CNN on the South Beach Diet
CNN reviews the South Beach diet:
Called the South Beach Diet, the plan is poised to overtake the Atkins method as the newest weight-loss rage. The diet bears the name of the famous, high-life beach in Miami, Florida, conjuring up images of glamorous people in sexy bathing suits. The book, "The South Beach Diet" by Dr. Arthur Agatston, has been a best seller for months and has moved ahead of "Atkins for Life" to top The New York Times list for hardback advice books.
According to the diet's inventor, a food's calories alone aren't responsible for weight gain.
"It's really the reactive hypoglycemia that causes people to be hungry," said Agatston, a Miami cardiologist.
Eating foods rich in carbohydrates leads to hunger, and the result is bingeing on carbs, according to Agatston.
Refined carbs are rated so high on the glycemic index scale that white bread has a higher, i.e. worse, score than chocolate. Fat-free milk rates worse than whole milk with all the fat left in.
I just finished Phase 1 and lost 4 pounds which was not terrible but I was expecting more. I also excercize 6 times a week. To all who are discouraged I can only say, this diet is a great way to eat for a lifetime and I am sure that even if it takes a little longer, the weight will come off.
Replymy mom lost 65 pounds on the south beach diet 6 years ago and has kept it off!
ReplyI'm yet another one who is 5'2 and hasn't lost much weight in phase 1. I started at 144.5lbs and have been in phase 1 for 8 days, with no cheating, and working out (I do the P90X workouts - which are amazing btw), and am only at 143 now. I know I am replacing fat with muscle by working out, but really thought the added cardio workouts would burn more fat once I built up the insilin resistance in Phase 1. It's very frustrating, but one thing that I suggest for everyone is to take your measurements! Go to the grocery store, buy the measurment tape that tailors use, which should be by the sewing stuff, and keep a journal of your measurements. I do the following measurements once a week - waist (at the belly button), chest (around the back and fullest part of the breast), belly (around that hard to get rid of tummy about 3 inches below the belly button), thigh (at the meatiest part), arm (at the meatiest part).
I have noticed my measurements changing for the better even though my weight has not moved much. Keep in mind that the scale is not the only indicator of progress and the scale can be a very big demotivator which may cause you to quit too soon!
ReplyHi Ya,
Ok so I went on south diet about 5 years ago after I had my daughter. During Phase 1 which I stretched out for 3 weeks I barely lost any weight. I was lucky if I lost 3 lbs. However when I started Phase 2 I dropped weight like a fly. I went from 140 to 105 I find that bring back the fiber and carbs in your diet helps your body burn them faster. BC your body is REJECTING THE CARBSSS. Anyhow. 5 years later I put on 15lbs and so Im back on it. From time to time I will Crash the Carbs and not eat them however I have not had much success losing weight. Phase 1 is Temporary so never drag it out. It is a way to help control cravings and reprogram your body. And yeah I'm 5"1' : 0 ) Lets hope I lose the 15 LBS soon so I can look good on the beach again.
ReplyI started SBD on Feb. 19th and this is my third week I have lost only 2 lbs. I am still on Phase 1. I did cheat little bit. Once I had a whole wheat pita and ate oranges few times a week and had brown rice once. However, while I was at phase one I counted the calories I ate and made sure that I don't consume more than 1200 per day. I am 48 years old and 5' tall and weighs 128. I would like to loose 18 lbs. I also started excersing regularly. Should start alover again and without cheating this time?
ReplyMiva, please excuse my comment. A large study just came out that showed that calories in versus calories used is all that matters, regardless of "diet." There is no way, in my experience, that a pita bread, oranges , or some rice will destroy any diet. If you are not losing weight, it's too many calories in most likely. I hope you, and other dieters are willing to see the value of this information.
ReplyI am demoralized. I'm a 50 year old male, 5'8" x 241. I've always carries weight well and look "slim" at 200 pounds. I started the SP weeks ago today and have lost a measly 7 pounds. I can't think of what I'm doing wrong as everyone I know who've done this plan before had lost 10-15 pounds at this point. Is there anything that I may be not doing correctly that IS NOT outlined in the diet. I could have done ole' trusty Weight Watchers and achieved the same result but enjoyed fruits, yogurts, and some of the veggies that are banned in Phase 1 of SB. I will say one thing however; my hunger is greatly diminished and my portions have really shrunk - I'm simply not as hungry as I would be on WW. At this rate of loss I'll probably have a total loss of 8 or 9 pounds in 4 weeks. Please offer me any suggestions........
ReplyI have just completed the first week of the South Beach Diet. My goal was to loose 10 pounds and I actually lost 10 by day six (yesterday)! I did not cheat AT ALL and have always exercised daily. I find that I no longer crave any carbs or any of the other junk I used to eat. My question is: Now what? Do I continue with the second week of stage one even though I've made my goal? Or do I go straight to the maintenance stage? I have no problems going on to the second week of stage one, I just don't want to loose any more weight. But I'm afraid if I skip it, I'll somehow digress... Anyone know?
