This intriguing story has filled the news wires. To quote from the lead author of the study: "the findings don't show diet sodas are a cause of increased heart disease risks".

However, there is a very curious link between the two...

Elton John, Victoria Beckham and even former president Bill Clinton are a few of the famous people admitting to being hooked on Diet Coke.

I use to be too and I'm sure many people drink Coke from time to time, but Amanda Sanchez is a real Diet Coke addict that drinks more than 12 cans a day.

The reason people don't like diet soda - is not so much the taste, but rather the "mouth-feel".

Researchers have discovered that people can accurately discern the difference between beverages made with sugar and those without - all based around the texture. Drinks tested included Pepsi, Diet Pepsi, Pepsi Edge, Coke, Diet Coke, C2, and many more.

Both Coca-Cola and PepsiCo will soon release vitamin-fortified soft drinks - Diet Coke Plus and Tava.

Diet Coke Plus is scheduled to come out this spring, while PepsiCo's Tava will be available in the fall.

Coca-cola CEO Neville Isdell wants to "get the target off our [coca-cola's] backs". The target he is talking about is the association between obesity and sugary beverages. He feels Coca-cola is unfairly targeted.

Get ready to watch how an enormous company will throw millions of dollars into marketing spin. The goal is to make you think that all their drinks are "healthy".

Enviga ("the calorie burner") will be on shelves all over the US by January. Backed by the marketing muscle of Coca-cola and Nestle - expect this drink to be heavily advertised.

Enviga is being touted as a "negative calorie" drink - it contains no calories and yet claims to burn calories.

Is there any evidence for this?

Along with the phenomenal growth of diet sodas (and all their variants), there is a new kind of diet drink emerging. These new drinks claim they will actually aid in weight loss. Claims range from appetite suppression, to boosting metabolism, and even burning calories.

Hot on the heels of Diet Coke With Splenda comes Coca-Cola Zero. Coke Zero is sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium (ace-k) and has zero calories. The only chemical difference between Coke Zero and Diet Coke is that Coke Zero has about half the aspartame but has more ace-k.

Confused anyone? It's a marketing thing - Coke have manufactured a "diet" coke without using the word diet... which in their eyes will appeal to a different demographic.

Another Diet Coke has just been introduced - "Diet Coke sweetened with SPLENDA Brand Sweetener". There are now seven different flavors of Diet Coke. They are: Diet CokeCaffeine Free Diet CokeDiet Coke with LimeDiet Coke with LemonDiet Cherry CokeDiet Vanilla CokeDiet Coke with Splenda
