet and im on my 3rd day now..can somebody tell me is it ok even if i took my breakfast late? i mean 9 am lunch 2 pm then dinner at 9 pm again? is it necesarry to drink the skimmed milk every night?..I feel like im becoming more heavy and not losing any weight?..hehehehehe
Replywell i've been on the grapefruit diet for five days and have lost 7 pounds so far!
ReplyI just went from 168 to 163 pounds in 4 days of the diet. I don't like veggies, therefore I limit them. And I have a question, if any of you lost your 40 or 30 pound goal, does you skin tend to hang? Im quite young and I dont want that.
ReplyI am starting tomorrow January 26, 2009. I am ecstatic to take this weight off. I know it is important not to go crazy on the 2 day off so if anyone can tell me what they ate on those days it would be greatly appreciated. Also what type of dressings are you all using? I'll be back with an update.

I don't get the all you can eat concept? Why then do they say 2 eggs or 2 slices of Bacon why not just say eggs and Bacon?
ReplyI started the GF diet on 2/23/09, this is my fourth day, I haven't seen any weightloss yet but I'm determined to stick with it. I'm 5'2 and started at 160 pounds. I'll keep you posted.
ReplyStarted the GF diet 2 days ago, going well (1 pound already) My question is for the success story dieters. Did anyone use the Ruby Red GF juice and have the same results? It actually has less sugar and tastes so munch better.
Thanks !!!
ReplyI have been on this diet for 5 days and i've already lost 5 pounds! This is the first time i've tried this diet and i am in love with it.
ReplyI've been on the grapefruit diet for 10 days now and I have lost weight but I'm feeling very weak and hungry I do eat until I'm full and follow to a T any suggestions of something that I'm doing wrong?
ReplyI hosetly dont think it matters what you eat - just cut out bread - and have at least one whole fresh gratefruit a day - it will work - the emzeme in the fruit will make you loose wait ....
I think the strict diet is based on a fad - its the gratefruit that does the job - just eat anything plus your gratefruit - but eat less than before ..
It works ..
ReplyI've read ALL of the comments and would like to thank everyone for sharing their stories. I am at my 1st duty station and gained A TON of wegiht. So, I am trying this. Today. No snacks. No cheating. I try to keep myself motivated. I want to lose about 15 lbs. Hopefully this goes well. Thanks again guys for sharing.. By the way... I do eat turkey bacon and plenty of salad. No tomato juice of skim milk for me.. Gross

Replyi have huge appetite. i sometimes buy grapefruit juice to drink because i can attest that it works quickly, to maintain my weight.
Cheese works when I work out. I don't know why.
Though I wonder what are the dangers for drinking too much grapefruit juice?
Replyhi there everyone,
Replyim just wondering, when the meat is cooked, is it a requiremtn that it is cooked in a healthy manner? for example, no oil to be used... im asking because i read that butter may be used sparingly but others say you cannot fry the egg... and also, how do i cook the bacon? fry it or eat it raw??
isnt it the high fat content that makes the grapefruit work to burn the fat??... any advice would be much appreciated, thanks

Ok, so my friend Shawn actually told me about this diet, he lost a lot of weight on it and it only took him a month. But it's not the traditional grapefruit diet. The way he did it, he said he just ate a big breakfast with half a grapefruit, a salad for lunch, and a bowl of cereal for dinner. I've been doing this diet, but I eat half a grapefruit with both breakfast and lunch, and then drink a glass of grapefruit juice after my dinner. I also work out almost every day, but it only takes me 25 minutes, as long as I do at LEAST 1 mile on the elliptical machine. I also added pickles, because they only have like 5 calories, and I added green tea because that's really supposed to help your metabolism. I've been on the diet for 9 days and I've lost 6 pounds...although I'm not sure if that weight is accurate because it's "that time of the month" for me right now and most women can gain between 5-7 pounds from water retention during this time. On my 2 days off I plan to go crazy, especially since the first day off is my birthday, but so far I'm pleased with the diet...I just really miss chocolate lol. And I HATE salad, but I make myself choke it down anyway. I'm hoping to lose 40-50 pounds overall. My starting weight was 184 and I'm now down to 178, so I'm pretty happy so far. I know most people lose more, but I'm kinda doing my own version, and I'm pretty confident it will work. Maybe once I'm done with "my time of the month" I'll drop another 5 pounds. We'll see.
ReplyHi, everyone! I started the GF diet 4 days ago and have lost 8lbs!!! I'm so excited and motivated to keep going as I have a lot more to lose! I haven't been drinking all of my water so that is something I really have to get better at and I have seen this question asked many times but have yet to see an answer....What do you eat on the 2 days off? Do you eat carbs or modify them? Please help, I don't want to screw it all up on those two days!
ReplyThanks, everyone!
I am on day 6 of the G/F diet and I have lost almost 6 pounds might I add that I got my period last night and I am very bloated...I do believe this works but this is just the 1st week I always lose alot the 1st week of any diet I am staying on it for 3 months will the 12 days on 2 days off I hope I lose more
