Low Carb Diet Turns Muscle into Fat
Today's Boston Globe describes something unsettling about low carb diets:
Unless you work out, your body composition changes when you're on a high-protein, high-fat, and low-carbohydrate diet. Your body converts muscle to fat, according to Dr. Katz. And when you go off the diet and start to eat, the pounds come back as fat, not muscle. In addition to being unsightly -- you probably went on a diet expecting to look fabulous fast -- having less muscle makes it more difficult to lose weight and keep it off. Muscle has a higher metabolic rate. The more muscle you have, the more calories you can consume without gaining weight.

What studies confirm this astounding statement? I've been on a low carb diet and feel great. I don't seem to be turning muscle to fat. I feel fit and more energetic and have almost no problem with heartburn while following low carb diets.
ReplyDr. Katz is flat wrong. Fat is fat, muscle is muscle, there is no in between tissue. "Dr." Katz must be a nickname.
ReplyLike ba says, gaining muscle and fat are two very different processes and being on a low-carb high protein diet does not have an inverse relationship on the two.
ReplyThat guy is a farse - don’t know where he got his "dr" muscle cannot turn into fat!!! To different kinds of tissues - that’s like comparing apples to oranges!!! check this website!!
